Max Cheung Shares Acting Experience As A Newbie

Recalling how he had to play a corpse when he was a newbie, Max thanks Tsui Wing for his guidance and care.

In the currently airing PTU 2019 <机动部队2019>, Max Cheung (張達倫) plays a police officer alongside Mat Yeung (楊明) and Alvin Ng (伍富桥).

While Max enjoyed filming for the drama, he sympathized with co-stars Mat and Sisley Choi (蔡思贝) who had to endure smoke grenades and pepper spray. Although Max skipped the smoke grenade, he was affected by its strong hazing effects, and could not film a behind-the-scenes shot for Mat.

Working with new actor Alvin Ng, Max praised him for his conscientious attitude and willingness to learn, adding that he would discuss how to approach certain scenes with the latter.

Asked about whether he too had a senior who guided him when he himself first started acting, Max expressed his gratitude to actor Tsui Wing (徐荣). “There was a scene where I played a corpse, and even had to be cut up during the autopsy. I was upset about having artificial skin covered over me, while the other actors left for supper. Tsui Wing came in and asked if I wanted something to drink.”

Max also revealed that he still keeps in touch with the Come Home Love <愛.回家> cast, “We have a chat group and would talk about everything under the sun when we meet up. My son Zachary also plays with Lai Lok Yi’s (黎诺懿) son ‘Little Spring Chicken’. I hope our friendship can extend to the next generation!”

Sharing about filming PTU 2019, Max said “Aside from a few actors, the rest are all real policemen. We also had the chance to shoot on a real police speedboat. There’s a scene where I had to reprimand the students. I got the policeman to do a demonstration. After that I told the director I would shoot three versions for him to choose: one was where I screamed until I was hoarse; the second was a fierce version; and the final one was the most normal. In the end he picked the fierce version and used the first recording as a no-good take!”

New Basic Contract with TVB

Having changed his contract mode with TVB to a basic contract, Max has to do the liaising for work projects himself, and has recently entered the Mainland Chinese market to take on gigs. Leaving his comfort zone of Hong Kong, he missed his son Zachary the most. “He’s only a few years’ old and at the most playful age. Sometimes when I return for a few days after work, I realize he has already grown up in some ways. I really miss that!”
