Lisa Tse Wins 2020 Miss Hong Kong Title

25-year-old Lisa Tse (謝嘉怡) from Scotland secured the Miss Hong Kong title last night, followed by 23-year-old Celina Harto (陳楨怡) as runner-up and 22-year-old Rosita Kwok (郭柏妍) as second runner-up. Lisa also won Miss Friendship, earning the title “double crown.”

Hosted by Carol Cheng (鄭裕玲), the 2020 Miss Hong Kong Pageant was held on Sunday night at TVB City in Tseung Kwan O. Due to implemented safety measures for COVID-19, the finals were held without a live audience. Social distancing measures were set among celebrity guests who attended, which included prior Miss Hong Kong winners Louisa Mak (麥明詩), Crystal Fung (馮盈盈), Hera Chan (陳曉華), and Sisley Choi (蔡思貝). Last year’s winner, Carmaney Wong (黃嘉雯) opened the show with a ballet performance.

The ten finalists competed in seven rounds of competition to win the title. #8 Lisa Tse, of mixed Chinese and Scottish descent, topped the race. #2 Celina Harto confidently secured second place, and #4 Rosita Kwok—an Internet favorite—won third. Lisa’s winning performance was singing the Frances Yip (葉麗儀) classic “Shanghai Bund” <上海灘>; despite her accent, she delivered a powerful voice. Celina performed a piano solo, and Rosita did a K-pop performance. The youngest finalist at 18 years old—#9 Rosanna Tse (謝恩靈)—played the guzheng.

For the Q&A segment, the ten finalists made their appearance wearing bridal gowns while celebrity singer Pakho Chau (周柏豪) performed. They were drilled by Owen Cheung (張振朗), Mark Ma (馬貫東), and Matthew Ho (何廣沛), in which the contestants had to react and respond quickly to questions.

The final five were Lisa Tse, Celina Harto, Rosita Kwok, #3 Roxanne Ho (何孟珊), and Miss Friendship winner #5 Maisie Kwong (鄺美璇). Rosita, Roxanne, and Maisie all broke down into tears when they were told to give their final speeches—Roxanne thanked her mother for raising her, and Rosita thanked her family for their encouragement. Maisie said being part of the Miss HK Pageant had been her and her sister’s biggest dream since childhood. Four years ago, her older sister had competed for the Miss Hong Kong, but failed to get placed. Lisa jokingly said her dad already had plans for her to compete for Miss HK before she even knew how to walk.

Congratulations to all the winners!

  1. Ouuu I just watched the YouTube highlights. The winner is pretty but very petite, and she walks a little funny? Still better than the past few years imo better looking than Grace Chan. At least she doesn’t have the chopstick figure. Also she won Miss photogenic not miss friendship. Not sure how good she will be in hosting or acting if tvb signs her since her Chinese is pretty bad. Honestly her actual job sounds much more interesting and meaningful. Second place is not pretty her face is rather asymmetrical and so are her eyes. Interesting last name though. I thought that Maisie looked better and would place.

    1. @bubbles23
yes, i was quite surprised that she won when all the other contestants towered over her. pretty face, i think she looks like dirleraba.

    2. @bubbles23 I agree. She is pretty. But yes she will have to improve significantly on her Cantonsese if she wants a career as a actress with TVB.

  2. I think Rosita Kwok would have had a better chance to make it in the HK entertainment industry having a local culture, so I would have preferred to see her win……..The thing with Lisa Tse is that she is pretty much ‘white’ inside, and will take too many years to brush up her Cantonese, if that is even possible………..The days are gone when the likes of Bernice Liu, Eliza Sam and etc. step into TVB, barely speaking a few words of Cantonese, and then take years, to find out that they still can’t speak it properly……..The market for these overseas Chinese is kind of dry these days………..I mean, when Lisa Tse started singing in Cantonese, I almost threw up twice………..And I really mean it too…………

    1. @yuaida doesn’t the winner usually get sidelined to just look pretty and those who are runner ups and get the side awards get the breaks in the industry? (Except for Grace Chan, she seemed to have been boosted forward…)

    2. @yuaida Although Rosita got 2nd runner up, I think she has a better chance to film dramas because she is the prettiest and speaks Canto well.

  3. It’s been a few years since I watched one of these and they are as cheesy as I remember and even more cringeworthy. I might be wrong but didn’t they ask better questions before? Not as superficial? Like none of the questions asked were impactful, it was purely looks and love life. So degrading. Also the constant talk about weight loss… this pageant is not progressive at all.

I think Lisa is definitely the prettiest (not tough competition tho) but I agree with the other comments, Rosita would have been a better choice. Lisa can barely speak Cantonese and didn’t seem like she wanted to be there? Also, can someone explain why the audience was laughing when Lisa was making her final remarks? When she was talking about her father, did she say something funny? Besides her thick accent, I don’t think there was anything funny? Just curious.

    1. I actually read the article and lol competition is an understatement, there was no real competition. Also saying they were drilled with questions by Owen and Matthew…. yeah okay. Lol the whole thing was pretty cringe

    2. @tt23 The audience was laughing because Lisa said along the lines of “even when I was a few months old and I couldn’t even walk my dad wanted me to join the pageant.”

  4. Top 3: 2, 6, and 9.
#2 Celina Harto is actually very attractive and witty. And that bod with height.
#6 Jessica should have won photogenic. She’s pretty even when not mixed and her Q and A was strong. She said she had a white heart because of her pure soul!
#9 Rossana is the most talented–killer guzheng. She’s 18 and a Miss Talent award should’ve been carved out for her.

Lisa is pretty but most of her answers were not correct i.e. doesn’t not know what TVB stands for, Q comes before R not S and English is your primary language young lady, and on top of that, you cannot say she was the one with the best measurements, that’s #2 #6 and #5 Maisie. Note: I had high hopes for #5 but she’s not witty enough.

Rosita could have gotten Miss Friendship since she was so popular on the internet already.

To the judges: it’s actually an insult to ask such easy or insulting questions.

    1. @jesspepperwang Agree that Rosanna’s guzheng performance was amazing! She is young, yet so well-rounded, confident, and talented.

Miss Friendship is voted among the finalists themselves, not by Internet, so the girls voted for Maisie.

  5. Lisa Tse is the prettiness , she is mixed …

She is pretty smart as her occupation is a surgical theatre nurse….

But on a side note, she had a celebrity who nominated her to join miss HK pageant and that is Maria Cordero , this was revealed in a interview after the pageant .

    1. @mulder99 Actually, they mentioned it when she arrived in HK from overseas that 肥妈 nominated her.

They revealed that the other contestant, Casa is her younger cousin after the pageant, which I find surprising!

  6. Lisa is mixed so of course her Cantonese won’t be that good. Based on the picture above Lisa reminds me of Sonija Kwok, the one on the left reminds me of Catherine Chau? And the one on the right reminds me of Vivien Yeo?

      1. @tt23 yes she does looks like the gold digger Mandy I didn’t thought of her now that mentioned it Lisa does looks like her too. I don’t think she looks like Grace but more like Mandy or Sonija.

  7. I was kind of disappointed that Maisie didn’t make top 3, she was tall, pretty, sweet smile and voice, graduated from LSE so has education. Could totally tell her elegance, grace, hei zhu compared to others.

Lisa is very pretty, refreshing with honest anwers, but definitely not worthy of winner, I would say 2nd/3rd. Her cantonese and posture was bad. Many qs she failed to answer. She lacks the class when compared to Maise,
Lisa was very clever, tried to stand out, be different, by singing a chinese song, definitely had the help of her god mother 肥媽. lol lisa was so shocked she won though, even in end she walked super quick haha.

Celina isn’t pretty imo, but tall and I liked her harp performance. Rosita is ok, but her teeth is very goofy, has a bit of a dumb ditzy appearance.

TVB didn’t even try to make it seem like a competition, it was more of a show for entertainment. Asking stupid qs that don’t show intelligence.

  8. I’m kind of disappointed that Lisa won. Sure, she is pretty, perhaps considered ‘exotic’ in HK. Her posture is really poor; she’s slouched all the time. I think she won because of her mixed features and because of her nominator 肥妈 (and perhaps other connections?).

I agree that Maisie has a very sweet smile but her face also looks very assymetrical, especially when she talks.. does anyone else notice this? I also thought her talent portion was a little weak… Grace sang that song for pageant already.. seems a bit repetitive.

  9. I know a lot of people are saying her Cantonese isn’t that great, but in my opinion she’s fantastic because she’s mixed. You can’t compare to Eliza who is pure Chinese yet still can’t speak great Cantonese. I also find Lisa beautiful not like a chopstick figure. I wish her all the best!

  10. I think the winner had a lot of endearing qualities, much as her awkwardness, which made people want to root for her. She was not perfect at all, but I think that’s why she got people to root and vote for her. Also, she is very pretty!
I thought that #6 did really well, especially with her walk, but maybe that type of confidence does not do well with the HK audience?

  11. I think the 18 year old could have been placed higher. Probably not champion standards but she was really good. She was able to dance well, answer questions well and her talent performance playing the guzheng was really unique and impressive for someone as young as her. I felt like she really tried hard and I’m impressed how far she has gone through the competition considering her age. Maybe because of how young she is that was her downfall, perhaps if she had joined at a later part of her life maybe in her 20s it would give her a better chance? (and get braces in the meantime). She seems nice hopefully TVB picks her up as like a teen actress playing someone’s daughter etc.

    1. @oligodendrocytes I agree! She dances well. I also feel like she is mature and able to the elimination process better than most others (see videos for elimination from 15 to 12, for example).
