Grace Chan’s Role in “The Vampire” is Unlikeable

Grace Chan (陳凱琳) is currently one of TVB’s top promoted young stars, earning positive reviews for her performance in Raising the Bar <四個女仔三個BAR>. Currently, the 23-year-old is shooting the new TVB fantasy drama The Vampire <殭>, which also stars Kevin Cheng (鄭嘉穎) and Kay Tse (謝安琪).

“It’s a very complicated role,” said Grace. “It’s similar to my role in Raising the Bar, which was also an unlikeable role.”

Grace portrayed barrister trainee Giselle in Raising the Bar, which ended its broadcast in February. Grace said she read netizen comments that reacted negatively to Giselle, which had upset her. “I was just doing what the script told me to do. I don’t know why that resulted in viewers hating me.” However, Grace was enlightened when her costars and seniors told her to see the situation positively, as the drama engaged viewers into avid discussion over its plot.

In The Vampire, Grace portrays Kay’s younger sister who suffers from aphasia. Grace revealed, “She becomes more and more unlikeable and problematic as the story continues, but she does everything for love.”

Girl Talk

Along with Alice Chan (陳煒), Grace recently appeared in an episode of Tracy Ip (葉翠翠) and Vivien Yeo’s (楊秀惠) talk show All Things Girl <姊妹淘>, where they talked about fashion beauty secrets for their legs. Alice, who has been learning dance, said her legs have become thick and muscular. She also shared that she tends to dress plainly for work, but if she is going out with friends, she will take the time to dress up.

Grace, on the other hand, admitted that she is always careful about her appearance. She said, “All girls like to look pretty. When I was younger, my grandfather always laughed at me about it, telling me that if I continue to keep looking at myself in the mirror all the time, I’d eventually break it.”

A Big Movie Fan

Surprisingly, Grace said she actually spends more money on movies than on beauty products. The former Miss Hong Kong shared that she is an avid moviegoer, “I watch everything, including the bad movies. You can benefit from them. I don’t think I’m wasting time. Personally, I tend to watch the early morning showings, and if I have time before work, I’ll watch a movie.”

  1. Kids now a these days cannot take criticism, just do what you set out to do. There will always be people who loves to hate so they can feel good about themselves.

    1. But she never said she can not take criticism. She just said she was just upset about what netizen was saying about her when she was just following the script itself.

  2. I think shes got tone down her acting a lil bit I like her more theN Sisley tbh

  3. well, the script was written in a way that Giselle was suppose to be a character to be hated … but of course in terms of acting Grace acted the character well as written in the script.

  4. There were mixed reviews about Giselle, so maybe get vampire role is the same.

  5. Hope tvb can give her a more likeable role!!! Grace is pleasant to watch. But if tvb let her stuck with irritating role, she may go downhill!!! Her role is irritating and seems not rationale since Overachievers….

  6. Well, she did say that she didn’t want to be typecast into the “intelligent beauty” roles right? So she should be happy 😛
If she’s getting people to dislike her when she plays nasty roles, then she’s doing her job well.
She needs to learn to shrug off those people incapable of separating the role from the actor/actress.

  7. I find Grace very comfortable to watch, much more calming than sisley

  8. i thought giselle was okay. much better than sisley in any dramas i’ve watched w/ her in it no matter how small her part is….

  9. I doubt the script intention was to have Giselle as a unlikeable role. She was the understanding goddess angel that protect everyone around her throughout the whole series except that one incident with Ben’s case. It seems to me like an unexpected audience reaction to her character then intentional.

  10. Her body structure is so small that I don’t think anyone looks good with her.

    1. Yea, that is my only program with Grace. At time, it look like a teenage body. It s hard to focus on her acting. I can’t imagine her in real life, especially TV make you look 10 pounds more.

  11. Giselle is not a likeable character but Grace did well and easy to watch her. Sisley on the other hand is annoying and cant stand watching her.
