Kenneth Ma Transforms into Elderly Beggar for “The Misadventure Of Zoo”

Handsome bachelor Kenneth Ma (馬國明) has turned into a wrinkly old beggar in The Misadventure of Zoo <流氓皇帝>, a remake of the 1981 TVB classic starring veteran artiste Adam Cheng (鄭少秋) in the same role. Wearing a wig full of grey hairs while carrying a nylon canvas bag, Kenneth was completely unrecognizable to bystanders during on a location shoot on June 4.

Kenneth portrays lead character Chu Gum Chun, an average man who unexpectedly becomes an emperor but later loses everything and ends up poorer than ever before. The story spans several decades, covering the early Republic era and the devastating Sino-Japanese war. Although the plot focuses mainly on Chu’s own absurd adventures, the on-and-off relationship between Chu and his lover Yik Yung Yung (Niki Chow 周麗淇) is also a major selling point of the series.

With filming scheduled to end in mid-June, Kenneth is currently busy shooting the latter parts of the drama. He was seen dressed up as a raggedy old man walking around the set with a hunched back and a nylon bag. In this scene, pitiful Chu Gum Chun has become a beggar and was walking along the street writing graffiti on some random walls. He later tried to use a public restroom but carelessly entered through the women’s side, which resulted in angry housewives chasing him out with broomsticks in hand.

Filming outdoors during an 86-degree-Fahrenheit summer day, Kenneth was drenched with sweat from his heavy layers but remained professional as he ran up and down a slope several times to get the perfect shot. Well-prepared, he was seen sitting aside with his personal fan in between takes, doing his best to cool down under Hong Kong’s sweltering heat.

  1. Easily the best drama of tvb history. Look forward to it. Can,t wait like everyone else.

    1. You haven’t even watched it yet you make such a pompous claim, lmao!

      1. Lilly must have seen the future. I want some of that drug.

      2. It is a remake, she looked into the history…

Didnt you read the earlier report?

      3. Of cos I know it’s a remake. Still doesn’t mean that it’s going to be good. By the way, as a rule of thumb, remakes always suck.

      4. Much less ” easily the best drama of tvb history” lmao.

      5. Not necessarily because sometimes remakes can be good.

  2. My concern is the clothes that they are wearing in the series. Hopefullly it better be good as in the 30+ years ago.

  3. Kenneth Ma looked like Paul Chun Pui in the above photo. If I did not read the headline, I would have assumed that it was Paul Chun Pui.

    1. He looks like Anthony Wong to me in that picture. 🙂

    2. He looks like a combo of Paul and Anthony.

  4. wow kenneth ma looks weird and when i just saw that photo of kenneth ma i really freak out i was thinking that couldn’t be him in that photo!!!!!!!!!!!!~~~~~

    1. Interestingly enough, Kenneth’s “beggar look” here is horrid — makes him look like a werewolf! In comparisons, Adam Cheng’s “beggar look” in the same series from 30 years ago looks way more realistic and ‘human’. To be honest…at this point, I already dread seeing what the final product is going to look like…my gut feeling is that TVB is going to ruin yet another classic series with a lousy remake!

  5. How on earth does the title translate into something so weird funny and awful? At first i thought it was about an outing by a bunch of kids to the zoo and their misadventures there! Doesn’t make sense with the chinese title at all!

  6. Was the old series an ancient or modern series?

  7. If TVB remakes the Legend of the Condor Heroes I request for Kenneth as the Venom dude with that exact look.

      1. “West Venom” AuYeung Fung (歐陽鋒).

@Yuyu: LOL…now that you mention it, I definitely see the resemblance…especially the AuYeung Fung in ROTCH with his crazy disheveled look. Haha!

      2. Oh yea thanks llwy12, gosh, these English translations really throw me off. Like “white camel mountain” for example. At first, I was wondering what that meant until my friend told me.

  8. Very good transformation…the only giveaway was his eyes.
