Jane Zhang Releases “One Woman” Single for UN Women

In order to celebrate International Women’s Day on March 8, 2013, the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women, also known as UN Women, released a charity single. Entitled “One Woman,” the song brought together 25 artists from around the world. Well-known female vocalist, Jane Zhang (張靚穎), represented mainland China.

Jane became popular in 2005 when she participated in Super Girls <超級女聲>, a national singing competition, where she wowed judges and the audience with her phenomenal singing and whistle register. During the competition, she sang in several foreign languages, including English. Since then, she has gone on to release many albums and EPs, found her own artist management label, and participate in humanitarian relief efforts.

Jane’s vocal abilities, English skills, and enthusiasm for charity work made her the ideal candidate to represent mainland China in “One Woman.” During her discussion with UN Women, Jane expressed that gender equality is easily overlooked in everyday life and that, as a woman, she is willing to put forth effort to promote it.

Although she was rehearsing for her performance in the annual CCTV Spring Festival Gala when the recording for “One Woman” began, Jane allocated time to participate in this song. The song’s lyricist, Beth Blatt, was extremely impressed by Jane’s performance and praised her for being a particularly perceptive singer. Blatt also said that Jane’s voice was a perfect interpretation of the song’s message, which was to allow more people to learn of UN Women’s work and to encourage them to join in advocating gender equality.

The lyrics of “One Woman” were inspired by the stories of women all over the world who have received the support of UN Women, which was founded in 2011. The song was co-written by Fahan Hassan, a British/Somali singer-songwriter, and Graham Lyle, a Scottish songwriter who has worked with artists like Michael Jackson and Tina Turner. The production was done by Blatt and the Grammy Award-winning producer Jerry Boys.
