Arthur Chen, Son of Filmmaker Chen Kaige, Breaks Big with “Ever Night”

Ever Night <将夜>, a television drama adapted from the fantasy novel of the same name, premiered on October 31 to astounding success, breaking 170 million views. It is a fantastic debut for a television drama, and the drama is expected to break records in the days to come.

The fantasy drama stars 18-year-old Arthur Chen (陈飞宇), son of filmmaker Chen Kaige (陈凯歌), in the lead role Ning Que, the last surviving member of a small-time army unit that arrives in Du City to seek revenge. He brings along his maid and close relative Sang Sang (portrayed by Song Yiren 宋伊人), the reincarnation of a powerful being.

Ever Night is Arthur’s first television drama. He made his acting debut in 2010, when he was only 10 years old, in his father’s film Sacrifice <赵氏孤儿>. He made his comeback in the 2017 coming-of-age film Secret Fruit <秘果>, in which he costarred Nana Ou-yang (歐陽娜娜), niece of Taiwanese pop legend Feifei Ou-yang (歐陽菲菲).

Good-looking, young, and a talented newcomer, Arthur is well on the rise to become China’s next biggest “little fresh meat”—Chinese slang for handsome young males. Netizens have compared Arthur popular singer-actor Kris Wu (吴亦凡), who is known for having a “cool but youthful” image.

Ever Night’s viewership success is not a total surprise, when one considers the large supporting cast. The drama costars veteran actor Hu Jun (胡军), who plays the main villain Xia Hou. It also stars industry giants Adam Cheng (鄭少秋) and Leon Lai (黎明) in supporting roles. Chin Shih-chieh (金士傑) and Dylan Kuo (郭品超) also make appearances.
