Fan Bingbing Steps Up the Game For “X-Men: Days of Future Past”

Fan Bingbing (范冰冰) will finally realize her Hollywood dreams when American superhero film X-Men: Days of Future Past hit theaters worldwide on May 23. Despite frequent criticism over her diva attitude, Bingbing displayed professionalism during filming and found the experience eye-opening.

Although Bingbing made her Hollywood debut in 2013’s Iron Man 3, she only appeared briefly in the Mainland Chinese version and her scene was completely removed from the film’s international cut. Luckily, she was given a second chance to introduce herself to the global audience via the latest installment of the X-Men movie series. Bingbing plays the role of Blink, a mutant with teleportation powers who fights alongside franchise villain Magneto.

Different from the original comics, Blink has been re-written as an Asian character in an attempt to inject international flavor into the film. While her ethnicity was changed, the production team is careful to retain Blink’s distinctive look. Bingbing had to sit in a makeup chair for four hours every day in order to achieve Blink’s violet skin and piercing green eyes. She also committed herself to exercising three hours a day to fit into her tight costume, which weighed over twenty pounds.

Despite the hardships from filming in English and in full costume, Bingbing is very proud of her involvement and is even more so for putting China under the global spotlight. When asked to discuss the film’s Chinese aspects at its Beijing premiere on May 13, Bingbing replied without hesitation, “I am the best Chinese element in this film.”

Bingbing is very open-minded when it comes to learning from her Hollywood colleagues. Praising her co-stars’ professionalism, she was pleasantly surprised to find that most are very humble and offered help freely. “Every single actor helped me complete my shots. Even though the cameras were not on them, they still stood opposite of me [to serve as position reference]. I felt very touched.”

  2. its a pity that fan bing bing has only has a minor in the x-men,im more excited in transformers 4 where li bing bing plays a prominent role and hongkong as the background of the movie.

  3. Oh her hair, make up and dress in the photo just look wrong. Not a good look for her in my view.

  4. hollywood using chinese actors trying to milk the chinese box office. it worked for iron man 3 which is a pretty bad movie in the franchise.

  5. Why does Fan Bing Bing look so over-dressed every time she’s on the red carpet? I always feel like her hair is too much for her over-the-top dresses. But that’s just my opinion

    1. Hi Elle,

Agree with you, she looks very plastic to me. These days I dont know which artiste has “true natural beauty” anymore.

    2. Besides, if there is one occasion where you can over-dress… the red carpet would be it 😉

  6. she looks like she hasn’t aged a day since the princes.

  7. How come all chinese actresses have long face with pointnie chin? They all look alike…

    1. More like V shape face,
That type of face is considered beauty in Chinese people eyes, just like white skin in China is considered high-class and beautiful.

      1. LeilaFan
Oh I see so many of them would have plastic surgery to have that shape?

      2. V shape face/white skin is also standard of beauty for Korean girls. Many undergo jaw shaving procedures for this look.

  8. Is it a poor translation or an arrogant comment, “I’m the best chinese element in this film.” Lol, that’s for her to say there’s not a single Chinese person working the digital effects, music soundtrack, script and etc.

I’ve never liked this girl. Either she truly is a diva or the media likes to present her as a diva.

    1. Pandamao,
It’s Fan Bingbing’s confidence. We can watch X-Men and see if we agree with her.

    2. Isn’t her role really small and insignificant? I used to really like her but her over confidence is getting to me. It is good to be confident but not over confident, especially when you are like an ant in Hollywood against all of these others big American stars.

  9. not a fan of fan bingbing but good on making it into hollywood.

  10. Most publicised glamarous ke-le-fe role ever. Anyway Hugh Jackman looks great despite the cancer thing.

    1. this is her second kelefeh role in a hollywood movie, but this time her kelefeh role is what bigger, lol.

      1. “Every single actor helped me complete my shots. Even though the cameras were not on them, they still stood opposite of me [to serve as position reference]. I felt very touched.”

Just doing their job. And making sure kelefeh not going to screw up. LOL! Hollywood cashing in or what.

  11. Fan Bing Bing’s publicity totally overshadows her performances. I remember her more as a red carpet fashionista and a highly scandalous celeb than an actress.

  12. i think fan bingbing is forbes magazine top most famous celebrity (asian)…. since she has the quality to be at the top, she is entitle for her over the top diva and annoying attitude as she indeed have the personality of an aristocratic high class rich persona to boost

    1. Whether you qualify to or not,it is always good to be humble or else, once you fall from the pedestal, people will laugh hard at you. People will admire you more if have more class, humbleness and modesty.

      1. Hi HeTieShou,

Fully agree with you, I just cant take those people who are boastful of themselves, bragging all the time, I’m not sure they’re really over confidence or they really think they’re really good. Whatever it’s I agree that we always have to be humble, I think you’ll gain more respects if praises is due than being self-praise of yourself. There’ll always be someone better than you in life and of course there’ll also be people worst than you in life. We dont have to run down on others to make ourselves feel good….

      2. HeTieShou & Bloom:

I agree with you two 100% – well said.

  13. Don’t know why, but I feel like the next thing she will do is get a western boyfriend and use him to get international fame.

    1. Don’t think it would work. Americans don’t care who you are dating if they don’t know who you are. Kinda like George Clooney’s past girlfriends, who are forever stuck with the title of being “oh that girl.”
China netizens on the other hand seems to rally up and bash you to oblivion if you date a westerner, like Zhang Zi Yi who it still stuck with the “slut” title.
She is already famous and popular in China, why would she risk that.
Best thing for her to do is to be buddies with producers and fashion sponsors.

    2. She mentioned that she already has a boyfriend but will not reveal his identity.

    3. is she dating the handsome guy aarif rahman? or its li bingbing? aarif rahman is a very handsome hot guy and have quality

    4. She’s already rich and famous on her own with L’Oreal and other brand name endorsements. Plus, she’s a regular topic on Red Carpet Fashion Awards.

      1. I noticed that Fan Bing Bing is a regular topic on Red Carpet Fashion. She was even in the Privee lipstick ad with Frieda, Julianna, Eva, and Doutzen. But as you may have guess they just made her sit there and fake smile, while the rest said a line.
I feel like she is not an actress yet, if that make sense. She just kind of used China’s growing influence in the film market and her loreal endorsements to get a role.

      2. She’s the queen of red carpets. Fashion Police have commented about her and did say (quite funny) that if she married Steven Bing her name would have been Bing Bing Bing. Ever thought how come no one asked Zhang Ziyi for such roles? Because Fan Bing Bing is queen of endorsements. Not acting but image only. Sorry but I don’t feel anything for her success in the west.

      3. She HAS won best acting awards at the the Golden Horse and Tokyo Film Festivals. It’s also Hollywood that’s using Chinese stars to gain bigger footholds in the China market.

  14. Night elf bingeing is much better than the two poisonous japanese in wolverine but perhaps not as charismatic as viper.

  15. I wonder how much screen time she gets in the movie since she’s a small support role.

  16. Just watched the movie. Enjoyed it very much. And Fan Bing Bing truly lived up to her character’s name; blink and you will miss her. But her effects are cool. Frankly she has no more role than Halle Berry does. But Halle Berry doesn’t come out to represent entire one nation and words like stepping up the game, etc when ANYONE could have played her role.

    1. I read in wikipedia that Fan Bing Bing has signed up for 5 X-Men movies. So, her character is not over yet. Maybe she will bigger role to play in subsequent installment.

  17. Soooooooo much hype for a small role! But gotta admit, she knows how to stand out from the rest of Chinese celebs into hollywood.
