Kim Woo Bin and Suzy Star in “Genie, Make a Wish”
South Korean stars Kim Woo Bin and Bae Suzy returns to Netflix for rom-com Genie, Make a Wish. With a script spearheaded by Kim Eun Sook and directed by Ahn Gil Ho, the series promises to be a lighthearted experience blending magic, fate and p0layful humor.
The series follows a mysterious genie named Iblis (Kim Woo Bin), who wakes up from a thousand-year slumber to grant three life-changing wishes to an emotionless girl named Ki Ga Young (Bae Suzy). Despite his magic and devilish charm, the genie struggles to adapt to the modern society while an unexpected and whimsical romance blossoms between and the emotionally withdrawn Ki Ga Young.
Kim Woo Bin is no stranger to scriptwriter Kim Eun Sook as the two previously worked together in A Gentleman’s Dignity and The Heirs. Regarding his role as Iblis, Kim Woo Bin shares, “My character is multifaceted, at times cheerful, at others cruel, at times determined, and at times insignificant. Although he looks like a human, he’s not truly human. This character may seem strange and incomprehensible to others, but to himself, he is at ease. To capture this unique sense of contradiction, I put a lot of effort into understanding and portraying it.”
Suzy also shares her enthusiasm for her role, “My character, Ga Young, has a social maladaptive personality and is relatively emotionally lacking. She grew up in a warm environment but lives a mechanical life. Although such personalities are generally frightening to people, Ga Young is not a dangerous person who lives by established rules and routines.”
Genie, Make a Wish reunites Suzy and Kim Woo Bin after the two actors last collaborated in Uncontrollably Fond nine years ago. Suzy believes that they have a stronger chemistry than their previous work, “There were a lot of comedic moments that required frequent improvisation and it was incredibly fun to act out. Kim Woo Bin was also incredibly considerate, making filming a joy.”
Kim Woo Bin agrees and add, “It felt like only three years had passed and we are still very close. We didn’t need to spend time getting to get reacquainted. We can discuss our roles and the project directly. Spending time with Suzy, then and now, is always a joy. Her acting is also excellent, which I’m truly impressed by.”
While the attention is on Kim Woo Bin and Suzy at the promotional press conference, the absence of director Ahn Gil Ho and Screenwriter Kim Eun Sook sparked speculation. It was reported that Lee Byeong Heon was originally named as the director but he abruptly replaced by Ahn Gil Ho. Furthermore, director Ahn Gil Ho is currently embroiled in a bullying controversy and the thus the production team opted to limit the press conference to the actors to avoid media questions on the sensitive topics.
