When the fantasy TV drama Journey of Flower <花千骨> aired in 2015, it became an instant hit, pushing Zanilia Zhao (赵丽颖) as the nation’s number one TV actress. It kickstarted the xianxia wave of TV series in China, and for the next few years, these fantasy wuxia series became a staple of Chinese evening television.
Journey of Flower tells the story of Hua Qiangu, the last descendant of the mother goddess Nüwa. Hua Qiangu falls in love with the immortal Bai Zihua, but she is fated to be his downfall. Journey of Flower became the representative work of both Zanilia and Wallace Huo (霍建華), putting them as one of China’s highest-paid TV actors.
With the events of Journey of Flower still fresh in everyone’s minds, producers are racing for the opportunity to bring it back to the public in the form of a film version, but the new movie won’t be starring Zanilia anymore—it’ll feature a new actress, Yang Chaoyue (杨超越).
Yang Chaoyue debuted in 2017 as a member of the short-lived girl group CH2. In 2018, she auditioned for the Chinese season of Produce 101 <创造101> and won third place, later re-debuting in the girl group Rocket Girls 101 (火箭少女101). She has since starred in five television drama series since her Rocket Girls debut.
While news of a rebooted Journey of Flower is exciting to some fans, history has shown that film remakes of Chinese television dramas has never exactly fared well in the box office. You Are My Sunshine <何以笙箫默> starring Huang Xiaoming (黄晓明) and Yang Mi (杨幂)—film version to 2015’s hit series My Sunshine starring Wallace Chung (鍾漢良) and Tiffany Tang (唐嫣)—grossed an average 400 million yuan in the box office. Once Upon a Time <三生三世十里桃花> starring Crystal Liu (刘亦菲) and Yang Yang (杨洋), a film adaptation of the book that gave rise to 2017’s hit series Eternal Love, grossed only 500 million yuan despite breaking a trailer viewing record. The film was also critically panned.
