7 Superstars with Humble Educational Backgrounds

1. Zanilia Zhao (赵丽颖)

Born in a rural village located in Langfeng, Hebei Province, Zanilia did not come from a wealthy family background. After graduating from a secondary professional training school, Zanilia’s career started after winning in a talent search hosted by Yahoo! in 2006. It’s been a hard yet steady climb since then, and Zanilia worked her way up. She was launched to mainstream popularity following 2015’s The Journey of Flower <花千骨> and now, Zanilia is going nowhere else but up. As one of China’s highest-paying actresses, Zanilia’s rags to riches story is envied by many.

2. Kris Wu (吴亦凡)

The former EXO member moved around when he was younger. Born in Guangzhou, Kris followed his mother to Hangzhou after his parents separated. He moved back and forth between Vancouver, Canada and Guangzhou in his teenage years, and in 2008, he moved to Seoul, South Korea to start his training career with S.M. Entertainment. It was an uphill climb for Kris ever since debuting with EXO in 2012.

3. Stephen Chow (周星馳)

A household name across Asia, Stephen Chow never kept his low educational background a secret. The Hong Kong filmmaker never went to college, and he entered the workforce early to make ends meet. Stephen had a successful TVB career prior to his transition to film. His witty mind and clever jokes has made him China’s king of comedy.

4. Wallace Chung (鍾漢良)

To provide for his family, Wallace immediately auditioned for TVB after his high school graduation. It was a tumultuous start for Wallace—after several years of insignificant TVB performances, Wallace left for Taiwan and managed a successful singing debut. His debut in China as an actor was even more successful, and Wallace’s popularity only gained from there.

5. Chow Yun-fat (周潤發)

Arguably one of the most successful and legendary actors to come out from Hong Kong, Chow Yun-fat is also known as the industry’s kindest superstar. Chow Yun-fat’s personality is just as humble as his family background—he did not come from a wealthy household, and he entered the workforce as early as middle school to provide for his family.

6. Huo Siyan (霍思燕)

Chinese actress Huo Siyan is living the perfect life. Wife to a happy husband and mother to a healthy son, Huo Siyan enjoys sharing tidbits of her life to her fans on social media. She entered the industry when she was still in middle school, when she was scouted by a director. Though she continued her education into high school, she opted to leave college to pursue full time as an entertainer.

7. Jackie Chan (成龍)

Jackie Chan has become one of our generation’s most recognizable faces in the cinematic world, and he is a key contributor in pushing Hong Kong’s action comedy genre to international levels of fame. He has received stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and Hong Kong’s Avenue of Stars, and in 2016, Jackie Chan was awarded the honorary Oscar for his “extraordinary achievements”. Jackie never graduated from primary school.

    1. @terrycrews19 lol that’s my thought, too! If he can go overseas, his family is not poor.

Though the article’s title is humble education, that means Kris Wu sucks at school when he shouldn’t be. Unlike Jackie, or Stephen, who could not afford the education!

      1. @littlefish

Totally! 🙂 Fans who read this. and do not know true situations/demographics living abroad will think AWwww Kris, poor dude.
It’s not that easy to come into Vancouver – because many of the wealthy rich China investors have spoiled the market. It used to be only $200K in the 80s … now it’s more like $2 million.
Another route would be to marry in (the market is full of dysfunctional Asian men who will sponsor China brides. Some work out, some end up in embittered divorce cases).

        He’s not poor.
His mom BOUGHT a HOUSE in Vancouver (exy real estate city), she didn’t live on Welfare or rent. If anyone knows real estate in Vancouver = it’s akin to HK and Singapore real estate prices aka HIGH! II The real low income immigrant – are those in Downtown Eastside or the burbs. And they live in govt subsidized housing and use Food Banks and legal aid (they cannot afford lawyers).

Went to Churchill High – which is in Westside Vancouver – exyier real estate. Churchill is also fairly academic (ie many Churchill grads there would make it to good Cdn universities, Ivy League including local ones, and great programs at that )

To profile a typical Churchill public school grad.
So yes he’s one of the rolling stones
        academically, who gathered no moss.

Most stars are not rich. That’s WHY they hope to hit big money. Or can be wannabe (in the case of some female ones who would even be mistresses). In that list would be Aaron Kwok Andy Lau etc … all of whom have done their stints as waiters.

      2. @nomad822 lol at the wealthy China investors spoiling the market. Have you forgotten how the wave of HONG KONG immigrants who parked their money into the real estate market in the 80s to 90s? THEY were the ones who drove up the real estate prices in Vancouver in the 80s. The reason I know is because there isn’t a single day I go by without another Asian reminding me its THEIR parents who built Vancouver to what it is today.

      3. @jayj hk might start one in Vancouver, however, the real estate crisis we have currently at most western capital/main cities are because of Chinese investors! Who buy house then left it vacant!
