Kenneth Ma Signs 5-Year TVB Contract in Exchange for TV King
Toiling fourteen years at TVB, Kenneth Ma’s (馬國明) strong work ethics are well-known. Coupled with his low-profile personality and easy manageability, Kenneth has become a favorite among TVB producers and management. Last year’s The Hippocratic Crush <On Call 36小時> helped Kenneth win his first TV King award at Malaysia’s Astro Awards and he may now finally win Hong Kong TV King for a small sacrifice.
In recent years, TVB leads Kevin Cheng (鄭嘉穎) and Raymond Lam (林峯) have been focusing on the mainland market. TVB is afraid to lose another valuable star and reached out to Kenneth to discuss his contract renewal. Aside from nearly doubling his fees, TVB sweetened the five-year deal by promising to make Kenneth TV King at this year’s TVB Anniversary Awards.
Kenneth’s popularity continued to rise as he has been given more professional roles to play. His latest series, Triumph in the Skies 2 <衝上雲霄II>, opened to high ratings and viewer praise. Although Kenneth only plays a supporting role in the series, he cuts a dashing figure as a pilot and will be romantically involved with flight attendants Skye Chan (陳倩揚), Coffee Lam (林芊妤). His relationship with older divorcée Elena Kong (江美儀) will start out purely sexual, but turns into real love.
Wayne Lai and Ruco Chan Sacrificed
To heavily promote Kenneth, The Hippocratic Crush 2 was designated as an Anniversary series, instead of Catherine Tsang’s (曾勵珍) original choices of Ruco Chan’s (陳展鵬) Brother’s Keeper <巨輪> and Wayne Lai’s (黎耀祥) Rosy Business 3: No Reserve <巾幗梟雄之諜血長天>.
An inside source revealed the reason TVB prioritized Kenneth over Wayne Lai and Ruco Chan. “Wayne is not TVB’s managed artist. Instead of rewarding outsiders, it’s better to promote the company’s own artist as TV King. They felt that Ruco Chan is not ready yet, afraid he will not collect enough [votes] so they pushed for Kenneth. When Kenneth’s show fees increase after winning Best Actor, TVB will also benefit.”
With The Hippocratic Crush 2‘s big budget and strong cast, Kenneth will be thrust into the limelight when the series airs later this year. Reuniting with TV Queen Tavia Yeung (楊怡) and resuming his popular doctor role, Kenneth may have the lucky cards in his favor in this year’s awards race.
Kenneth Admits Renewing TVB Contract
An inside source leaked, “Kenneth’s contract will be over at the end of next year, but two months ago a [TVB staff] has already discussed his contract with him. Aside from increasing his salary, Kenneth wants to film in China the most. Because of filming Silver Spoon, Sterling Shackles <名媛望族> and Triumph in the Skies 2, the company declined four mainland scripts for Kenneth. He was a bit unhappy and complained to his manager. TVB knows that he wishes to earn money and agreed that after filming Cold Mountain, Hidden Dragon <寒山潛龍>, they will see what mainland scripts they can negotiate for him. Kenneth’s show fees have increased from $8,000 HKD to $14,000 HKD. Since Kenneth was satisfied with the terms, he immediately signed the [new] contract.”
Speaking with the press, Kenneth acknowledged that he had just renewed his management contract with TVB under satisfactory fees. Kenneth said, “Yes, I renewed my contract earlier. The company treats me very well. At first, the company wanted me to sign a lengthier contract, but I felt that five years are enough.”
Prompted about The Hippocratic Crush 2 airing as an Anniversary series in order to push him to TV King, Kenneth reacted, “Huh! You guys also know! I don’t mind as long as many people watch the series; the awards are secondary.”

kenneth is humble! look how he place more importance in on call 2 than on his own award! besides tvb won’t give much! that’s why kenneth really wants to work in mainland where everyone else is getting big money and buying houses open businesses everywhere but tvb don’t let him go at all! so cruel for tvb to rejected 4 mainland series in order for him to be in triumph2 but glad he’s in triumph2 because the series is wonderful and the best so far, at least until on call 2 aired!
Yea $8000 is not a lot. I thought his fees were around $15,000.
It Took Him Forever Just To Get A Raise And Get Famous. Raymond Lam, Bosco Wong, Ron Ng those 3 got famous and have earned more money the Kenneth and they are younger.

The older he gets the more he is favored by the public. He still has time to catch up in terms of earning.
Raymond Lam, Ron Ng and even Boscos target market are in general the younger audience (in general younger audience like those “bad boy type”)
but he is more likely to be marketed to target older audience (OLs, silai’s, 30/35 yrs and up)
hope this new contract terms means kenneth can finally go make a mainland series that he wished since long ago and and yes tv king sounds great! but kenneth deserves it because he’s great in on call installments!

michael miu is handsome but that’s what he has been for 20 years. his acting has no improvement whatsoever and he keep being the one note handsome old man onscreen although he’s a lot better and more handsome than raymond lam in highs and lows. the only series he showed improvement.

Everyone has to age since who can be forever young??? I think Chilam and Francis look good for their age since I guess you tend to forget that Francis is in his early 50s while Chilam is in his 40s. If you want them to look like a 20 or 30 year old, that is simply not possible…

The early speculations may be true. I think Kenneth may have a chance to win TVB Best Actor this year because he is the best candidate to become #1 Brother at TVB for now.
Other more popular actors are already too immersed in mainland China for TVB to give them the award.

@HTS: LOL…yup…actually, that’s the way it has always been (the awards being based on loyalty and favoritism)….it’s just that in the past, it was less obvious because many of those same ‘loyal’ and ‘favorite’ artists also happened to be talented as well. Nowadays, the ‘talent’ part is severely lacking, so there’s more ‘controversy’ and ‘argument’ over who truly ‘deserves’ the award and who doesn’t….to me, those awards lost their ‘meaning’ years ago….

I don’t think Ruco Chan is ready yet for TV King awards. He has assumed 1st lead roles since “The Other Truth” in 2011 and he has only filmed a few small productions as 1st lead actor. If he gets it, all the other siu sangs will definitely complain and leave TVB soon.
Ruco’s acting is fairly decent, but he needs to try different types of roles to prove that his acting abilities and skills deserve the TV King award.
Roco has Brother’s Keeper and Ruse of Engagement. Just that they have not been aired.
Agree that Ruco definitely deserves to be tv king in terms of acting. But I think tbb won’t let him go too fast since they are still holding Ruse of engagement, in order to keep the siu sangs in peace. Anyway Brothers’ Keeper may level him up.
both kenneth and ruco are top candidates for #1 tvb brother now deservingly. yes ruco’s position will level up when brother’s keeper aired on 23 sept and surely he will be final 5 for tv king. don’t think tvb will award him tv king this year unless he becomes the unbeatable talk of the town as famous as wayne’s chai 9 in 2009. kenneth still has the higher end by resuming his amazing role in on call 2 which gives him breakthrough last year and makes him very appealing to audience!

I believe if an actor winson their performances, audience’s perspective of his acting, and nothing else, that’s when awards means something. If an actor purely wins because of a contract sign, that’s kinda lame.

kenneth has on call 2 to show off his acting skills. heard on call 2 has more touching scenes and hardships than the first on call for his role. looking forward for on call 2! triumph2 and oncall2 might be the best series this year!

Hope he doesn’t regret that and that the empty(fake) title of TVB king will make him happy enough to forget all the mainland shows he wont be able to film while he’s stuck in HK filming low quality repetitive crud.
Unless he gets a role that challenges him (unlikely at TVB), he won’t be able to improve his acting and move on to movies.
He’s at the prime of his life now and it would be a shame to waste it all at TVB.
If he were to win I’d rather it’ll be for his performance if it was great than for the contract trade terms.

Out of S4 & Raymond, I would have never guessed that Kenneth might be the first to capture the Best Actor award! I think he has a very good shot with On Call 2 and will definitely be one of the leading contenders since it’s also an anniversary series.

What a good comment! Is he supposed to win TV King from now on, year after year because he is supposed to be the “BEST” actor in TVB? In that case, I feel sorry for TVB for just having one BEST actor in such a big organization.

I never think Wayne Lai is the BEST actor in TVB. Of course he is one of those good acting veterans, but he is NOT best in every single role. BB just proved to us that he is not ALWAYS THE BEST actor in every single drama series. He was not that great in “The Confidant” either, but he did very well in “RB1” and “No Regrets”.
Wayne is one of my faves and I think he does very well in these dramatic characters, but I agree that he is not always the best. I think one of my least fave role of his is when he was in Forensic Heroes because he was just so boring!
Wayne was not too bad in “FH3”, but not impressive.
I like Kenneth Ma as well, but I hope he wins TV King not because of his 5-year new contract, but because of his BEST acting.

True, logic tells us that the award should be based on acting and nothing else…but of course, this is TVB we’re talking about here…. TVB pretty much gives the award to whomever they want – it has nothing to do with acting talent or skill. You could be the worst actor on the planet but TVB can still decide to give you the award and come up with a justified explanation for doing so (and before people start jumping to conclusions, the ‘worst actor’ part I wrote is meant as a general comment and is NOT referring to any artist in particular). Oh and of course, they don’t just do it with the Anniversary awards (they do the same thing with their JSG awards and pretty much any award that they hand out). At the end of the day, it’s all about the ‘politics’…..

Besides, Kenneth’s priority has always been on the money. I could believe that he stipulated he wanted filming opportunities in Mainland, but not that he would demand the award. Although TVB always try very hard to give the award to contract-managed artistes, the wind can quickly and he has some strong competitors this year. He couldn’t even win against Wayne last year even though THC was hyped and TC was a blip on the radar. Can he really win against Francis, Chilam, Lawrence, Wayne or Moses?
Although I do think TVB uses the awards as a tool, ever since Kevin Cheng’s controversial win in 2006, I feel that they have tried not to make the same mistake and avoid the backlash. Even though Myolie and Tavia won for shows that weren’t as well-received, there was no backlash because the audience felt it was deserved just for different shows.

chilam is a good actor, but even a good actor needs a good platform to promote himself, and tvb is that. none of chilams mainland series generated even 1/10 as much noise and media attention (even in china), as one role in TITS2. Thats why tvb is still important to most former actors, even though they pay peanuts compared to mainland.

but 99% of mainland series are crap (they produce about 500 series a year or more, i think i read in an article), so if they dont get a home run (like kevin), go back to tvb and rinse and repeat.

Yes she did, she benefited from the noise and all. The award to many stars is like bonus from company, a validation that the company values them and of course an acknowledgement of their acting talents, however much many may disagree on the actual talent, etc.
But no, Tavia is not hugely popular but she has her own dedicated fans who will trample on anyone who dares to say “she is a good actress but not a leading actress”.

Right. Kenneth Ma did not act well in “SSSS”. He did very well in “Grace under Fire” and “A Fistful of Stances”. I hope he wins the TV King award because of his good acting in 2013 (if he really wins).

Seriously I hoped he learn a bit of acting during his time in TITS 2 because the more he is next to Francis Ng or Chilam, the more inadequate I feel he is. I will be first to say he is not ready for TV King. I thought he was but I feel Ruco is more ready. But Ruco needs a better role than the ones he is given to justify it.
Kenneth Ma’s character in TITS 2 is not convincing at all. He looks very young and childish and not too confident. His role is not heavy enough to justify his acting (good or not) so far.
Ron Ng’s character is more convincing that Kenneth’s.

As I never like Francis Ng, I don’t think too highly of him. He may be good to many people, but not to me.
Francis Ng is actually the best actor there but again like series, some actors may not be as well liked. I do agree he sometimes look like a mad man but I won’t deny he is a fantastic actor, in TVB at least. He is consistent, if anything else does not convince you. It’s like he just filmed the sequel right after the 1st series. Not many can achieve that consistency.
Francis Ng’s acting is always like that in any drama series. Of course, he can achieve “consistency”. At least he talks the same in every drama series ……. “mumble and jumble”. I find hard to “understand” him sometimes. He is never clear in his dialogues, since day 1.
Again, that is my personal opinion about Francis Ng. Personally I like artistes’ articulation in words (dialogues).

Do you mean Roger Kwok? No, I don’t like him. He does not speak well and I don’t like his voice. I don’t like Raymond Wong’s voice either, too low and monotonous, but he speaks well and clearly. Ruco Chan’s voice is excellent, and he speaks well. Gallen Lo and Bowie Lam are excellent. Steven Ma is good too. There are many others who are good and articulate. Articulation is my No 1 requirement in acting, and facial expressions and inner emotions are my No. 2 requirements. What is the point of watching an artiste if I can’t even understand what he is saying?

There are some people who liked SSSS as a drama. It may not be a good drama to you, but it could be a good drama to other people. It all depends on preferences.

I don’t agree. When TVB first started the awards, the people who won their awards was worth it. It was only recently that they started giving some awards to people who didn’t deserve it.
Usually when I like a drama, it’s because it has a good storyline.. And speaking for myself, I liked SSSS. It had an interesting casting and I tend to like dramas with Damien in it.

When TVB first started the award, it was rigged shamelessly. Now they at least try to hide it with so called fan votes, etc. But we all know, it is rigged but at least they flow along the lines of fans’ reaction. I never doubted the insincerity of the award more so everything was either arbitrary or secretive. The fact they do get it right sometimes does not mean it is fair and just. It just means some are so popular they can’t change the way it is. Rosy Business is a good example.

Sakura, you got to see it for what it is. I am not the only one who thinks that way. Lately TVB tried to get more transparency in but that is even disputed. But at least they try. Some series during back then weren’t even considered for reasons of main stars no signing contracts, etc. If they were, such as JTTW, Old Time Buddies may not get as much. Not to say OTB wasn’t great, it was deserving but JTTW was taken out of the equation. There were underhanded tactics, etc. Anyway if you don’t agree, it is ok. Come awards time, come back here and read the pages and pages of conspiracy theories. You can see some perspective there.

Emilee, the difference is the word fan votes. If it is rigged, for whatever reason or by any means, then it is akin to cheating the fans and that all those votings are not considered and so it isn’t then fan votes. Of course there’s the addition of peers voting, executive voting, etc which diluted the votes so how much is fan votes is itself arguable.

This is perfect. To add on, the degree of being rigged was not super high/ high importance when they first started out. Right now, the awards are rigged because TVB has already set a winner based on “who will sign the contract” type of deal regardless of the votes and whatnot.

And fan votes aren’t the things that are making the whole tvb awards look bad. It’s how tvb executives already planned the winners ahead of time and who they would sacrifice just to please the winner.
“Yes Sally, not much difference but the fans won’t get to say “Rigged!”. For oscars all we can say is disputed results, no taste, not even relevant since fans didn’t get to vote.
even if the votes are by “their peers” not by fans, favouritism and whatnot also affects it. Not a foul-proof plan.
And are you telling me, “peers” vote differently than fans vote? Not really. “peers” are still human beings and favoritism is key.
Personally I feel that if the awards are given to BEST artistes with BEST acting, it should be judged by professional judges (such as producers, directors, independent artistes with good acting, and people writing critiques) and not by regular audience.
The reasons are:
1) Acting is very subjective. At least professionals know better about acting than regular audience.
2) Votes are usually submitted by those artistes’ fans, and not audience who knows about acting.
3) Whoever artiste has bigger fan base will most likely get more votes. It does not mean that particular artiste is the best artiste.

Audience votes should only apply to FAVOURITE artistes (male and female).
That’s a whole load of work (and inflated prestige) for awards that come from one TV station. (Not to mention, one that’s floundering right now and most awards are given to the best of the worst.) Might mean more if we’re dealing with the whole television industry, but even then, Hong Kong’s a very small market.
Anyway, I liked the way they treated it as a party/celebration back in the 90’s.
I agree with skinnymocha on this too. Many of those winners actually deserved it instead of blindly giving it to those who renewed their contract. Was it rigged as much as now? I do not know, I was too young during then to focus on these awards.
I wouldn’t say the tvb awards are rigged. Just some awards (especially Best Actor/Best actress) are done in advance. However, i do believe that lifetime achievement awards are done very well by tvb. I hope that Lau Dan gets it within these couple of years.
Ha! If Lau Dan doesn’t get a lifetime achievement award, they at least need to invent a Jin Yong award for him. He’s practically been in every Jin Yong adaptation by TVB since the 80’s.

In all honesty, Kenneth deserves to win TV king. I just don’t like how there’s news that he’ll win in exchange for signing a contract. I think in the recent years TVB is doing such unnecessary promotion… I mean like the artiste should win because his role is good and his acting is awesome..not because he’s stuffed into a role purposely just so he could win.
He works hardm but he is not act that good to be TV King…But TVB can get to whoever he want…sight
With such talents, signing contracts for TVKing is understandable.
Among the young Siu sang Bosco Wong’s acting is the best. Hoping he will win TV king this year.
