The 10th Asian Film Awards (AFA) were held in Macau on March 17, 2016. The Assassin <刺客聶隱娘>, a co-production between Hong Kong, Mainland China, and Taiwan, swept the awards with eight trophies, being the biggest winner of the night.
The Assassin, released in October 2015, stars Shu Qi (舒淇) as the title character, a female assassin known as Nie Yinniang. The film won a total of nine categories, including Best Film, Best Actress for Shu Qi, Best Director for Hou Hsiao-hsien (侯孝賢), Best Supporting Actress for Zhou Yun (周韵), Best Cinematography, Best Production Design, Best Original Music, Best Costume Design, and Best Sound.
Meanwhile, South Korean actor Lee Byung-hyun (李秉憲) defeated Hong Kong’s Donnie Yen (甄子丹) and China’s Feng Xianggang (馮小剛) for Best Actor. He won the trophy for his performance in Inside Men, a political thriller directed by Woo Min-ho.
Port of Call’s <踏血尋梅> Jessie Li (春夏), who won Best Actress at the Hong Kong Film Critics Society, won AFA’s Best Newcomer award. The 23-year-old is also nominated for Best Actress and Best New Performer at the upcoming Hong Kong Film Awards.
