A film adaptation of the popular time-traveling novel, Bu Bu Jing Xin <步步驚心>, is currently in the works, with Taiwanese actress Ivy Chen (陳意涵) slated to play the female lead. The movie is expected to open in theaters in the second half of 2015.
Based on the Tong Hua (桐華) novel of the same name, the Bu Bu Jing Xin movie marks the first time that the story, which tells of how white-collar worker Zhang Xiao accidentally travels back in time to the Qing Dynasty, will be adapted for the big screen. The novel was previously adapted into a television drama, which starred Nicky Wu (吳奇隆), Cecilia Liu (劉詩詩), and Kevin Cheng (鄭嘉穎).
The screenplay of the Bu Bu Jing Xin movie will remain faithful to the novel’s romantic storyline, but the film will feature a new, mysterious character that is aware of Zhang Xiao’s modern-day persona, thus adding more suspense to the story. The film will also add more conflict by emphasizing Zhang Xiao’s modern lifestyle and way of thinking.
Apart from Ivy Chen, the cast also includes Chinese-Canadian actor Shawn Dou (竇驍), Taiwanese actor Tony Yang (楊祐寧), and mainland Chinese actor Yu Bo (于波). However, it has not yet been revealed which roles the actors will portray. Though Shawn and Tony were given the option to leave their heads unshaven, both actors decided to shave their heads after seeing the character designs.
The movie adaptation is produced by HS Media, the company behind actress Vicki Zhao’s directorial debut, (趙薇) So Young <致我們終將逝去的青春>, which was also adapted from a well-known novel. HS Media General Manager Wang Chen (王琛) shared that the company valued the Bu Bu Jing Xin brand so much that preparation for the film lasted three years.
The Bu Bu Jing Xin movie is currently filming at Hengdian World Studios. Filming is scheduled to continue until January of next year.
