Wong Jing’s Film Remake of “The Heaven Sword and Dragon Sabre” to Star Raymond Lam?

Wong Jing (王晶) will be remaking a famous wuxia film and it’s going to be a star-studded cast.

His 1993 film Kung Fu Cult Master <倚天屠龍記之魔教教主>, which starred Jet Li (李連傑), Sharla Cheung (張敏), Gigi Lai (黎姿), Chingmy Yau (邱淑貞) and is a remake of the Jin Yong (金庸) novel The Heaven Sword and Dragon Sabre <倚天屠龍記>, will be receiving the remake treatment next year.

News of the remake came from Wong Jing himself, who shared on Weibo that his next film will be about “Zhang Wuji finally going to Dadu to find Zhao Min.”

Jet Li as Zhang Wuji and Sharla Cheung as Zhao Min in the 1993 film.

In the 1993 film, Jet Li starred as the chivalrous protagonist Zhang Wuji, with Sharlan Cheung starring as Zhao Min and Gigi Lai as Zhou Zhiruo, the love interests. The film ends in a cliffhanger, in which Zhao Min tells Zhang Wuji to search for her in Dadu.

However, due to the film’s box office, the originally planned trilogy did not have follow-up sequels.

While casting for the new 2020 film is still kept in tight wraps, netizens believe that Wong Jing is looking to hire big name stars for the roles. There’s been speculation that Raymond Lam (林峯) will star as Zhang Wuji, with Louis Koo (古天樂) playing his father Zhang Cuishan.

There are also rumors that Donnie Yen (甄子丹) will play Zhang Sanfeng, although the Ip Man (葉問) star said he will be retiring from kung fu films after Ip Man 4: The Finale <葉問4:完結篇>.

There is support for Janice Man (文詠珊) to play Zhao Min, and the legendary Elvis Tsui (徐錦江) to play the Golden Lion.

  1. Janice man as Zhou man? Zhou man is supposed to be mixed race. Janice is not fit for the role and neither is she pretty enough nor acts well.

  2. Oh man, the 93 movie version is my fav adaption to date! The acting was there, enjoyable realistic at the time fighting choreography sequences, pace was good, and I literally like every actors/actresses. Did it bomb in box office back then hence no sequels?

With this new rumor cast, I wish there’s no sequel! Just let it die, dude.

BTW, this would be a sequel because it continues the storyline albeit new cast. It’s not a remake.

    1. @jjwong it didn’t actually bomb… I think they’re just going by Wikipedia. The money they made was what most average movies made. I think it’s the money they had put in it, they didn’t make the profit back they’d hope to.

    2. @jjwong Have enjoyed the movie version too, simply because I like the change in Zhang Wuji, felt he has more character than the wishy washy in the original.
If they made the sequel back then with the same cast, I would be thrilled. Now, nah.

  3. If it’s a continuation of ‘Kung Fu Cult Master’, there won’t be a Zhang Cuishan to cast. The character, played by Francis Ng’, already died in ‘Kung Fu Cult Master’
