The international box office success of Donnie Yen’s (甄子丹) Ip Man <叶问> spurred a franchise, as well as fans’ thirst for more Wing Chun action. Donnie’s two Ip Man movies have been the most successful martial arts films in recent years. Aside from the market flooded with various Ip Man movies in 2012 and 2013, mainland China will produce an Ip Man television series as well!

It was announced that Donnie Yen will film Ip Man 3 in 3D at the end of the year. After 13 years in the making, Wong Kar Wai’s (王家卫) The Grandmasters <一代宗师>, starring Tony Leung (梁朝伟), will be released on December 18, 2012. Furthermore, Herman Yau’s ( 邱禮濤) Ip Man: The Final Chapter, starring Rose Chan (陳嘉桓) will be filmed in the summer.

Capitalizing on the Ip Man trend, mainland China will be producing a television version. Famous director and writer, Fan Xiaotian (范小天) will serve as the director of the Ip Man TV drama. Scriptwriter, Zhang Tan (张炭) of New Dragon Inn <新龙门客栈> and Once Upon a Time in China <黄飞鸿> fame, will serve as the Executive Producer and Script Editor. Taiwanese talent, Yang Pui Pui (杨佩佩), involved in Heaven Sword and Dragon Sabre <倚天屠龙记>, Return of the Condor Heroes <神雕侠侣>, and The Smiling, Proud Wanderer <笑傲江湖>, will serve as the Artistic Producer.

Scriptwriter, Zhang Tan indicated that the TV drama will not only speak about the life of Ip Man, but rather the story about Chinese martial arts. During his era, martial artists such as Ip Man deeply believed that martial arts strengthened the people as well as China.

Ip Man’s son, Ip Chun (叶准) and Ip Ching (叶正) will serve as the martial arts consultants for the Ip Man TV drama. The outstanding production team behind the drama has already generated hot buzz for the drama.

The lead actor to play Ip Man in the TV drama has not been determined yet. The ideal candidate should possess a martial arts background.

Jayne: Very curious as to who will be cast in China’s TV version of Ip Man. The qualifications of the production staff sound quite impressive in this mega-project.

    1. Stephy says:

      Vincent Zhao main lead lo…hahahaha

    2. Funn Lim says:

Probably an up and coming young China actor who probably is from HK or Taiwan. Funny isn’t it?

    3. fez says:

too many ip mans!!!! they’re wringing water out of the towel until it goes dry!

    4. Vivien says:

ROFL if Vincent Zhao got picked it will be a slap to Donnie’s face ROFL

      • Tony says:

Basically Zhao knocking off Ip Man the same way he did with Jet Li’s Once Upon A Time In China and be labeled a Donnie copy-cat ;)

        • Addy says:

I actually really liked Zhao’s version of WFH. And Once Upon a Time V is my fav in the series because it’s the most hilarious one LOL

    5. Amy says:

This better be good. Tho I was hoping for a HK production of Ip Man.

    6. pingtann says:

Asking Vincent Zhao to be the drama’s Ip Man is like shaving Donnie Yen’s xxxxx hair……That’s 1000% not possible given Donnie’s domineering (new No.1 brother) status in the Chinese martial art world.

I would recommend Edison Chen to be the new Ip Man……Reason:

      1. No conflict of interest with Donnie Yen.
      2. The boring stone-looking martial art image will be repackaged to include lots of new & funny sexual tastes which will greatly help to broaden the target market to include more youngster & larger base of sexy daring audience! You need more viewership to attract better quality of advertising revenues…..
      3. Even though Edison has limited background in Kungfu, this is not a problem at all given that Edison is very flexible and gifted with a very talented acting personality to learn and easily fit into any role (of any complexities) he partakes.

    7. Kidd says:

Ya Pei Pei is not a popular name among wuxia fans due to her bad adaptations of JY novels. Beside TVB, Yang Pei Pei was another person who Jin Yong has banned from adapting anymore of his novels.

But, since she will just be an artistic producer, maybe she won’t affect the script. But, honestly, the costume and make up of those wuxia series she produced was nothing to shout about.

    8. EvilDollaR says:

Jackie Wu Jing would be nice candidate.

    9. moses says:

It will be a nationalism and racist tv serial if this Ip Man made in China ,you can except those Chinaman actor and it netizen keep bashing the west ,Americans ,Japanese as they always do,as you can see in the Ip man 2 movie and True Legend.
      Made by TVB is better.

    10. Light Yagami says:

They probably have someone young and famous play the role. prob nic tse, he did make wing chun with yuen bao, so he has the wing chun down.

i would want hu ge to play the role too, really want to see em be in an actual martial arts movie, where he has to train and do real martial arts.

but i would rather have donnie yen make the series and star in it.
