Starring Wu Jing (吳京), Andy Lau (劉德華) and Li Xuejian (李雪健), sci-fi adventure flick The Wandering Earth 2 <流浪地球 2> held its press conference on November 11, and announced its upcoming premier in theaters on January 22, 2023, the first day of the Lunar New Year.
Sharing his excitement when he learnt he would be involved in the sequel to the 2019 sci-fi epic, Andy also spoke about the physical challenges of filming as he had to don a 35kg spacesuit costume and a 50kg scuba suit. He said, “I tried my best to avoid hurting my wait while filming, putting on the suit makes it difficult to turn around or even twist (my body), I thought about how to make myself more comfortable… The most unbearable part is I have no way to scratch where it itches, I stuck duct tape on the inside of my helmet, so I could relieve the urges by rubbing my face against the tape,”
Besides the physical burden of his outfits, Andy had to put on thousand-degree myopic glasses in the show, which meant he could hardly see and had to feel his way around using his hands. Despite the challenges, Andy very thoughtfully took care of veteran co-star Li Xuejian on set; the filming atmosphere was also convivial and felt like a gathering of old friends whenever the actors gathered backstage.
The Frant Gwo (郭帆) blockbuster is based on a well-known 2000 novel of the same name by Liu Cixin (劉慈欣), who is also producer.
