Linda Chung to Sing Theme Song for “The Empress of China”

Linda Chung‘s (鍾嘉欣) lack of screen presence this year prompted rumors that she has lost favor. However, her status within the company was affirmed when Linda was chosen to sing the theme song to popular drama The Empress of China <武則天>.

Although it was rumored that TVB will invite Joey Yung (容祖兒) to sing the main theme song, Voice Entertainment CEO, Herman Ho (何哲圖), recently put a rest to the rumors when he announced that Linda will instead lend her vocals for the Cantonese theme song. Linda denied that she has been neglected by Voice Entertainment, “I have already finished recording four songs. Hopefully the album will be completed for release at the end of the year, because I will be going to Mainland China to film a new series. Then I will return to Hong Kong to film another drama.”

In regards to being frozen by TVB, Linda laughed, “The company doesn’t have a freezer, but they do have an air conditioner. Actually, there’s no need to compare. The company having a lot of talented people is a good thing. I trust Herman a lot. If my voice is unsuitable for the song and I’m pushed to sing the song, then everyone will think it sounds bad.”

With newcomer Jinny Ng (吳若希) rising quickly after winning the 2014 Jade Solid Gold Song of the Year award, Jinny will be singing the ending theme song for The Empress of China. In response to being Herman’s new favorite artiste, Jinny said, “He dotes on everyone and will recommend everyone for song recordings. There’s no need to respond to these types of senseless rumors.”

  1. Huh? Didn’t Joey and Jinny sing theme/sub-theme songs already? The songs have already been released.

    1. @miriamfanz Very confusing isn’t it because isn’t that Joey singing themesong???? Sub song say sub song lar. Maybe there is another sub song since that series is long and probably lots of songs anyway.

By the way kudos to TVB for the smart covering up. I am truly very impressed and I am not being sarcastic here.

  2. I am pretty sure this is a sub theme. They already released joey’s song and it looked like the theme song. It was like a minute clip and everything.

And no offense to linda but if this drama already has so much anticipation and it was so popular in china, it makes no sense why they would not use joey as the theme song. Joey is much more famous than linda and it would be a waste to not use her as the theme.

  3. I just watched 5 min of the new series with Linda in it and I kept wondering what made her into such a god awful actress? What happened? Did she suffer some trauma or something?

    1. @funnlim Linda was freaking funny in episode 1. Not sure what u were watching! She was great. she’s not awful. She did a fantastic job!

      1. Saw episode 1 , linda match with Alex fung, she look like his mother, she look so old

      1. @miriamfanz I saw that scene where she was screaming at the newly weds? Decent is hardly the word but since she has been terrible I guess anything is an upgrade. I wish I know what’s wrong with Linda. It seems like she is just out of it.

      2. @funnlim I get what you mean with that scene, it’s way better than her yelling performance in TC2 though but that honestly isn’t saying much. For some odd reason she can’t seem to summon enough breath to yell/scream effectively so it looked like she was just a drunk troublemaker mocking the couple rather than someone who was trying to vent her frustration because of her past. Perhaps that was the intention? But I didn’t feel like that was what she was suppose to act out. *shrug*

      3. @sodi Drunk huh? Suspected so but didn;t look drunk at all. Not just can’t summon enough breath but like she is holding it in and yet can’t quite genuinely release it. Even breathing seems so difficult for her to act out. I don’t know what’s wrong with her. Has she lost her passion for acting? Or does she care too much that it hinders her?

I read many find her funny in here, I find her funny too but not in a good way. If Alex Fong is a better actor in any particular scene, you’re doomed.

      4. @funnlim hmm but even Liza Wang praised Linda that she reallly broke through her image in this role. I feel she ISNT holding back and sometimes it can look overacting but thats normal for comedies. You shouldnt be so critical on everything and just enjoy the drama. How is breathing supposed to be acted out? You just breath o.o if she had to think about how to breath just to breath , then that would be horrible.

      5. @funnlim After the utter, utter disaster of Tiger Cubs, I’d take anything better than cringeworthy. Maybe she’s doing better cause the veterans are holding her up here.

    2. @funnlim indeed, her acting style is very different than before,i never seen linda act like this.it looks good, this drama could be bring her the tv queen title this year.

  4. I think Linda is doing awesome! I watched the episode 1 like 5 times and each time her character makes me laugh.

    1. Linda is doing ok in this series I Like eps 1 kinda of funny on how she yelled at the couple getting married I too keep rewinding it back to that scene cant get enough of it ^^

    1. @ freedalas

If you dont like here then why are you wasting time here reading what media has to say about her nobody wants to see your disrepecting comment about her

      1. @winniec I have watched Ep. 1 of “Limelight Years”. Agree that Linda Chung acts differently, but her acting is a bit over-exaggerated. She does not show much pain when she yells, she looks more drunk than sad. But it is a good sign to see her doing something else. We should watch more episodes before we make a fair comment.

  6. I’m really enjoying watching The Empress of China regardless of who sings the theme song. There’s only 3 episode out so far and so much has happened already, I’m totally hooked! If only I could understood Mandarin, I would totally watch that version since all the episodes are out, I don’t have to wait for the next episode hahaha!
Also, I can’t get over how insanely beautiful the set and costumes are, and as someone who is studying and wanting to go into TV production, I admire the time and effort the editors have had to give into doing all the CGI on the costumes, they made the extra piece of fabric look so natural!
I’m super excited for the rest of the episodes xD

    1. @melodylai I don’t know if it was because of the CGI on the costumes, or even the whole drama series, I found that the photography of this drama series was too bright (too white to me). It could be due to the poor uploading of the series to TVPad. Does anyone feel the same on their TV?

    2. @melodylai Opposite for me. The first few episodes already foreshadows the same palace drama to come for the first half the series. Mary Sue aka Wu Zetian is innocent, headstrong, and cute before being stomped on like a doormat for 40-50 episodes. In between you can throw in your mix of abortions/baby killing, forbidden love and long stares at each other, dressing up in warrior and eunuch clothing, people performing inhumane feats and killing a dozen guys with a swipe or flipping around on their horses etc. In all honesty though, new group of actors, new dynasty with slight historic variation due to time period but another rehash of plot is what it’s currently shaping up to be.

I ain’t letting the “new and shiny” thing fool me just yet!

@orchid123 It’s definitely bright but I’ve seen enough of it that I think it’s a staple lighting technique they use enough of. Kind of like how TVB does lighting for their shows.

      1. @sodi I don’t think she is Mary Sue. After all she is only 14 and not exceedingly bright as in saying whatever she wants since she is raised that way so she will learn to be more tactful. But Mary Sue? No, she is not. Quite cunning, not that innocent and being 14, rather cute. Don;t forget she is up against those who are at least 20 years older.

The rest of the elements is atypical because every palace intrigue drama is like that unless it is TVB which doesn’t have all that. So far I am liking what I am watching and I appreciate the effort to cover up the boobies in a way that is not too obvious, i rather like the costumes that way but the hair is the problem.

As for being too bright, they have to because we have a 30 plus year old playing 14, thick make up bright lightning etc is a must. Fan Bing Bing looks so unreal, she is to me the problem.

By the way I wonder what’s the difference between TVB ver and Mainland China cut version apart from boobies proofed in an inoffensive way. I still find it too slow for my lacking, considering there is a loooooooong way to go. I am however appreciating the fact that the actor playing Li Shimin will be given ample time to leave a deep impression and that actor is regal and impressive. Chen Daoming is better but he may be more expensive so I will accept this equally great actor.

      2. @funnlim Zhang FengYi is pretty much a top-notch actor in China. He did a lot of Chen Kaige movies back in the 90’s. Though I do enjoy his performance, his Li Shi Min will last for 2/3 of the series which I find the story pace too draggy at first and then too rushed near the end.

      3. @elizabeth I get what you mean. If he doesn’t die the story doesn’t move. Since tvb will probably cut the scenes I hope he doesn’t die too soon but wont be draggy.

      4. @funnlim The series covers the whole life of Wu ZeTian but when it bases 60 EPs on the ten years of her life then squashes the remaining 60 years of her life and achievements into the last 30+ EPs, she does come along as a white lotus Mary sue. I’m not too sure what the film wants us to think about Wu ze Tian in the last ep. The characterization is very weak. Li shi min is one of the better characters.

      5. @funnlim Are we talking about 14 in modern terms or 14 in Tang dynasty terms? Because at her current age, she’s actually way ahead of her peers already to the point she can hold official office and quite ambitious rather than what she’s been currently portrayed as. Rough around the edges, yes, but not to the point where I have to question she doesn’t understand the rules of the game. They’ve also taken great liberities to tone down the importance of her family and her own personality / education level which looks to me like they’re setting things up for a lot of misery to come. To be fair though, I’ll give it a bit more time but honestly looks like idealized version incoming to gain sympathy for her later actions to come.

What TVB said was that they did an edit themselves then they were passed the mainland edited version.

        Here’s a link: http://www.ihktv.com/wu-ze-tian-shou-shi.html

Near the end: Tsang Sing Ming (曾醒明) pleaded for grievance: “This was set by General Administration of Press and Publication, TVB and overseas had to broadcast the version with additional clothing using special effects as it was perceived more natural. They then gave us the original version with added work and it was not added by TVB itself.”

If you stare enough it looks a bit fake but it’s passable if you don’t focus on that area and compare it to the clothing. The other main difference I remember is a lot of the shots are zoomed in above chest level and more of a focus on the face. It got so ridiculous in China that people started mocking it by doing their own zoom-ins and censorship on social media.

Cleavage issue is probably getting more discussion than the series itself.

      6. @sodi I really do.think tvb did a fantastic job at covering up and the fact they bothered to match the costume colour. Its the level of attention to details. As for the story frankly this is idol drama. I suppose the roper version should be cctv version.
