Grace Chan Wins 2014 Miss Chinese International Pageant

After rounds of fierce competition, contestant #5 Grace Chan (陳凱琳) from Hong Kong successfully won the 2014 Miss Chinese International Pageant. First runner-up of the night was #16 Cindy Zhong (鍾熠) from Vancouver, Canada, while second runner-up was #9 Lucia Lorigiano (黃婷麗) from Montreal, Canada. The Miss Friendship award was earlier presented to #13 Mandi Cheung (張佩雯) from Singapore.

Grace was greeted with a cheering crowd as soon as she made her first appearance onstage. With many local supporters, her confidence instantly boosted. This year’s competition proved to be extremely intense, with contestants being eliminated at every stage so that only the best remained. Grace delivered a stunning flute performance during the talent show segment, which was received with loud applause.

During a question and answer segment of the show, Grace won points by stating beauty contestants should not only possess beauty and intelligence, but a loving heart as well. Having participated in many forms of charity work since winning the 2013 Miss Hong Kong title, she proved to be an example of an ideal contestant. Once Grace was announced as the final winner of the night, she immediately covered her face and burst into tears.

Grace is the first Hong Kong delegate to win the Miss Chinese International title since Sonija Kwok’s (郭羨妮) victory in 2000. Grace was very satisfied by her own performance and excited to win the crown.

Winners’ Backgrounds

The 22-year old returned to Hong Kong to join the competition upon graduating with a degree in Communications from Simon Fraser University in Canada. Since childhood, participating in a beauty pageant had been Grace’s dream. In her spare time, she likes to play the piano, cook, sing, and read. Grace is able to communicate fluently in English, Cantonese, and Mandarin. She is now a signed artist under TVB, and her goal is to inspire others with her work.

First runner-up of the night went to Vancouver’s representative, #16 Cindy Zhong. As a student in the Sauder School of Business at the University of British Columbia, the 23-year old aspires to become a successful businesswoman. Her hobbies include playing badminton, singing, and traveling around the world. Cindy speaks fluent English, Mandarin, and Shanghainese.

Delegate #9 Lucia Lorigiano from Montreal, Canada, came in as the second runner-up. Currently still a university student, the 20-year old hopes to become a doctor upon graduation. Lucia is able to communicate in English, French, Mandarin, and Italian. When there is time, she has a passion for sports including volleyball, soccer, and basketball. Lucia is also a talented photographer and guitar player.

During yesterday’s final rehearsal, the 16 pageants voted for the Miss Friendship award.  Singapore’s representative, #13 Mandi Cheung, was selected as this year’s Miss Friendship. During the thank you speech, Mandi expressed her gratitude towards the other candidates and reflected upon the memorable journey of the competition. The 19-year old is currently still completing her major in university, but aspires to be an actress in the future. Mandi is able to speak English, Cantonese, and Mandarin. Her hobbies include dancing, watching shows, and traveling the world.

  1. Congrats to GRACE CHAN that won successfuly
In the miss international pageant 2014 and the two girls are ok for this year’s event!!!!!!!!!!!!@_@

    1. There were a lot of pork chops from the rest of the constestants this year…….I mean a lot!

      1. Cannot believe the world class beauty, Miss Kuala Lumpur failed to even make the Top 5. This pageant is rigged. I hope this is blessing in disguise for Miss Kuala Lumpur and now looking forward her crowning either as Miss Universe or Miss World.

      2. No, Zhiny placed 4th/5th (not disclosed but she did place in top 5.

    2. What was a bit annoying also was that it seems that no matter where the contestants were from, they mainly spoke Mandarin with a few speaking English.

The mainland Chinese are immigrating to all parts of the world and are gonna take over eventually.

      1. To be expected? After all, the goal of the Chinese gov’t is to wipe out Cantonese completely.

      2. Or the traditional way of writing Chinese characters will also be lost because Chinese gov’t promotes simplified..

I personally grew up writing traditional Chinese words, not simplified..

      3. IKR the mainland people spreading all over very quickly cause there rich now. And the more powerful part of china is mainland and richer.

    1. HAHAHAH so true…we will expect to see her soon in a tvb drama….

      1. She’s already set to take part in “Business Battle”

      2. I hope the drama comes out sooner. I think it’s called Trade War staring Wayne,Ron, Edwin and Grace and sisley.

      3. I am also interested in watching that drama and Midas! 😀

  2. I am so so happy when grace chan won
Again when I saw it on youtube video clip
When the people announce the winner I saw that grace was so happy that she would win again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Love GRACE CHAN SO MUCH I MEAN AS A PERSON

    1. Although what do you know about her as a person through your tv screen?

    2. I already knew she was going to win. She just so beautiful and talks really nice like how a lady should. And the other girls mostly looked like pork chops. No way Grace was going lose.

    3. ALL ABOUT HER IS IS TALENTED AND NOT TOO SHY TO SPEAK UP ALSO HAS A GOOOOOOOODDDD
SMILE THAT EVERYONE WOULD ALWAYS REMEMBER HER WHEN THEY SEE ON TV

  3. I think Grace is pretty and deserves to win but I don’t like she tries to push up her top to have cleavage. if you compare her with other girls with figure they all didnt have to purposely boost their cleavage… it was just natural. it is obvious in the part where they were wearing aerobics outfit in Q&A. overall i think she does deserve to win for being so calm, cool, and collected. i like montreal’s personality the best.

    1. I actually liked Montreal. Her answers were pretty terrible though

  4. Yeah GRACE CHAN she is so awsome
And she is the prettiest in all the other girls in
This year’s event I knew she will win again!!!!!!!!!!@_@
    Okay; )

  5. Congratulations to all three winners, well-deserved wins!
In a way, all of them are Canadian winners (:

I personally didn’t think Zhiny would win, but I did expected her to place in top 5/10., Zhiny’s talent performance was okay, but the talent performances that captured my attention were the singing ones, especially Grace’s! I also felt that Grace was the most 淡定, 夠自然 and the one that shined the most. I am also surprised by Cindy’s answer (she responded in Cantonese, sounded like she was a native speaker for one of her segments). I also liked Montreal and Lydia from the start.

    1. or maybe it was her introduction that she spoke full Cantonese (:

  6. It was obvious she was going to win because she was the most well spoken of all the contestants. I’m more suprised that #9 made it all the way to 2nd runner up. I kept waiting for her to get eliminated, especially after her terrible singing.

    1. Perhaps they thought her ‘cha cha cha’ was ‘cute’ lol…. i was wondering what language she was talking in for most of the event… I almost willed her to just speak French or English instead of that terrible semi-mandarin!! But being multilingual as a Dr. is important….

    2. it’s funny txb went ahead with her singing performance, someone should have told #9 that her singing wasn’t good, she should have danced instead

  7. Me too hope to see grace chan to be in tvb dramas
Yeah!!!!!!!!! Yeah she is quite good spoken in the event
    Of miss international pageant 2014

  8. i still think the contest is wigged somehow. in my opinion, there are more that are prettier than grace…wonder did TVB decided to give out the title so that she could sign a longer contract with them since they’re lacking first line actor/actress atm.
Also, if anyone watched the show yesterday, does anyone else think that it was rushed? i feel sorry for some of the contestants because the PD/FD went on the stage and told the eliminated contestant to get off the stage. so harsh.

    1. I agree that there are some contestants that are prettier than Grace. But out of all of them, the one who was the most 淡定, 夠自然 and had a relatively stable performance throughout the whole pageant was Grace. She also had the best answers in my opinion.

I personally don’t think that if Grace didn’t win it, Zhiny would not have placed first or second because her performance was just okay, nothing really stood out (although she is pretty). Plus, Zhiny was so close in getting eliminated too (unless TVB did that to create that anxious, “omg who will it be” feeling for the audience to generate a higher rating).

      1. Are you kidding me ????????????There were girls prettier than Grace no way. Maybe you mean better figure like bigger boobs and but. But not prettier.

      2. No, I am not talking about better figure.

Other than Grace, Zhiny, Cindy, Lydia, Mandi are some of the prettier contestants in this pageant, maybe not as pretty as Grace, but these contestants are preetier than some of the other contestants. Overall, Grace had the full package and the best smile as the beauty pageant winner.

    2. Watching it, I didn’t think it was rigged for Grace. It was obvious to me that she had the best answers and composure which is easier to judge than who is prettier. I actually think it would have benifited them if they had another winner so they can promote a Miss HK and Miss Int’l as a fadan.

    3. Uh…who is prettier than Grace in your eyes? Grace was the prettiest to me, followed by Sydney’s Phyllis Dai. Other ones were pretty average in my eyes.

    4. Don’t agree. Grace is the most beautiful and has the poise of a beauty queen. She would have been perfect if she was taller

      1. I completely agree. Grace would be the full package if she was just 2″ taller and a bit fuller in figure. But then again I know how hard it is for some people to gain weight especially if their bones are born small…:3 I think if is natural for her to be skinny like that.

  9. Grace is definitely rare elegant classic beauty in hong kong…she has the mixed exotic look (wonder is her parents have some mixed lineage) Grace half bro is also very handsome hot guy from the earlier pic shown yet he has not appear during both pageant events yet…Grace really have the “Miss” title winner expectation after Michelle Reis and Sonija Kwok…I expect her future boyfriend is someone thats also compatible in look as well

    1. I thought Grace only has a twin brother, not a half brother? And if you’ve seen any recent pics of her twin brother, you’ll see that he doesn’t look Chinese at all, but Indian/Middle Eastern/South American. Even Grace looks more Chinese than he does cause Grace still looks Chinese with mixed features. So I’m guessing that she does have some kind of non-Chinese blood..(though she says her parents are 100% Chinese).

      1. The mom definitely had an affair.. theres no way they look nothing like the parents. he is soo east indian.

      2. PICTURES PLEASE.

Also you never know. There might have been some mixed blood somewhere in the family line. My teacher was Korean but her grandmother looked so western because they had Russian blood in their family. It skipped everywhere else except for her cousin.

      3. Maybe somewhere along the ancestral lineage there was some mixed blood and it manifests itself in this generation.

      4. I think they may have had mixed blood somewhere down the line. The way that genetics works is very mysterious and amazing.

      5. Her brother looks middle eastern or Indian. They are so close but that is normal for twins. Sometimes people would mistaken opposite sex twins as lovers or boyfriend/girlfriend.

      6. Thanks Sara.

Wow her brother really does look Indian. They have to have mixed blood somewhere in the family line. That or they were adopted. It’s not surprising if they had interracial marriage somewhere in the family history because there were /are a lot of South- Asians living in HK.

      7. Grace is very beautiful. By far the best looking Miss HK for many years. Her brother definitely looks a bit Indian. He looks nothing like her. I think I saw a picture of her sister before, and somehow the sister looks nothing like Grace or her brother. Strange family…..

      8. I have a friend who is pure Vietnamese who looks exactly like a white girl with blond hair and blue eyes. She also has a sister who looks mix and another doesn’t look mix at all. FYI they have the same set of parents. So things like this does exist.

      9. @vannn,
You really do not know what lies in each gene pool. I used to have a friend who claimed to be pure Vietnamese and all, but she looks a bit mixed. Then later on, she discovered that she had a bit of French blood in her family. However, it was a bit distant but still affects her physical appearance. I have another friend that claims be pure Vietnamese as well but looks Eurasian. But then she also found out that she had European blood in her family line. Therefore, you really do not know for sure what in your family blood line, especially if it is distant.

      10. By the way, your hair can be dyed and you can wear contacts but your features if they are natural, are what people look at.

      11. With Michele Reis she knows clearly she is mixed and we see it in her name as well. Therefore with her there is nothing mysterious. She even has a full Portuguese official name. But Grace’s case is mysterious as we gave seen how Asian both her parents look.

  10. Congrats to her! Definitely thought she had the prettiest face of all the contestants, but can’t judge for her performance until I watch the pageant!

    1. She did good with everything. Haven’t seen a contestant like this for a long time. She is very elegance and her voice is very reserved and nice. She reminds me of how a real queen acts. Very beautiful. The way she answered her question was very smart and calm. She sounded very demure and educated. I wish she was a little taller though but I guess no one can be 100% right?

  11. The fact that VANCOUVER won second place shows how rigged the show is. From the very beginning CINDY ZHOU wasn’t supposed to win “TECHNICALLY”. But being “international students” and mommy and daddy paying out, it’s hard to compete with $$. I knew Montreal would place this year due to the fact that she’s tall and very “caucasian looking”. There aren’t a lot of decent looking girls. . That being said, Grace Chan is absolutely stunning. I wish she would fatten up before she goes into acting though.

    Anyone have the link?

    1. Most people expressed their frustration/disappointment on the 2nd runner up and how Zhiny didn’t place 3rd. Some of the comments Montreal got was: 季军有点像女版的关智斌!, 唔鐘意季軍:( 吉隆波果個好D 不過冠亞軍好好:D, 季軍簡直像泰國人妖, 季军问答环节 好像什么都没回答 怎么可以拿到啦!, etc.

If you watched Hacken Lee’s interview (link here: http://youtu.be/D4aiOIdrEIA) before watching the pageant, then you will know that Hacken (one of the judges) 看好 香港, 溫哥華, 蒙特利爾 and he said that the one he has the deepest impression from meeting the contestants was 泰國.

      1. I thought the ikea chair ruined it for me when zhiny performed her dance. She looks better in the photographs than live. Like Grace, she’s way too skinny. The talent segment, Montreal made me laugh so hard. She is so not fluent in Mandarin. Her accent and the way she pronounced words made me shudder. I do not speak the language but its quite clear. Grace Chan was quite articulate but AT TIMES I felt like it was staged .Clearly the judges were quite biased towards her. The last part, when she cried the minute her name got announced. . the way the judges were building up the hype………the whole thing seemed so staged. I don’t doubt Grace Chan ‘s beauty but seriously…..TVB continues to disappoint.

      2. I agree with you that the chair was in the way. But speaking from my experience as a MCVP dresser, contestants are able to choose their outfits, crops for their talent segments (unless it’s different for MCIP). I just wish Zhiny would answer more in Cantonese, instead of Mandarin. I mean, her Cantonese were pretty good. Unlike some other contestants, Zhiny didn’t have a heavy accent.. Most mixed contestants (eg. Fionn Wiens, sunshine nation 2011) have that type of accent but you could still understand what they are saying.

I think as a half-Italian, half-Chinese, Lucia (Montreal) did a pretty good job. Personally, I thought the representative from Vancouver was a bit skinny (her ribs were apparent). Felt that Zhiny was okay in terms of her weight.

      3. @Bubblez.. I was wondering do you guys have the creative liberty to style and dress the girls? Because…. in the last few years all Chinese pageants need serious help in the clothing department.

      4. No, the hair and makeup is usually done by a makeup and hair group (or a bunch of students who needs the experience). Depending on where the pageants are held and the organization that is responsible to host it, the clothing outfits would vary. For example, some of the outfits that were done for MCVP were done by two designers.

As a dresser, we just dress them according to each segment’s outfit. of course if we miss something crucial or if their makeup gets onto their outfits, we will get yelled at by Betty or Zoe. Most of the night gown/outfits and jewelery are rented. However, they get to pick their talent outfits and whatnot.

      5. But the hugest problem was the SHOES.
Most of the MCVP contestants complained about the shoes. Some shoes were standardized- so every contestant had to wear that same shoe and some didn’t wear the correct size or something. so most of them had to deal with very uncomfortable shoes.

    2. Vancouver is pretty but I would have never didn’t she would get 2nd place. To be honest, I wasn’t really feeling it from her. Maybe it’s just me and I have to watch it again to see how I felt. I was kinda surprise Zhiny didn’t get placed.

      1. I never thought she was pretty, especially at the vancouver pageants. Totally thought someone else was gonna win that.

    3. Actually, I was surprised Montreal placed at all… I felt there were many other’s who were prettier in the competition. But that is based on looks alone, I haven’t seen the pageant yet, so don’t know how they did with speaking/talent…

      1. I would have to agree as well. She kinda looks lost with the questions at times. And her talent part was kinda funny…

    4. Hacken is biased. He took an eye sweep of the contestants and announced all the Canadians are the most beautiful! How can that be? So frivolous.

And Zhiny should have won 3rd placing. Miss Montreal is a dark horse, coming out from nowhere, maybe no thanks to Hacken for his votes.

      1. Agree. I would have liked to see Zhiny win either 2nd or 3rd place.

      2. Who isn’t biased?
But the celebrity panel (Eg. Fred, Tracy, Elaine, etc.) had a say in the top 5 finalists as well, not just the main judges.

I wanted Lydia (the Melbourne rep) to place in top 5 as well. >_>

  12. OMG CONGRATZ TO GRACE CHAN 😀 so happy for her . She was stunning the whole time and she was calm as well 🙂

  13. Congratulation to Grace Chan!!! Well deserved!!! Her answers were all very good! 🙂 I am kinda surprise Zhiny didn’t get placed. I thought she would…

  14. I watched the show live last night and it was enjoyable to watch. Kudos to Grace Chan for her interesting and lively performance, which was better than her performance back in the Miss HK Finals. The second runner up from Montreal was god awful in answering questions, but hey she seemed innocent and charming, which probably redeemed her GOD AWFUL answers!

  15. I wonder why so many hongers send their kids to Vancouver for schooling. So many miss hk winners went to school there or actually live there at one point.

Also isn’t aimie Chan a Canadian citizen so how come she can enter the miss hk contest?

    1. To enter Miss HK contest, you need an active (not expired) HKID.

Actually, Sonija Kwok also went to SFU and finished her degree there before participating in Miss Hong Kong and MCI. Technically speaking, she is also a winner who represents both vancouver and hk, just how Grace graduated from SFU :/ I have a friend who is from HK but doing her schooling here.

  16. it seems tvb favours many miss chinese contestants from canada every year. why are there so little european contestant? i mean there are more chinese immigrants in europe than in canada.btw grace has a super performance, she deserves the crown.

    1. It could be a coincidence that the contestant did their schooling here.
As for European contestants, I think they stopped hosting it, but they can always enter Miss HK if they wish to participate or have a valid HKID.

  17. Grace has the overall package. We’ll be seeing her onscreen very soon…

  18. Is it just me, or does Grace seem really fake? Even during Miss Hong Kong, I felt that she was trying too hard to appear humble, when in fact she was really (over)confident and perhaps even arrogant. The moment before she was announced to be the winner last night, she had a big smile on her face that seemed sort of fake – or at least there was nothing to suggest that she was nervous. It was like she, perhaps rightfully, already knew she had won, but instantly burst into tears when her name was called out.

    1. lol, if that’s the case, then she’s not bad at putting on a show

  19. Undoubtedly Grace Chan is pretty but when she is standing Next to #6 from Malaysia ( I forgot her name ) she looks like a midget. In fact I think she is the shortest among all 16 contestant. When I saw the group shot she looked like a little kid among other contestants who is so much more taller than her.

  20. Congratulations Grace! Well deserve. Disappointed that #6 didn’t make it though. Not a fan of first and 2nd runner up. Don’t think they are that pretty. Especially, Lucia Lorigiano. Her face is so long and narrow.

  21. Great! Grats to Grace.

Now.. someone take her out for a celebratory feast and make sure she eats! 😛

    1. Why eat, when she can win a beauty pageant with that skinny frame of hers?

      1. Just because HK pageant voters like skeletally framed females doesn’t mean that it’s correct.

In the past in China it was considered beautiful to bind feet as well… eventually that passed (luckily) – hopefully this fascination with emancipated waifs will also pass…

      2. lol… typing too fast… of course I meant “emaciated” 😛 although, I guess in a sense, once HK comes to it’s senses and accepts normal body types from women, they will be “emancipated” as well 😛

  22. Just noticed how skinny #7 and #16 are O_o Their ribs are sticking out and it’s kind of scary

    1. Agree. Grace is skinny but her ribs doesn’t stick out (at least none of her swimsuit pictures show that)

  23. LOL the talent segment was kind of… not that great, except for the street jazz. Although they were definitely better than last year’s painting of tangyuan LOL

  24. I watched the entire pageant courtesy of YouTube and Grace absolutely deserved it!! Alt. her answers were a little pageant patty, she delivered with confidence, elegance, and poise. Def. one if the best miss Hong Kong winners in recent history!!!

I called her as the winner since day 1 if the preliminary interviews of MSHK which surprisingly, many people on jaynestars had Virginia and Sisley as their favorites. Haha.

  25. As for the other girls’ performance, they were a bit average…, Vancouver did perform and LOOKS MUCH BETTER ON CAMERA than in photos. Not as beautiful as Grace though.

Montreal actually… Looks a lot better in photos than on screen. Her teeth are distracting and her answers were not as good as Foshan, Sydney, New York, and maybe even KL. I think her preliminary meeting with the judges (which counts 30% of their final score) propelled her to 2nd RU in the end). If not, I thought KL or NY (dark horse of the night) could’ve snagged her 2nd RU crown.

  26. I thought it was pretty obvious that grace had the best performance. I’m really happy that she won. And that 2nd runner up (lucia?) She keeps reminding me of Lily Ho… there’s definitely some resemblance there. and the 1st runner up looks a lot like that girl who played the young charmaine sheh in When Heaven Burns.

    1. The first time I saw Lucia, i also saw that she resembles Lily Ho (:

  27. Oh yea, did anybody see the part where New York picked Raymond Lam over Louis Koo?? No wonder she scored so low in the end!! Who would pick that love obsessed man over the devilish handsome LOUIS KOO!? I laughed so hard when she chose him over Louis. He should be the one “waiting” lol.

    1. I definitely agree. Who would want to work with a person who just texts and talks on the phone every time during the middle of filming. Louis Koo has work ethics and motivation for acting.

    2. I think she said Raymond Lam cause she part of Tvb or WILL part of Tvb and Raymond Lam part of Tvb so she said Raymond LAM.

    3. The fact you noob haters that raymond lam more successfula than louis koo.haha. You such a failure type of loser.

      1. LOL Louis Koo is more successful than Raymond in fame and money wise unless your counting Raymonds dads money. But Raymond is a better singer.

  28. I watched the pageant Grace looked stunning! The clear winner and one of the best miss chinese international winners.

  29. Does anyone know if the talent performance from 01/22 (or 01/23) is available to watch online?

  30. After watching it I feel like number 10 should have won something for her street jazz.

  31. Congratulations Grace Chan! I could tell she would win after reading the previous article about her. Not only was she pretty, but also had a great mind-set and confidence. She deserved the win!

  32. Congratulations to Grace Chan and the runner-ups. I haven’t followed MHK or MCI since 2004. I find Grace Chan to resemble Anne Heung the most.

  33. Ms Montreal made an a@# of herself in the talent segment. It was difficult to watch. YUCK!

    1. Her talent segment made me laugh all the way though. Nobody understand at all what she sang. She even got 2nd runners up which is kinda hard to believe.

      1. Are you talking about her talent segment during the MCIP press conference or during the live show on Sunday (not sure if she showed her talent in the live show)?

If you’re talking about her talent segment prior to the pageant show, she sang an Italian song called Bella Ciao. I actually sang it too in choir before.

link to the song with eng subs: http://youtu.be/kRKQaLlDNSY

      2. Okay, I just saw her performance. The tune/elements seems to be similar to Bella Ciao. she combined some elements of bella ciao and made it her own (:

      3. Bubblez: Yeah, I was talking about her talent during MCIP.

      4. Yeah but I can tell that the presenters and much of HK not understanding what she sang but it was hilarious because some of the sentences, she related it to her pageant experience.

      5. You’re right. It was hilarious and entertaining I will give her credit for that.

  34. better to hold miss hongkong/int with new rules.. without makeup, heels, pretty dresses, and plastics

  35. Grace is the prettiest and most articulate among them, but she’s too thin and short to be a beauty queen. She won’t pass the international standard.

    1. She’s taller than me though, 5’3″. (:
And actually, one of the runner-ups in MCVP was 5’1″. So it means that in order to enter this pageant, one needs to be at least 5″1″ (:

      1. 5’3 or whatnot, Grace is looking like a midget in all her MCI group photos.

      2. She’s 5″4″. I’m 5″3″.
Actually, it’s the average height of a normal Asian. Both my mom and my sister are 5″4″.
