“Ip Man: Final Fight” to Begin Shooting in Foshan

In recent years, legendary martial artist, Ip Man, has become a popular film subject. Following Donnie Yen’s (甄子丹) famous portrayal in the successful Ip Man <葉問> films,Dennis To’s (杜宇航) younger portrayal in The Legend is Born – Ip Man <葉問前傳>, and Tony Leung’s (梁朝偉) version in the upcoming The Grandmasters <一代宗師>, yet another Ip Man film will be produced. This time, Anthony Wong (黃秋生) will portray the iconic hero!

In March 2012, it was announced that Ip Man: Final Fight <葉問-終極一戰>, was in production. Responsible for The Legend is Born – Ip Man, Director Herman Yau (邱禮濤) and producer Checkley Sin (冼國林) will return to helm Ip Man: Final Fight. Different from previous Ip Man films, Ip Man: Final Fight will focus extensively on Ip Man’s “final battle” in his life, following the period from his forties to his death.

In May 2012, it was revealed that veteran actor, Anthony Wong, will portray the titular character. The casting of Anthony Wong, who is of mixed Caucasian and Chinese descent, was an unexpected choice for many fans. However, the two-time Hong Kong Film Award Best Actor may be able to deliver something new to the character. To prepare for the role, Anthony reportedly studied Wing Chun for approximately one year.

Hong Kong Film Award Best Actress, Anita Yuen (袁詠儀), will star as Ip Man’s wife “Cheung Wing Sing.” Ip Man’s five martial arts pupils will be portrayed by Gillian Chung (鍾欣桐), Jordan Chan (陳小春), Timmy Hung (洪天明), mainland Chinese actress Jiang Luxia (蔣璐霞), and newcomer Chow Ting Yu (周定宇), who will also be the film’s Wing Chun consultant.

Famous martial artist and action director,Hung Yan Yan (熊欣欣), will portray Ip Man’s main antagonist and Eric Tsang (曾志偉) will portray Ip Man’s best friend, “Ng Chung.”

On August 5th, the cast of Ip Man: Final Fight arrived in Mount Xiqiao, Foshan, for the film’s blessing ceremony. Principal photography will begin this week in Xiqiao DreamWorks, the second largest film studio in China after Hengdian World Studios. Best known for its studio sets that imitate colonial Hong Kong of the early 1900s, the cast of Ip Man: Final Fight praised the studio for its realistic portrayal of the city. Anthony Wong exclaimed that Xiqiao DreamWorks had better filming facilities than Hengdian. Anita Yuen was most excited to see the old-fashioned train station, expressing that she felt as if she traveled back in time.

Anthony Wong Accepts Role in a Drunken Stupor

Anthony Wong revealed that he initially rejected the role of Ip Man due to its physical demands. Reportedly touched by Checkley Sin’s “sincerity,” Anthony finally accepted the role. Anthony joked, “He asked me to film this movie when I was drunk, so I said yes. When I woke up the next morning, I regretted my acceptance. I have no martial arts backgrounds. Filming this movie will be very difficult because it will have many fight scenes. I really didn’t want to film this! This movie shouldn’t be called Ip Man: Final Fight, it should be called Anthony Wong: Final Fight!”

“Ip Man: Final Fight” Will Be the Most Star-Studded “Ip Man” Film

Ip Man: Final Fight will take approximately two months to film. Produced at nearly $260 million RMB budget, this will be the most expensive Ip Man film to-date.

The film is backed by a strong cast, with Rose Chan (陳嘉桓), Liu Kai Chi (廖啟智), Jonathan Wong(王梓軒), Kenneth Lo (盧惠光), Wong Cho Lam (王祖藍), and Zhu Chouchou (周楚楚) filling in supporting roles. Kevin Cheng (鄭嘉穎), who will star as Ip Man in mainland China’s upcoming television drama adaptation, will also make a guest appearance in the film. Ip Man’s eldest son, 90-year-old Ip Chun (葉準), has signed on to make a brief cameo appearance as well.

  1. Anthony Wong may look more like a villain than as Ip Man. I feel this is a bit of a miscast.

I found Anthony’s joke that the film will be his “Final Fight” to be quite humorous. Very taxing to be filming this in the middle of summer.

Interesting to see Kevin Cheng in this film.

    1. Anthony Wong….wrong casting but supporting crew looks good (Timmy, Rose, Anita, Kevin, WCLam & Eric).

On the subject of Ip Man, DY’s 2nd IM movie wasn’t as good as the first but Dennis To’s IM was awesome.

    1. Her company probably paid to get her that supporting role! I read her company wishes to push her as the next upcoming Kung Fu actress (what a joke)! She looks weak as heck and is super short too, I simply cannot take her seriously when she ‘fights’.

    1. about 6.. one Ip-Man to hold the bulb & 5 to rotate him.

      1. One Donnie Yen, one Dennis To, one Tony Leung, one Anthony Wong, one Kevin Cheng? who is the last one? *horror*

    2. None. Ip Man doesn’t need light bulb, he is his own light.

  2. Ip Man has now become the Wong Fei Hung of the 1990s Hong Kong films. We need an iconic martial arts hero for every decade.

Hollywood has their endless superhero movies and Hong Kong has Ip Man. We need more choice!

    1. Unlike Hollywood heroes batman , iron man,or superman, Ip Man is real

    2. But Wong Fei Hung doesn’t have so many diverse actors playing him, he is pretty consistent in terms of casting. Ip Man is now the Bruce Lee of filmmaker, so many actors, whether right or wrong casting, none of them look like the real Ip Man though.

    3. Even so we are getting an overdose of Ip Man!! For goodness sake Gillian Chung in Ip man film. Who next??

      1. Chrissy Chau and Samantha Ko should join this for ‘freshness’ 😛

  3. Is this a joke? the casting alone is so much of joke and so miscasted.. I can’t imagine Athony Wong being the iconic hero and Gillian being IP Man’s student with that “naive” face and soft body?

      1. holy crap. 😆 😆

the one body that kinda go down well with me is 洪天明. the rest? 😆

      2. What her body has to do with this movie?
        Wow such nasty minds!

Wrong casting or stupid casting whatever!
The movie will be jam packed with action and that’s what I’m looking forward too.

      3. eh, you got it wrong lah. body = person lah you. it’s like “someBODY, anyBODY’ kind of body lah you. 😛

    1. Im sure having Gil in it can only help, imagine what all the guys will be doing at home after the movie…. 😉 I know I’ll have my lube ready

      1. lol i think guys will never view Gillian like before anymore.

    2. Yeah, hope this is a joke cause I seriously can’t take it, LOL. And I thought Kevin was a miscast.

The male casts looks like perverts so no wonder they cast Gil, hahaha.

      1. lol, i wanted to say that too exoidus that Chau Sang looks more like a pervert sifu rather than a martial sifu LOL..I wonder if Gil will play that “naive” student like she did in the edison’s scandal too?

      2. Add Rose Chan and repeat the incident of the 3 hungry wolves eating a free meal, hahaha

      3. U know, i just saw Eric Tsang was in the list too, that make another pervert will be in the movie..I think the movie category rate should be tripe “I”s rather than just double “II”.. I can image Chau Sang and Eric Tsang teaching Gillian in a personal training..

      4. Now I get the existence of Gillian and Rose in the movie. For the old pervs to feed on.

  4. >This time, Anthony Wong (黃秋生) will portray the iconic hero!

    YES! YESS!!!

I don’t care how bad this will be, Anthony Wong will make this worth it in the end.

  5. Surely they could find 100%-chinese actor to star in this.. Anthony Wong ??
    Just doesn;t seem right

  6. I like Anthony but he admits it himself he has no martial art background and that’s a big no no. Gillian on the other hand cannot act and she looks constipated with that wanna-look-tough face whenever she fights lmao! The casting is just bad!

  7. I like Anthony’s acting. I’m willing to give it a shot. Frankly, I’m bored with Donnie’s version. I’d rather see a stand alone Ip Man film than more sequels. Donnie’s second IM did not Live up to the first and I don’t think the third one will either. I think it would be better plot wise to just have Donnie do another IM movie unrelated to the first instead of him doing a sequel.

  8. i think anthony wll be refreshng change… wll def catch ths.. looking frward to it

  9. Sooo… any bets on which martial artist they’re going to pimp out next?

IM. I think I’ll always associate Donnie with Iron Monkey instead of Ip Man. Now that was good.

    1. God I loved Iron Monkey! Donnie had some fresh moves back then but now it seems he uses the same moves constantly in each of his new releases. Well, he is getting older.

I can’t say Anthony is the best choice but he would definitely bring something different to Ip Man. Can’t wait!

  10. Even worst casting. I was very confused about the Ip Mans series and movies. Kinda too many Ip Mans.

    1. Infact anthony suits ip man ‘s character quite well because in his later life of ip man is quite struggle to withstand poverty , and tackle tobacco and opium addiction. Not really a good ending for ip man but I think anthony can handle this character quite well

      1. They can also explore the “alternate sexual side” of Ip Man, in which case, Anthony Wong would be very suitable. LOL!!

  11. ok, i really enjoyed ip man when it first came out. when the sequel followed, i thought it was only just ok. but now they making part 3 (?), a tony leung version, a tv version and now this. sick to death of hearing about any ip man production now.

  12. Wow, the Ip Man franchise really have legs. I bet ya this is not the “Final Fight”.

Potentially in the work are “Ip Man vs Aliens from Outer Space”, “Ip Man vs His Evil Twin”, and “Ip Man vs Wong Fei Hong: a Time Traveled Confrontation”.

  13. OK, I think the title of this movie ought to be changed to “Ip Man: the Final Perversion”.

First scene should should how the old sifu “discipline” his top student. Hehehe
