Raymond Lam Plans to Leave Entertainment Industry for Family
When Raymond Lam (林峯) lost the TV King title at the 2012 TVB Anniversary Awards, rumors indicating that he was disheartened and thus planned to leave TVB initiated. With heavily anticipated dramas next year such as Beauty at War <金枝慾孽 貳>, Triumph in the Skies 2 <衝上雲霄 II>, Rosy Business 3 <巾幗梟雄III>, and The Hippocratic Crush 2 <On Call 36小時II>, casting other actors, Raymond has even slimmer chances of becoming TV King.
Raymond Lam: “Family is More Important!”
Raymond revealed to the media for the first time that he has plans to leave the entertainment industry eventually. “I have been a little lost in the past, because I didn’t know which direction I wanted to go in. Should I continue down the entertainment road, or take the responsibilities of being the eldest son in the family? Choosing between the industry and my family, my final decision would be my family. This isn’t an impulsive decision. My dad is already in his sixties, and it’s not filial if I don’t return to help him. I can’t spend time with my family if I continue in the entertainment industry. My family is the most important.”
Born the eldest son to wealthy mainland real-estate property developer, Lam Kwok Wah (林國華), Raymond felt it is important to eventually help manage the family business.
When is he planning to retire from the entertainment industry completely? “Not a long time from now. But we really can’t tell time. When I reach the point where there’s no more motivation to go any further, I would choose my family.” Is he afraid that fans will be unhappy? “They love me very much, and they probably hope I would find my goal in life too.”
Is Raymond going to film one drama for TVB per year? “My contract states one drama per year, but I am focusing on music, movies, and dramas at the same time. Music-related work is more flexible, but in terms of dramas, it is really hard to take another job at the same time. Between movies and dramas, I can only choose one. If I have to choose, I’d opt for movies. In recent years, there are chances for me to take part in movies, giving me opportunities to learn. I will also have time to continue with music. As an actor, I believe I can find what I am looking for in movies.”
Declined Filming “Food for the Slaves”
Originally, Raymond was supposed to start filming for new TVB ancient drama, Food for the Slaves <食為奴>, in February next year with Ron Ng (吳卓羲), Wong Cho Lam (王祖藍), and Linda Chung (鍾嘉欣). However, Raymond declined the offer, and admitted that the reason was because he did not want to affect other jobs at hand by having to shave his head for the Qing Dynasty drama. “If I need to shave my head, I can’t attend to other jobs such as filming ads, becoming the spokesperson for certain brands, or music-related work. I can’t just wear a cap every day. In fact, I have a lot of other work from February through May.”
Raymond’s refusal to film for the drama now serves as a headache for TVB. All the other siu sangs already have full work schedules. Bosco Wong (黃宗澤) and Kevin Cheng (鄭嘉穎) will be busy filming in mainland. Moses Chan (陳豪) and Wayne Lai (黎耀祥) are filming The Love Firm <傳愛事務所>. Kenneth Ma (馬國明) will be filming The Hippocratic Crush 2, and Ron Ng is already cast in Food for the Slaves. TVB drama production director, Tommy Leung (梁家樹), expressed that he will talk to Raymond after his holidays and hopes that Raymond can take the role.
Response to Rumors of Being Upset
Not winning any awards, was Raymond actually upset after the TVB Anniversary Awards? “There was disappointment for sure. However, I had to work the next day, so how would a disheartened mood exist? Honestly, I did think about what I would say if I received an award. In the past, I seldom thanked my family. I really wanted to thank each one of my family members this year. Actually, with their support and the support of others around me, everything is okay!”
Asked to respond to rumors that he is not fond of Wayne Lai, Raymond replied, “There is nothing of the sort. I have always wanted to collaborate with Wayne, but sadly there is no chance. He came to support me at my concert, and I will be inviting him to my next concert as well.”
Did Raymond decline filming Food for the Slaves because he is upset with TVB? Raymond expressed that he is too busy with many jobs at hand. Next year, Raymond will be filming two movies, including Saving General Yang <忠烈楊家將>. “I really want to focus on one thing at a time. This has nothing to do with losing the Best Actor award. The rumors emerged only because the results were a little surprising. If I receive the award, people would say that the company is favoring me. If I don’t receive the award, people say that I’m upset. I’d rather have people calling me upset, because at least it’s cooler!”

awww this is quite sad to hear, when he was interviewed in the past saying that he’ll stop show business at the age of 30 but then he continued on, i was beyond ecstatic, he really does have the talent to make it big in the entertainment industry. but i understand that family is more important, though i will certainly miss seeing him in tvb dramas…..

don’t be too simplistic. the family matter is just a cover up. maybe it’s he himself who thinks too highly of himself and feel the award was his and think his status is too good to film a small range tvb series. he was given the option to keep his hair and only shave the sides which is how we normally saw his hairstyle this year but he still decline.
Seems to me that he lost motivation since lost award TVB. When you expected and hoped too high then you will have this lost motivation. It encounters in all fields
I disagree. The article is also wrong, because he mentioned in other interviews a few years ago (around 2006-07, I think) that eventually he would have to take over his family’s business because I think his younger siblings are still too young.
And what’s wrong with balancing your options and choosing one that will give you the most opportunities? Don’t we all do that in life? whenever someone films a Qing drama, they have to cover their heads for months with a cap or a wig (Raymond Cho). It’s inconvenient, and tbh Raymond doesn’t need TVB anymore – you just need TVB to be recognized by the mainstream audience, and he’s already achieved that.
know that he said the same thing a few years ago, but what a coincident for him to bring it up again right after losing his face after losing the award which imo went to more deserving person than him. this is acting award voted by audience not an award that you get because your time is up for it.

I hope more actors refuse to shave their heads for Qing dynasty dramas. Then maybe we’ll see fewer Qing dynasty dramas. I can think of so many more interesting/aesthetically appealing periods in Chinese history. And yes, I realize this is quite shallow of me.
Don’t worry, I agree. There’s tons of them and they really need to understand that these guys do need their hair for other work like commercials, photoshoots, movies, etc. That kinda does come off as shallow but it’s the truth and its been happening too much recently.
I agree with you very much. Personally, I’m tired of watching these costume dramas. No offense, I love my ancestral history, and learn quite a lot from watching them even though it’s fictional. It enables us to travel back in time to learn how empires have formed and defected…but TVB overdo them. I’m personally very sick of watching them. Even if it was star-packed, I usually skip it, just like TC. Don’t worry, you’re not shallow about it. I’m sure there are a lot others who agree, but are afraid of being criticized over not appreciating history. But there’s only a fine line of realism and fictional, just like any other drama. There are many good periods, like you said, such as the communist period. Speaking of communist, I don’t ever remember TVB doing anything related to it, perhaps because of political reasons. Tvb will continue recycling stuff and making sequels out of dead dramas or popular ones from the past. That will eventually lead to their demise.
I don’t think TVB will film any drama series related to communism ……… it is a too sensitive issue in Hong Kong especially Hong Kong is part of China now. Moreover, how can TVB sell this kind of drama series to Mainland Chinese TV stations? Even in the past, all film producers would try to stay away from communism. In terms of market values, there is none in this type of drama series.
There was a really good show back in the early ’90s called A Time of Taste which was set in the early communist and cultural revolution era. Unfortunately, that was the last of its kind and since the handover, i don’t think they will ever do a show like that again.
Agree with you about Qing dramas. The past few years have been really over-saturated with them. Wonder when/if the trend will cool off.

It is sad to learn that Raymond Lam will leave entertainment industry for good sooner or later. I think his loss of TV King had something to do with his very recent decision. Don’t blame him. If he does not have to act for a living, he can make his decision easily.

Perhaps Raymond’s decision to eventually leave the entertainment industry was made before the TVB Anniversary Awards, thus TVB decided to give Wayne Lai the award instead?

Could be. Jayne, you may be right. Due to Raymond’s huge fan base in Hong Kong, it was very hard for him NOT to win TV King award. I was very surprised to see the results. Personally I don’t think Wayne Lai has this kind of fan base in Hong Kong though I know he is also a popular actor.

Jayne – I think the same too. I recall reading an article about Raymond telling Ms. Lok that he wants to film only 1 or 2 series per year in 2013. She just laughed it offffff. I pretty much think his decision was made before the award. He’s prob thinking ” If i win this award, I can retire or reduce my work load since I’ve achieved my goal”. A lot of people have no idea how popular and loved Wayne is in Hk. He and Moses has the most commercials aired in Hk. The two of them also has a lot of other advertisements in Hk. Investors can easily hire others like Raymond lam or Kenneth ma, by in the end they chose Wayne or Moses over them. Enough of the big fan base Raymond lam has, if his fanbase is so large why has his movies flopped?

We are not debating whether he needs the money or not. He can be the richest man on earth for all I care. Investors aren’t investing pennies on these artists, they are investing millions of dollars on these artists because they are popular and they can help sell the product. Moses and Wayne can sell these products better because they have a lot of fans that likes them. They can very easily hire Kenneth ma and Raymond lam for a lower price but they didn’t.
Just so you know, Ray also has countless advertisements with among the highest if not highest fees in TVB now. If Wayne is really earning well with his popularity, why must Wayne made statement recently that Ray’s earning in 6 months is more than what Wayne can made in 3 years. Ray also has more channels to earn money that Wayne and Moses doesn’t have: Music and Movies.

What’s with this trend of qing dynasty dramas. .? What, is TVB trying to appeal to the mainland audience because that’s what they like? There are so many other periods in China worth exploring .. The Tang Dynasty is my favourite. Better Halves with Steven Ma and Maggie Cheung is probably my favourite Tang Dynasty series. 😀
I like the Ming dynasty and Tang dynasty. I also miss Jin Yong’s stories very much, and wish TVB can film them again.

Sad news for all the RL fans. I say a time frame of 5-10 years before he departures. This year was pretty disheartening for him. I felt his pain as well, even though I rooted for Kenneth Ma. 2013 will only slim down his chances for the King award. He’ll probably only do 1 drama next year as well…Best of luck though.
If Raymond spends so little time on TVB drama series, it is very hard for him to win TV King. He needs a fabulous character, backed by a fabulous storyline and a grand production, to make him TV King. Moreover, he needs to improve his acting skills in order to compete with other actors, such as Wayne Lai, etc. and etc.
Yeah. Wayne Lai as of now, seems unstoppable. His acting skills is godly compared to all the other candidates and nominees. Eventually, there has to be someone that tops him, or at least give him a battle for the money.
I disagree. Grand productions never really helps these artists. It certainly hasn’t helped Raymond lam. He’s been casted in large budgeted productions but It’s wasn’t well received. Not everyone has he ability to carry a grand production and raymond lam certainly lacks in the department.
The 2011 awards showed that Wayne is not unstoppable — he lost to Kevin when he was nominated for a bland series like Forensic Heroes 3.

TVB gave him many awards in the course of his career with them including helping him with the Asia Pacific Award. Dont tell me TVB should only just continue to give all the awards to one person instead of acknowledging other talented actors around giving other people chances too.

Not winning the best actor award gave him a push to leave TVB. I don’t blame him cuz he work really hard on his past roles. Giving him the award will mean a lot to him. Money is nothing to him. Acting is his passion. No award no Lam Fung. He will enjoy spending time with his family. Maybe he will act later on when he’s ready.

Lol @ Kenneth Ma is better than Raymond. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a fan of Ma Ming since Survivor’s Law 2, but he needs to work on his eyes expression. Raymond is good at that ever since Tossing Wing, Turning Cloud. Ma Ming has been improving a lot, but imo Raymond is still better. However, I agree with your statement about Wayne, though his many years of acting experience with a wide variety of characters really helped.

Agree. Wayne Lai’s performance in “The Confidant” was not outstanding. I guess most people thought that Wayne was a good and well-rounded actor and, therefore, supported him automatically. Not everyone knows how to appreciate good acting.

Wayne Lai is an overall good actor, but his performance in “The Confidant” was not outstanding. That was not the Li Lianying in Ching Dynasty. It could be due to the descriptions of his character. But as per Wayne’s acting ability, he could have done better. He was outshone by Power Chan and even Raymond Cho in “The Confidant”.

Kenneth Ma could be more deserving for the TV King award based on his acting in “The Hippocratic Crush”. However, the award was based on public voting, and I don’t think Kenneth Ma’s fan base is as huge as Raymond Lam’s.

Raymond still got a lot to learn before getting BA award . He needs to gain more experience first like the other actor e.g kenneth and Wayne . Wayne Lai gone thru a lot of years of experience before winning BA award
It also depends on the type of character you’re cast with because c’mon it’s not hard to act at as 一件頭 at all. Ma Ming did well, but I think that his character wasn’t hard to act as the typical career minded man whereas Raymond’s character in High and Lows was a lot more eccentric and tempermental. People are just gonna love or hate his acting there. *shrugs*

agree ling. unlike wayne and kenneth ma ming who only use their acting alone to gain support, raymond can’t do so because his acting still need lots of improvement and not deserving of tv king yet. most of his support come from his idol image.
Agree, a good character will definitely help an artiste achieve better success. Wayne Lai won his first 2 awards as he got two good characters to act, i.e. Chai Gou and Lau Sing (especially Lau Sing). If he never got these two characters to act, he might still stay as a support actor.

I like Wayne, Ken and Raymond. Whoever wins, I’m cool with it. Nonetheless,from a neutral perspective, I don’t think Raymond is a sore loser. He has no reasons to be a sore loser. When we don’t win, we all get disappointed and Raymond did admit that himself. Perhaps, maybe he’s not as motivated since it will prob take another 5-10+ to get an award and he’s not in it for the money and money isn’t his motivator. Most actors are in it for the money. Hence, He already contributed more than 10 yrs with TVB, maybe it’s time for a change. I’m sure he likes to be an actor/entertainer, but it looks like he’s overworked and looked haggard lately. Personally I think that if Raymond Lam wants to win TV King, he needs to concentrate on his acting. It is very hard to achieve the best results if he acts and sings at the same time.

Did you misheard him say acting was his passion or did you misread it somewhere? Raymond had always said becoming a singer and singing was what he wanted for his career. He just so happened to fall into an acting company before he got the opportunity to sing.

And to be fair, his fanbase is from his acting days and then those fans extend to his singing because they like to see him act. If he started out singing I am not sure if he will have the same fanbase. Once you are established as an actor, as a singer he may be established too and fans will buy anything he makes, pictorials, etc.
He is a singer, pop singer if you must but hardly a musician. I suppose most singers in HK makes it as a matinee idol first and then build credibility for whatever they aim to be. If he intends to be just a singer 100% I don’t think he can earn enough. It is hard to make it as a singer 100% in HK.

The timing of the comments might be a bit unfortunate, but he doesn’t sound like sour grapes to me; I think a lot of us knew he’s lost motivation for quite a while – even before the awards – anyway.

Correlation does not equal causation. Just because Wayne, Charmaine, Kevin Cheng earned the Best Actor/Actress awards at TVB and started to appear more in ads, does not mean the awards is what triggered some of these investors to hire them. Yes, it gives a greater incentive for investors to hire them. However, Tavia did not win Best Actress till this year, she was hired many times for commercials for skin products and such. Then there is Linda Chung who got a hefty paycheck for a Lingerie ad, did she win the award? No.
And without a doubt, Moses and Wayne had earn their reputations long ago in HK, especially the latter since his acting resurgence, but to say Raymond isn’t anywhere as popular…that is flawed no matter how you rephrase it.
Yep, and in the case of Kevin, I wouldn’t attribute his recent career surge to him winning TVB Best Actor (and 2011 wasn’t the first time that he won BA) but to his popular role in Bu Bu Jing Xin.

If you can read Chinese, the article already said he is not quit…he said he will go back to family business one day, but when, he don’t know, maybe 1 year, 5 year..if family very needed him, he will. But he still have a lot job in hand..he will not quit because of award or without award…about what drama he is going to film in tvb 2013…they have not talked in detail yet…he is focusing on his concert now
Notice it only mentioned acting career here?!! That means leaving TVB and continuing his singing career. That works out cause singing doesn’t take up as much time as acting or both careers together as in the case of Ray. Other singers who just sing still spend lots of time with family. I’m not dissappointed cause I like his singing and plus, if he really does love acting, he might film a movie once in a while like other singers.
The timing of this interview is unfortunate, but my sense is that the media is over-playing the angle that Raymond is planning to quit due to bitterness over losing TV King. He’s just saying he plans to eventually leave the entertainment industry, but doesn’t say when (it could be many years from now), which isn’t that sensational news in itself.

Whatever LF does, he will have a clear conscience making that final decision. I think he will oversee his father’s company operations for 85% of the time. The other 15% will be dedicated to charity specials, concerts or a TV special/movie once a year to keep his notoriety in the entertainment business. This will continue to provide free positive publicity to his and /or his father’s company. Win-win situation.
