Hilary Chong Learns to Appreciate Her Loved Ones

Caring for her father’s unexpected health crisis, 22-year-old Miss Hong Kong pageant winner Hilary Chong (莊子璇) recently posted a black-and-white photo on her Instagram as she reflected on the fragility of life.
Resuscitated from Heart-stopping Moments
Revealing that she almost lost her dad to illness, Hilary wrote, “Did you know, life is very fragile, in the face of death, humans are really small. In the past year, one after another those around me have left, I really thought I was going to leave you as well. Luckily, heavens gave us one more chance, this was a lesson to learn to appreciate those around us, alright, daddy?”
Attending a promotional event for TVB’s Pok Oi Charity Show <博愛歡樂傳萬家> on March 8, Hilary spoke about her dad’s medical situation. “He was actually going for a scheduled angioplasty at the hospital, and I thought it was really small surgery, but that night he suddenly his heart stopped and they had to resuscitate him for over 2 minutes, and the doctor told us it’s taken so long and we must be mentally prepared,”
Hilary shared that she was not so hopeful but thankfully, a week after her dad’s ICU admission, he made a miraculous recovery. Although he is a little disoriented after the medication, the situation could be far worse and she is glad that he is generally stable and would not have too many complications.
Primary Decision-maker for Dad’s Health
Recognizing the impact of her dad’s sudden health crisis on the entire family, Hilary reflected, “Coming so close to death made me realize these are all the highs and lows of life, and made me appreciate the people around me more,” With the constant trips to the hospital, Hilary shared that the worrying made her experience “more fear, rather than fatigue”. Asked if this affected her work, the actress revealed that while she stayed at the hospital by her dad’s side during his most critical phase, she was able to handle her job commitments and return once after his situation improved.
As Hilary’s elder brother was overseas, she had to be the key decision-maker for her father, which she admitted was “a huge stress on her”. Nevertheless, Hilary counts her blessings that her dad’s situation has improved, though the reason for his sudden decline is still unclear. A traditional man, Hilary’s dad was not someone who would express his affection openly, but played the role of a supportive force behind the family. “I wouldn’t know what to do if he leaves,” she said.
