Hu Ge Feels Fearless after 2006 Car Crash: “I’ve Already Died Once”

When fans think of mainland Chinese actor Hu Ge (胡歌), two things often come to mind: his good looks, which have led to his “idol actor” label, and his breakout role, Li Xiaoyao from Chinese Paladin <仙劍奇俠傳>. But while his fans may think of him as a big hero, in real life, Hu Ge is not at all like the characters he portrays.

Different from His On-Screen Image

“I’m a carefree and happy optimist,” Hu Ge shared in a recent interview with Beijing Times. “I don’t care about my image [as an idol], and often I will earnestly do things that others would consider lowly.”

For Hu Ge, being labeled as an idol actor is one of the drawbacks of being a good-looking face in the entertainment industry. “Bearing the burden of being an idol is very tiring,” he said. “I am an actor. Being an idol is not my profession.”

Though he sometimes comes across as the serious type, Hu Ge revealed that he is actually rather lazy, which often surprises friends who visit his house. “They all ask, ‘Is this really your house?’” he said. “They all think I’m very unreasonable and germaphobic, and that I have to drink a certain type of water and own things of a certain brand.

“In fact, I do wish that I had more refined interests in my life,” he went on, “but I’m always so tired after work that I don’t have time to adorn my life.”

Looking for a Simple Love

Such a simple life, however, seems to befit Hu Ge, whose interview responses were quite to-the-point and refreshing. His specialty dish is scrambled eggs. His biggest wish is to be able to think highly of himself. If he won the lottery, he would use the prize money to continue buying lottery tickets. And what he looks forward to in love is returning home to a bowl of noodles and a hug from his wife.

Although he is currently single, Hu Ge shared that he wants to find a wife quickly because, as an only son, he is concerned about taking care of his parents. However, his other half “has not yet appeared.”

He joked that his parents are to blame for his singleness, since they did not let him date when he was in middle and high school. “They opposed [dating] for many years, and now they know they were wrong,” he said with a laugh.

Hu Ge also revealed that his parents are rather conservative, and that they would never agree to him dating an older woman, like his character does in his most recent drama, Life Revelation <生活啟示錄>. “I am still a rather filial person,” he said, “so I will give my parents’ feelings more consideration.”

A Life Filled with Punctuation Marks

Whether in school or work, Hu Ge experienced quite smooth sailing, at least up until 2006. That year, he was involved in a serious car accident, which killed his assistant and left Hu Ge with severe injuries. He ended up getting more than 100 stitches on his neck and right eye, and the filming of Legend of the Condor Heroes <射鵰英雄傳> was delayed for almost a year as he recovered from surgery.

Though some might think that the experience left both physical and mental scars, Hu Ge revealed that the accident helped him become less afraid of taking risks.

“Before [the accident], I lived a life without punctuation marks,” he explained. “There wasn’t even a comma. Suddenly, there came an exclamation mark, and it told me that thrills were a part of life.

“This exclamation mark didn’t make me afraid of doing things. In contrast, I have no fears. After all, I’ve already died once. What else do I have to fear?”

Huhhhh??? I really am not sure why he chose the grammar analogy just to say that he should live life to the fullest.

  3. Great to hear about Hu Ge and glad that he used the accident to his advantage and turned it into something positive. He is one go my favorite actors from China. I remember him saying in an interview that his dad was more handsome than him when he was young,

His parents really sound like my parents because my parents do not like jiedi relationships too. However, they are more open to it now and think it is ok if the girl were a few years older than the guy but not too much. They prefer the guy to be older.

  4. Also wanted to add that he is a bit like like his character Li xiao Yao since he claims to be carefree and an optimist. That was how Li xiao Yao is as his name means that as well.

  5. that is why i love Hu Ge. i remember that tragic accident and glad he was able to survive but of course sad because his manager did make it.

  6. I love Hu Ge I watched most of his mainland dramas already enjoy watching him esp LOTCH and CP

    1. Yes,he looks old in that photo. I think Hu Ge has a bony structured face that ages quickly.
