Zhang Ziyi Outraged By Prostitution Claims: “I Will Sue!”
Zhang Ziyi was accused of exchanging sex for millions of dollars with Chinese politician, Bo Xilai earlier. According to Apple Daily, Ziyi allegedly slept with Bo Xilai at least 10 times between 2007 to 2011. Ziyi was outraged by the claims, vowing to sue the Chinese media outlets for fabricating the defamatory rumors.
Zhang Ziyi said, “This ‘news’ is a complete lie. Both within the article and between the lines, there were contemptuous lies!”
Outrageous Sex Claims
Without fully investigating their story, Apple Daily recently published a report claiming that Zhang Ziyi had met Chinese politician, Bo Xilai in 2007 through wealthy businessman, Xu Ming. The tabloid also alluded that Ziyi pocketed $100 million by sleeping with other wealthy and powerful men over the last 10 years.

After appearing at the 12th Annual Chinese Film Media Awards, Zhang Ziyi spoke before a crowded room of reporters. Abandoning her normal blase attitude towards past negative rumors, Ziyi was outraged by the recent prostitution allegations. She felt that the tabloids had further sensationalized recent political topics by spinning a sexual angle to provoke and fool the public.
Throughout the press conference, Zhang Ziyi pounded her hand on the table, vowing to sue media outlets who fabricated such defamatory rumors about her reputation. Ziyi said, “Once again, thank you for your support. If the media continues to issue deceiving reports to fool the public in an intensifying manner, then I will strike one after another!”
Although saddened by the incident, Ziyi vowed to not remain a victim of tabloid sensationalism. She will pursue legal action over the unfounded prostitution claims at all costs. “The event has entered the legal process. No matter what it costs, I will use legal means to hold the responsible parties accountable!”
Currently filming final scenes for director Wong Kar Wai’s The Grandmasters <一代宗師>, Zhang Ziyi was unable to attend the 65th Annual Cannes Film Festival earlier.

China never really liked her. And if it is untrue, then yes she has a case. My heart tells me it is true. Things can be pretty seedy over there. She has a right to be outraged though. And even if true, she must still sue. But let’s learn from Oscar Wilde’s experience.

The allegations apparently originated from Boxun.com (http://www.boxun.com/news/gb/china/2012/05/201205282206.shtml). Apple Daily likely picked up the story from there. I don’t follow Boxun so I have no idea about their track record when it comes to truthiness. On one hand I wouldn’t be surprised that there are seedy things going on in the world of showbiz and politics, but on the other hand the amount of money involved sounds preposterous.

Boxun’s allegations are quite wild, especially price tagging each intimate transaction. Looking through their site, as early as May 9th, they started linking Zhang Ziyi to this scandal. Except at the time, they referred to her as Zhang XX before they grew more bold recently to publish her full name.
There is a price to making such direct allegations against a well-known celebritiy. Which is why unless the involved parties confess to tabloids directly, we usually do not hear of such explosive accounts.
Most publications would be unwilling to publish such news, obviously for fear of lawsuits. Nevermind whether there is truth or not. So very surprised that Zhang Ziyi’s name was so directedly singled out in this case.
Jayne, it might mean they think they have proof or they have a huge compensation fund ready to pay her OR she may have recently did something that caused some big time person angry enough to use this to destroy her. However my feeling is it is the truth. There has always been such allegations of her being materialistic, aligning herself with rich and all. at first it sounded like libel but it consistent enough, there is always some truth.
Boxun is an overseas dissident web site, known for its anti-China stance. ZZY is a name that is conveneiently used in the smearing campaign against Chinese politicians.
It is not unknown that actresses do sleep with movie producers / executives in order to get choice roles. However, it is very rare and unlikely for a top actress to go around sleeping with politicians ( like high class prostitues ) in order to earn big buck.
ZZY is wealthy enough, and thus is not hungry enough to sleep with old men just for the buck. Infact, the rumours are more believable if they claim that she slept with Hollywood (gweilo) producers in order to act in Last Geishas. However, this news will not serve the political agenda of the Boxun website.
I am not her fan but I do feel that nobody deserves to be maligned and suffer damaged reputation based on unsubstantiated rumours, even if one is a celebrity. Her rights as has ben infringed. There is a Confucius saying of ‘Don’t do what you don’t want others to do onto you’.

this woman already has everything she wants and needs, she achieved an award and fame where no other chinese actress has before. ZZ has more than enough money to last her several lifetimes from a successful career. once you are rich a certain pt, any additional money does not have the same effect, a person like her wouldn’t risk her own reputation. every woman has dignity and pride, i believe ziyi is a very prideful person and would feel it beneath her to have to resort to this.

It’s such a populous, huge country, not everyone can manage it. Even the leaders of some of the tiniest countries around can’t manage their countries effectively. When a country is as populous as China, a protest(be it good/bad) can get out of hand very quickly. Even if only 1% of ppl comes out to the streets that would be a minimum of 10mil. ++ people already. Though, what Bo Xilai did is very, very wrong but that doesn’t happened only to chinese politicians. There’s quite some murderous politicians around if you ask me, even the one from the country that I lived in killed a secret lover of his just because she wanted a few millions $ from for a deal she helps to closed for him. That garnered him hundreds of mils. Unfortunately, $ makes certain people do alot of kinds of things.

I honestly don’t even know what to believe or what not believe at times. However, if there is some truth to this, I don’t think it is only ZZY that is doing this. We always and often hear about actresses sleeping with directors and other powerful people just get the leading role, fame and other things… In ZZY’s case, I am not sure if it was for money or fame since I think she already has a lot of both of that. It’s not like she is poor or is unknown like many other actresses are. But who really knows the truth except for her??? The media has been known to make up things with nothing to back up at all too,but not sure if that is the case this time. If she didn’t do it, then all the best in the case against the paper. I’d be surprised, however, that they would go to press with this if they didn’t have some kind of source on the story.
If there’s any truth to this, my best guess is it happened early in her career. Maybe they were counting on Ziyi being too embarrassed about her past to take legal action.
Maybe they changed the date to recent years to make the story more sensational. Starlets prostituting themselves is par for the course but megastars prostituting themselves is big news.
