Peter Ho Replaces Wallace Chung in “Xifei’s Royal Love in the Palace”
Peter Ho (何潤東) will star in the upcoming Chinese palace drama Xifei’s Royal Love in the Palace <熹妃传> as the Yongzheng Emperor alongside Chinese actress Viva He Hongshan (何泓姍).
In October, it was reported that the studio behind Ruyi’s Royal Love in the Palace <如懿传> has been working on a new television drama about the life of Zhen Huan, also known as Consort Xi (Xifei). Based on the book of the same name, Xifei’s Royal Love in the Palace is regarded as “Zhen Huan 2.0” due to the story featuring the same character as the lead of 2011’s Empresses in the Palace <后宫·甄嬛传>, which starred Sun Li (孙俪) as Zhen Huan.
Though sources at the time said Hong Kong actor Wallace Chung (鍾漢良) would be starring as Xifei’s lead role the Yongzheng Emperor, insiders are now reporting that Peter Ho has already signed on the role. Peter’s last Qing Dynasty drama was 2017’s Nothing Gold Can Stay <那年花开月正圆>, which also starred Sun Li.
Viva, who played Concubine Mei in Ruyi, will play the title character of Zhen Huan.
Filming for Xifei is projected to start this month.

Sun Li was really great in that role, why are they trying to surpass that when it’s only been 7 years? I can understand if producers try to tell the same story but in a different manner to relate to a new generation. But 7 years? That’s not long enough for a generation to grow/change, especially since this is an ancient drama and not a modern drama whereby it needs to be more “current” to be in line with modern thinking and themes such as feminism, etc. to stay relevant with the 2019 audience
It’s an ancient drama, how much can it change in 7 years?! Would appreciate if they can spend more money creating new stories
Well, I’m a fan of Peter’s, so I might watch for his sake. At least the new adaptation will showcase a younger, handsomer emperor than the original drama. That makes it easier to digest.

Honestly no palace drama will be able to surpass Zhen Huan or Sun Li’s acting. There’s really no need to try to ride off the fame of Zhen Huan and just disappoint fans… Ruyi was suppose to be a sequel to Zhen Huan. Still it paled compared to Zhen Huan. So many palace drama tried to be like Zhen Huan or surpasses it but either the acting or plot paled to it.
I like Peter, but didn’t really care for Viva’s acting in Ruyi. She was one of the concubines whom I thought had a tendency to over-exaggerate.
Likely to skip this drama, unless it turns out to be very well received.
