Growing Up Poor, Priscilla Wong’s Needs in Life are Simple

Since joining TVB, Priscilla Wong (黃翠如) has enjoyed a smooth sailing. Although outwardly a happy-go-lucky person, Priscilla revealed that she grew up in poverty. While her father worked as a fishmonger, her mother took care of the household and children. Being a traditional Chaozhou man, her father always wanted to have a son. To his dismay, all five children were girls.

Referring to her mother as a brilliant caretaker, Priscilla has no intentions of being a housewife. “In reality, I have not thought about when I want to be a housewife. Planning is not as practical as letting nature run its course. Even though I am not as giving as a housewife, I do enjoy the thrift shopping. For two dollars, I would walk to three different grocery stores. My mother is even more impressive because she will go to all the grocery stores to compare prices. She’s a super housewife!”

Since her parents raised the family under tight financial circumstances, Priscilla was never given an allowance. To alleviate her parents and support herself, she earned income through tutoring jobs. Known for her simple-mindedness and frugality, Priscilla said, “Although I won’t buy clothes, I spend a lot on traveling and food. Especially when eating with my family, I don’t mind paying for the bill. I don’t have a concept of money. I never ask for my remuneration amount nor do I check to see how much I have in the bank. As long as I have enough money to pay for family expenses and have food on the table, then it is enough.”

Enraptured by Edwin’s Positive Energy

Falling in love with Edwin Siu (蕭正楠) after Madam Cutie on Duty (師奶Madam) , Priscilla said “During filming, other than his character in the role, I knew nothing about him. It was only after filming when we spent more time together that I cultivated feelings for him. I like that he is a positive and happy person. A simple gag joke can make him laugh nonstop. We are very alike in some ways.”

When their relationship became public, Priscilla was deemed as the third party in Edwin and Gigi Ho’s (何傲芝) relationship. Priscilla admitted that she felt a lot of pressure. “At the time, I was very depressed. My love life became headline news and I was bombarded with questions by the media every day. Even when I had no noodles left at home, I couldn’t go out to buy any. I was unhappy, but I couldn’t complain. I can only accept it.

“I personally have bad memory, so I quickly forgot about these unhappy things. The people around me love me and after their consolation, I would smile again. Being forgetful and having no personality is my most positive trait. In my life, there are more happy things than unhappy things. Life is simple because being happy is the biggest happiness.”

  1. #PriscillaWong sounds like a very modest person. I can relate to her story because I also grew up in a family where finances were very tight. Money didn’t come easily and to this day, I have conflicted views towards money.

I also like her attitude in life: “Life is simple because being happy is the biggest happiness.”

  2. Yes, she do seems like a very modest and thrifty person. I noticed her when she was doing travelogue, she went to Italy or other countries, I can’t remember, and she just can’t bear to buy branded stuff, even though it was on sale. She went with Tony. Edwin is a very lucky guy!!!!

  3. Good. Which means she is a careful modest thrifty person. BUT most actors grew up poor or very poor. Many people too but fame and money and a sense of self importance will change a person, especially actors who gets to be idols to many, first class in everything, treated as new royalty so I hope she doesn’t change but I doubt it. People change, the thing is how much is seen changed is another question.

  4. She sounded sweet and modest. I hope she will stay that way … she and Edwin make such an adorable couple.

  5. I always like her, reading this made me like her even more. Hope it’s all happy ending for her and Edwin Siu.

  6. She is sweet and very modest! Hope she stay the same! I like her! Hope she n Edwin stay happy together.

  7. She’s not the best at acting, but because she remains level headed and very humble, it makes her so very likeable and she doesn’t have a celebrity attitude about her.

  8. I remember when I first saw her on reality check and hated her. I thought her voice was squeaky and hated her karma rider. Now I really like her, she’s improved so much and has become more confident on screen. Anyways, I started a blog about Asian entertainment ceejays-entertainment.blogspot.com
