Joel Chan Ready to Act Again After Breakup with Florinda Ho?

Joel Chan (陳山聰) incurred backlash when it was revealed that he divorced his wife of over ten years, Ponny Yeung (楊渡萍), for a much younger and richer Florinda Ho (何超雲). The public was quick in calling Joel to be a man who “loves to eat soft rice,” and the new relationship also allegedly led Joel to have a falling out with former best friends, Christine Ng (伍詠薇) and Sharon Chan (陳敏之).

Joel, whose fan base was increasing when he was taking on prominent roles in popular dramas last year, decided to give up his chances with TVB when his relationship with Florinda came to light.

Just when the general public was beginning to believe that Joel and Florinda’s love will last, a recent tabloid magazine exposed that Joel and Florinda’s relationship may be on the rocks. After attending Florinda’s mother’s birthday dinner on December 5, the couple reportedly had a big argument and have been on poor terms with each other since.

The tabloid magazine claimed that Joel had been drinking extensively, and even begged Viriginia Lok (樂易玲), head of TVB’s management, to arrange a comeback for him. Although Joel’s contract with TVB has not expired, he was reportedly frozen by the company for not meeting the requirements of the contract earlier this year. Asked if Joel had requested for a comeback in the industry, Virginia Lok did not give a direct answer, but implied that Joel had indeed contacted her recently.

TVB producer Lee Tim Shing (李添勝) confirmed that Joel made a visit to TVB City last Friday. Tim Gor said, “I asked Joel whether he will still act or not and he said he will have to think about it.”

When tabloids exposed Joel and Florinda’s rocky relationship, the couple did not step up to denounce the reports as with previous similar claims. Florinda’s younger sister, Laurinda Ho (何超蓮) did not deny nor confirm the breakup rumors, “Do not ask me! I will not answer anything about my sister’s matters!”

  1. Joel Chan is a dog and serves him right, divorcing his wife so he could date a rich man’s daughter. Hope Florinda kicks him to the curb and his TVB career is over.

    1. I don’t think he dated Florinda for money. He seems to be a guy who is passionate in love and go with his feelings. He might also have Peter Pan syndrome and always want to have excitement in life and not grow ‘mature’. Maybe his older wife couldn’t keep up with his desired lifestyle. She is after all 10 years older than him.

      1. @Kidd, are you implying it is ok for a person to divorce their wife or husband because they cannot keep up with their lifestyle, that is ridiculous. A real man will not be so easily tempted, take for example Hugh Jackman, the Australian actor. Hugh’s wife is 13 years his senior and they have been married for 15 years and never spent more than 2 weeks apart. He has starred with some very goodlooking actress, younger than his wife and he hasn’t cheated on her.

      2. @ Samantha

I imply no such thing. Please don’t read more meaning into what I wrote. There’s no hidden meaning between/under/below/above the line. What I mean is what I wrote.

You said he divorce his wife so that he can date a rich girl. I feel that he did not date Florinda for money. That’s all I said. There’s moral judgement in the statement.

I did not say/imply/hint what he did was right or wrong. It’s a neutral observation .

  2. Not surprised if Florinda and Joel will break up. After all, their backgrounds are so different. Rich kids are usually spoiled and Florinda is a super rich kid in her prime age. She has a lot of time and big chances to look around for her prince.

  3. I suppose errr.. yeah? I mean if he puts his mind into it he can be a better actor, like how he was in LSA. So I will say perhaps her loss our gain. Perhaps.

    1. Ah hopefully so. I really like his acting and hope he can make a comeback. The best of luck for him! As for his relationship…I think he should put things like that aside to prevent further harm to his image.

  4. Joel Chan seems to be a talented actor. He always did well in his roles, such as in “The Last Steep Ascent”, “Curse of the Royal Harem”, etc.

If he did not quit acting in the last year or two, he should be the one highly promoted by TVB now.

    1. Agreed though he does seen like a jerk you can’t deny he is talented acting wise.

  5. Eh, I think everybody deserves a second chance including him. He did well in TLS, I loved his performance. He and Samantha Ko really shined as a couple, and made the show fun to watch. He has potential, just not the right roles. His personal interests also set him back. If he comes back now, a few years down the road he will have a shot at the awards for Tvb.

    1. Agreed…. People should not get too involved or comment about his personal life but appreciate his find acting skills.

  6. So his plan failed. I thought he would knock her up ASAP in order to get his perpetual bond i.e long term food ticket, LOL

  7. so quit acting just because he is dating rich woman!! wow… and what he do for living..? that woman support him..? what is he thinking?? leave ur wife for more rich and young woman and do u aspect all rich woman want to support u forever…?

    1. Well Joel is already rich, I heard he owns a few gyms or something. Florinda is just richer than him, I suppose he just wants to be more rich?

      1. wonder how much is florinda worth? her dad currently has 3 wives n 17 children, would rather see her dad donate most of his wealth to charity though, too much money not doing his children any good, stanley’s basic responsibility as a dad is to give his children the best education money can buy, the rest should be up to his children.. get own bread for life and not depend on their dad or look forward to their share of his money

  8. I don’t like to see difficulties for anyone, but a return to acting can only benefit those of us who enjoy good acting on television 🙂

  9. TVB should consider asking Florinda Ho to act in a drama. It would surely boost TVB’s ratings against CTI

  10. florinda’s facebook profile is still showing “in a relationship with joel chan”.

  11. great! joel can use florinda’s (family’s) connections to go back into acting, ms lok must bow to him haha

  12. sorry, but i don’t like him as an actor, he does not have the look or the talent, he looks kinda common to me, would not notice him if he is walking down the street as he is not the charming type, don’t know what florinda see in him

  13. Don’t really care about his love life, but I would definitely look forward to his return as an actor! He really captured my attention in the last steep ascent. Me and my mom were both thinking what a pity it is that he chose to give up his career to date a rich girl

  14. A talented actor who can play convincingly in both good guy and bad guy roles.

  15. I hope he does make a return. Regardless of if these breakup rumors are true, I think he should continue to film for TVB. He’s been gaining popularity over the past year and it’s just a shame to quit.

  16. This guy has the potential to become a lead actor. Why waste the talent? He still is rich, can hook up other girls around the corner anytime.

    1. Agree. Joel Chan is tall and decent looking, and has potential to become a lead actor.

    2. Larry3,

Joel’s sudden flight with Florinda and willing to put behind his acting career shows that he’s flaky and not that dedicated to his craft. With such a track record, don’t know if TVB will promote him to lead actor, which is still highly competitive.

How old is Joel btw? Pushing 40?

      1. Jayne:
Agree. Doubt if TVB will still promote him to act 1st lead roles after his recent failure to make commitments in some TVB drama series.

        Joel Chan is 36 now.

    1. He looks like Nicolas Tse and Ekin Cheng – I don’t like those type of stiff box faces that can only coast so far on looking “cool.” I like intricate nooks and crannies and faces with DEPTH like Francis Ng (actually I only like Francis Ng because he is hilarious).

Who else has a great face? I guess in Chinese cinema, it is what is inside that shines out and that really matters which is why actors leap at the chance to do Johnny To films to redeem themselves from the stock characters they play for TVB for little money and even less artistic respect.

  17. all of Stanley Ho’s daughters including Pansy and not just Josie look like murderers. There is something about that funky troll layout of their features that gives me the heebie jeebies.

And given the stories about Josie’s marshalling of her husband’s activities, I wouldn’t think that slipper rice from Florinda will be easy to swallow. From her interviews on youtube, Florinda acts like she wants attention and friendship from HK people but doesn’t really get any of it otherwise she wouldn’t say the things she does to young girl reporters.

Also, why do those daughters wear skintight club dresses in broad daylight? Their bodies may be youthfully attractive but they are not exactly examples of charming Hong Kong girl physiques.

  18. Rachel Khoo is another frightening looking hybrid. I can’t believe how some violent some of them turnout. WTH!
