48th Golden Bell Awards: Vic Chou is the New TV King

Vic Chou (周渝民) is Taiwan’s new TV King! The 48th Golden Bell Awards, Taiwan’s awards presentation to celebrate its television and radio programming of the year, was held on Friday, October 25 at the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall. Attended by over a hundred artists, the ceremony was hosted by Hu Gua (胡瓜), Ou Han Sheng (歐漢聲), and Amber An (安心亞), while the red carpet pre-show was hosted by Ken Lin (林暐恆) and Patty Wu (吳怡霈).

Commended for his role as a World War II prisoner in the television drama Home <回家>, Vic won award for Best Actor in a Drama Series. Vic was close in the run for Best Actor in 2009, but lost out to Mark Chao (趙又廷), his costar in Black & White <痞子英雄>.

Vic expressed shocked by his Golden Bell win, and said that his manager urged him to prepare an acceptance speech the day before but Vic did not take the advice seriously. “I have worked with many seniors outside of Taiwan and it makes me realize how insufficient I really am. Whenever I am nominated I feel like the seniors should win.”

Also nominated for Best Actor in a Drama Series was veteran actor and Vic’s Home costar, Long Shao Hua (龍劭華), for his role as an Alzheimer’s disease sufferer in the drama, Flavor of Life <含笑食堂>.  Despite his loss in the drama series category, Long won Best Actor in a Mini-Drama or Television Film for his performance in Bala Hong’s Melody <喇叭宏的悲喜曲>.

Lin Chia Wei (林嘉瑋), Mo Tzu Yi (莫子儀), and Huang Jian Wei (黃健瑋) were also nominated for Best Actor in a Dream Series.

Winning Best Actress in a Drama Series was Miao Ke Li (苗可麗), who portrayed the daughter of Long Shao Hua’s role in Flavor of Life. This year was her first year to win a Golden Bell Best Actress award. In her speech, Miao tearfully thanked her parents and her young daughter. The 42-year-old debuted as a singer when she was 15 in the late 1980s, but her singing career ended quickly in 1989 with just two albums released.

Also nominated for Best Actress in a Drama Series was Ding Ye Tian (丁也恬), Jade Chou (周幼婷), Zaizai Lin (林辰唏), and Nikki Hsieh (謝欣穎).

Vic’s Home costar, Lee Lee Zen (李李仁), took home the award for Best Supporting in a Drama Series, while 25-year-old Esther Liu (劉品言) won Best Supporting Actress.

Critical favorites Home and Flavor of Life were both nominated for Best Drama Series, but it was Esther Liu’s Falling <含苞欲墜的每一天> that ultimately won the category.

  1. I’m in the US. Can anyone explain to me if this is a “big” award? Equivalent to Oscar/Golden Globes? If not, what are the equivalents?

    1. It’s the Taiwan equivalent of Emmy Awards. It’s also one of the three major award giving bodies/ceremonies in Taiwan. Golden Horse Award(for films) and Golden Melody Awards(for music) are the other two. So yeah, it’s a pretty big award. Anyway, CONGRATS to ZAIZAI for a well deserved VICTORY. I believed it should have been yours 4 years ago.

    1. I had a HUGE crush on Vic back in high school (when he was still in F4). I watched Meteor Garden so many times I lost count lol. It’s hard to believe he still looks so handsome now…He is aging so well.

  2. For a moment one swift glance and I thought a younger tony leung (chiu wai).
