Kevin Cheng Hopes to Work With Wayne Lai and Myolie Wu in His First Production
Kevin Cheng (郑嘉颖) may be busy with filming Chinese drama, Hua Xu Yin <华胥引之绝爱之城> but his mind is never far from his production company. He hopes to be able to gather his good friends such as Kenneth Ma (马国明), Myolie Wu (胡杏儿) and Cecilia Liu (刘诗诗) to star in a drama released by his production studio.
Kevin found fame in China since starring as the eighth prince in Bu Bu Jing Xin <步步惊心> in 2011. Kevin’s filming schedule in China has been non-stop, appearing in dramas Mystery in the Palace <深宫谍影>, Hero <英雄>, Love and Passion <万水千山风雨情>, Rush of Red Dust <滚滚红尘>, Ip Man <叶问> and the upcoming Hua Xu Yin. With an increase in endorsement deals, Kevin’s remuneration leaped in bounds within a short time. In the 2013 Forbes China Celebrity 100 list, he was ranked number 48 and was the top earning TVB artist. Kevin said,” Of course, I’m happy to be on the list as it’s a form of recognition. I’m glad that I can be one of the representatives for the television industry. But I have no idea who is ranked below me. In fact, I have no idea how much I earn this year too. I just hope to improve every year and hopefully, I’ll even get into the top 30 next year!”
Working with Good Friends
Currently, Kevin is enjoying his role as the romantic and talented Mo Yan in Hua Xu Yin. His character, being the central figure that strings four other mini stories together, calls for several image changes. Despite missing the opportunity to film for Bu Bu Jing Qing <步步惊情> because of scheduling conflicts, Kevin relishes the challenges he encounters while filming the fantasy drama
After completing Hua Xu Yin in June, Kevin will start work in his television production company’s first drama. Already setting aside a large budget, Kevin is still sourcing for a good scriptwriter. He also hopes to make use of this opportunity to work with a few of his friends. Kevin said, “I have always admired Wayne Lai (黎耀祥) but never really had the chance to work closely with him. I also enjoyed the rapport Kenneth and I had in A Fistful of Stances <铁马寻桥>. As for Myolie and Cecilia, we have shared good chemistry so it would be fun to work with them again.”
Meanwhile, Kevin also hopes to be able to return to Hong Kong to record a few songs for his new album. With several projects lined up, Kevin will not be able to film another drama with TVB until 2014.
Kevin has been able to share the fruits of his labor with his family. He purchased properties for his mother in Hong Kong and his sister in the United States. Though Kevin’s own residence is only an apartment of several hundred square feet, he hopes to be able to live in a bigger house in Hong Kong Island when he has his own family.

New production companies have less room for error (due to modest budget) and will make safer decisions (with casting, staging, costume, etc.).

Wayne Lai was a ‘kelafe’ for a long time at tvb and got his big break in RB-1. Actors in Wayne’s age group is not that many at tvb and coupled with his own hard work has helped pushed his image forward. Naturally RB-1 and RB-2 were very good scripts and I’m sure if other actors were selected, they would have done just as good a job. Damian Lau is one such person who can give WL a run for his money

Not true. He was already considered 2nd lead way back long long time ago, his big break was Journey To The West then he went down and then another huge break in Safe Guards and then leading guy in another series before Rosy Business. he has always been there, just not many will know his name, much like Koo Ming Wah.
Damien Lau and Wayne are both of very different category.

Why is it that all of a sudden everyone wants to work with Wayne Lai? I’ve never heard of such thing when Wayne was not popular.
Wayne Lai may be interested in entering the mainland market and happens to be suitable for a role (and the team)?

@Michelle: Me neither. Before Wayne became famous due to RB1 in mid 2009, I seldom read of his fellow colleagues praising his acting let alone rushing to work with him.
People may have said they wanted to work with Wayne in the past but it wasn’t news worthy so never got published …

No, if a popular artist said that he/she wants to work with Wayne, it would have been published b/c that artist is popular. But I’ve never heard such thing. Now that Wayne is popular, many people want to work with him.
After June Kevin can, at last, turn his thoughts to other than acting and his next project, his production of his first series. I feel that he had always been pretty close to them and of course, admired their acting abilities. I wonder why Charmaine has been left out. Would that cause too much speculation? Liu Shi Shi seems special to him, somehow I just feel it but again, Myolie. She’s close to him too! Well, whatever, I hope his first production will be a success.
