Coffee Lam Becomes Second Hong Kong Artiste to Have 1 Million YouTube Subscribers

After leaving TVB, Coffee Lam (林芊妤) went on to pursue her yoga instructor license before becoming a fitness guru on YouTube. In less than five years, she has successfully become the second Hong Kong artiste to have over a million YouTube subscribers – the first being singer G.E.M. (鄧紫棋).

Although G.E.M. reached over a million subscribers in 2018 and has more than 2.24 million to date, it’s still impressive that Coffee was able to amass this many subscribers under five years. However, Coffee believes she could have unlocked this achievement sooner if she hadn’t gotten pregnant.

In an interview, the mother of one expressed, “Toward the end of my pregnancy, I could only post three videos a month, whereas I used to post a video per week. During that time, I also posted a lot of videos related to pregnancy, so it minimized my audience.”

However, she added, “I am not too focused on numbers. My own goal is beyond a million because I am most happy to have such supportive friends. I will face this with modesty.”

She Can Be Herself on YouTube

While most YouTubers prefer to film videos in English to attract a larger audience, Coffee is adamant about filming her videos in Cantonese and adding English subtitles. She said, “A lot of people told me to stop filming in Cantonese because it reduces my market. They think I should either speak in Mandarin or English, but I choose to speak in Cantonese because I am from Hong Kong, and it is my mother tongue. A lot of people are actually learning Cantonese from my videos, which makes me really happy.”

Many of her viewers believe that YouTube has given Coffee a chance to reveal the best version of herself in a way that TVB did not. She agreed that changing careers was the best move for her. Coffee shared, “If [TVB] didn’t end my contract, I would have still been lost and scared to move on. Because of TVB’s decision, my personality completely changed. Someone used to dictate my path, but after leaving, I can create my own choices and have my own voice.”

By putting her true self on YouTube, Coffee managed to win over a million subscribers. It’s a huge feat that’s surely worth recognizing. To put it into perspective, Eason Chan (陳奕迅) has over 170,000 followers while Hins Cheung (張敬軒) and former Miss Hong Kong finalist Kayan Choi (蔡嘉欣) both have around 130,000 followers.

  1. Impressive indeed! In her case, good thing TVB got rid of her or she would have still be in that comfort zone w/a support role salary.

  2. I don’t watch her on youtube, but her figure looks great. I’m going to try some of her workouts!

But when I think of Youtube + Coffee, I remember that scandalous video of her in the bathroom lol.
