Rebecca Zhu and Osanna Chiu Reflect on Their Showbiz Beginnings
TVB pageant queen Rebecca Zhu (朱晨麗) and actress Osanna Chiu (趙璧渝) recently surprised students at Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education by appearing as guest lecturers. During a two-hour session, the duo opened up about the highs and lows of showbiz life. Both actresses’ paths to the entertainment industry could not be more different. Rebecca won the Miss Hong Kong pageant, while Osanna joined the artiste training class. Their candid confessions had students hanging onto every word.
Rebecca joked she joined the pageant because she was “broke,” admitting Cantonese language barriers nearly defeated her. Recalling her pageant days, the 38-year-old beauty queen admitted, “The biggest challenge was speech for me. I had the courage to stand on that stage because I needed to make a living. I knew that if I didn’t at least try, then I will surely fail. At the time, I wasn’t too familiar with the entertainment industry. I didn’t even know how to pose! However, I am grateful. During my pageantry, I had a lot of local Hong Kong women help me along the way. They helped me practice my Cantonese. I continue to keep in touch with a lot of them today. My parents begged me withdraw from the competition because of the swimsuit segment, but I wanted to persevere and push through.”
During her early acting career, Rebecca made a lot of amateur mistakes, such as blocking the camera during filming. It was the public criticism that hit her hardest. She shared, “All I did was cry.” Eventually, Rebecca learned to toughen up and stop reading negative comments.
Osanna confessed she admired Rebecca’s courage, saying she could never handle the pressure of pageants. Instead, Osanna followed her acting passion by enrolling in a training program. Osanna admitted that she worries AI-generated dramas could replace human actors entirely. “As artistes, we have to keep giving the audience a sense of freshness and newness. It’s a big challenge. There’s AI-generated dramas now where all the actors and actresses are AI. Perhaps in the future, there wouldn’t be a need for human actors at all!”
