Dicky Cheung’s Mother Survives Drowning Incident

Dicky Cheung’s (張衛健) mother, 75-year-old Yu Ka Bik (余嘉碧), was rushed to the hospital late Friday afternoon. Sources say that the mother of three sons passed out after nearly drowning in the swimming pool of Tsim Sha Tsui’s InterContinental Hong Kong. She is currently in the Intensive Care Unit at Queen Elizabeth Hospital. Although her heart had stopped beating twice, Mrs. Cheung situation has stabilized.

On Friday night, Dicky’s former manager and now-estranged younger brother, Henry Cheung (張衞彝), went to the hospital to visit his mother with family friend Andy Hui (許志安). The pair left around 9 p.m.

An hour later, Dicky and his wife Jess Zhang (張茜) arrived from a direct flight from Hangzhou, China.  The couple, along with Dicky’s younger brother Lawrence Cheung (張衞基), stayed with their unconscious mother until midnight. The trio went to a restaurant in Jordan for a midnight snack, and left for home 45 minutes later.

Dicky and Henry have been estranged for over five years, which was made known to the public in April when Henry spoke out against Dicky for withholding his managerial and commission fees which amount to over $20 million HKD. Dicky reacted by issuing a press statement, initiated by his mother, to clarify the matter, and to urge his prodigal brother to “turn back.”

Dicky went to see his mother again on Saturday night. It was reported that Henry was also present during the  visit.

Dicky Reveals Mother’s Current State

The actor-singer thanked the press for their concerns and revealed that his mother’s condition is improving. Dicky said, “[We] thought she would stay in a coma for the next few days, but she’s doing better now. She reacts to me when I talk to her, and her eyes are slightly opened. I hope she will continue to work hard. I can feel that she is working hard to give us a reaction. Once again, thank you for all your concerns. Don’t worry! I hope to bring good news to everyone soon.”

Dicky disclosed that he has arranged a priest for the anointing of his oil, blessing her for comfort and courage. “My mother is Catholic, as our entire family is, which is why I arranged for a priest for an anointing service. It is a simple blessing ceremony. Any Catholic, who has passed 60 years of age, healthy or not, can receive this blessing every year.

“The ceremony is to bless my mother, to pray for God to help my mother find courage and restore her health. If there will be a second arrangement, and my mother is to leave us, I do want God to bring her to His side.” Dicky also thanked his friends and colleagues, saying, “Don’t worry. Our family is strong. I thank you with all my heart.”

Despite the near fatal incident, Dicky believes that his mother will go swimming once again, “Our personalities are similar. I believe she will say: ‘Son, where you fall down, you must get up in the same spot.'” Dicky declined to comment on whether they will be suing the hotel for his mother’s drowning incident.
