42-Year-Old Kevin Cheng Craves Marriage: “Only Smart Women Apply!”

Forty-two-year-old Kevin Cheng (鄭嘉穎) has been single for a long time. Eager to date, get married, and have children, Kevin wished to enter another stage in life. Despite his eagerness, the first step in choosing a partner was setting the criteria. Between beauty and wisdom, he would prefer to choose a smart woman. Since marriage was for a lifetime, Kevin noted, “I’ll go without than settle for someone shabby (寧缺勿濫)!”

“At my age, why would I not wish to date? It’s a very normal thing to do. Actually,  I do not mind revealing my dating status as long as it is not at the outset of the relationship. In a  relationship, you need to go through a bit of understanding before dating. When the dating relationship has stabilized, then it is okay to reveal it. Oftentimes, the relationship did not reach that stable period yet, then how can I reveal it? I do not mind openly dating and will not get married secretly. If I were to get married, I will notify everyone. If I were to have children, I do not mind letting others know but please do not photograph them;  this is [for their privacy] and to protect them!”

Need to Be Extra Cautious

“At my age, I no longer need to worry about a wife and children affecting my image. I am no longer 18 or 22-years-old. However, I can not rush it and have to encounter the right person first. Due to my old age, I need to be extra cautious. If I encounter an incompatible wife and there is a need to get divorced, it would be such a headache! I hope to be successfully in one attempt and have several children!

“Regarding the selection criteria for a partner, the most important thing is compatibility so that we can be friends, able to talk about anything and discuss matters reasonably. It would be great for a woman to have both beauty and wisdom; however, if I had to choose, I would prefer wisdom. In reality, a love relationship’s passion will dwindle over the long-term. If we can remain friends, then our relationship can endure.  When the children grow up, they will not accompany you for the rest of your life. In old age, spouses will support each other, so it is most important to find someone who you can talk to.

“My life is like this right now; I have to continuously divide my time between Hong Kong and China. People ask me what is the difference between Hong Kong and mainland girls. I said that the only difference is one speaks Cantonese and the other Mandarin!”

Jayne: Kevin seems to have attained a level of confidence in dealing with reporters now. Since Law Ba, he seems so relaxed and doesn’t take himself too seriously now.

  1. LOL. “only smart woman” yeah would be a mistake to marry and have children with an airhead, however a smart woman might be too smart for her own good!

Anyway good luck and hopefully you can avoid plastic dolls…

    1. Exoidus,
Kevin has quite good taste in women. He seems to prefer porcelain skin type with large eyes. His past girlfriends, Linda Wong, Nikki Chow, and Charmaine Sheh were quite beautiful…

      1. I don’t think Charmaine is beautiful at all but that is just what I think…

      2. Jayne,

I have never considered nikki beautiful. Maybe, charmaine if her nose was a bit smaller and if she has little more meat. Both of them are too skinny for my taste.

      3. Charmaine cannot be categorised as “beauty” but she has this aura there that gives ppl she’s unique. With her latest hairstyle, it gives her a “cool” image. I think Charmaine’s eyes are the most prettiest asset in her face, cuz her eyes can really do the talking.

AS for Nikki, she got the height of a model, clear and porcelain skin/complexion and her facial is very decent, gentle and give ppl a fresh and young looking looks. Dunno about her mentality though so can’t comment on that.

Linda wong was never in my pretty list. I dont think any angle of her is pretty..she just got the height..that’s all.

      4. Yeah I don’t think Charmaine is beautiful. Niki is cute and pretty – I actually think her sister, Kathy is hot though!

      5. Nikki is definitely something. Pretty wouldn’t be how I’d describe her though.

      6. I actually have always liked Kevin. I think his acting is not that bad. I think he isn’t given the villain role enough. The good guy roles usually don’t showcase anything. Although it’s good to see a good guy. It’s like Raymond Lam most of his roles are horrible because non have been outside his usual. It’s always a nice guy. I think Kevin does the worse when he has to be emotionally sad. When he’s being playful like in Ghetto Justice I can buy it. It’s an awkward kind of playful that someone I know in real life is actually like. The problem I’ve always found is that he keeps getting similar roles. This seems to be the case for Ron Ng, Raymond Lam, and probably others. Well this is of course all my opinion so there is no truth to any of it.

      7. I like Kevin , he is acting very good , and he is good singing too,I think kevin and charmaine sheh are good couple , …..

    2. It seem like he can avoid plastic doll while working in Mainland. Unlike Ron, who can’t resist the Plastic barbie doll Viann.. feel bad for Ron but he’s prolly asking for better sex than a steady relationship.

      1. Maybe Kevin is just better than Ron at not getting hooked by the mainland girl. I’m sure KC gets his share of attention in China but he doesn’t get tied down to one.

      2. I just happen to see Liu Shi Shi pulling support to vote Kevin for the award in her weibo lol

      3. Fox,

Is that old rumor from when they were filming?

They did a watch event recently and I don’t think the reporters mentioned anything.

Anyway, she is quite young but Kevin probably wouldn’t complain.

      4. I do believe Kevin and Liu Shi Shi are attracted to each other. I prefer Liu shi shi with kevin vs nikki/charmaine.
Liu shi shi gives off a very mature/graceful vibe which seem to be kevin perference(except nikki). She’s seem more friendly/silly/airhead.

      5. Agree with Funn about Shi Shi and Yuan Hong. I definitely think they are for real. Especially considering the level of teasing they get from the BBJX cast.

I actually think Annie Liu and Kevin is a better fit anyway. Shi Shi is too young regardless how mature and graceful she is.

      6. Advo,

So you believe Kevin is more comparable with Annie because she is closer to Kevin age or because they share similar personality?

I do remember Kevin saying he prefer LSS type since she is more outgoing compare to Annie who is more reserve.

Maybe, that why his relationship with Niki lasted for many years (outgoing) vs Charmaine (more reserve) which only last few months.

      7. @ Disney fan,

Both. Either. I guess. I like the chemistry between them, in the show and in interviews. And Shi Shi doesn’t really come off that outgoing to me, only with people she’s close to/knows well.

As for Niki vs. Charmaine – he’s also claims to want smart women and Charmaine comes off smarter than Niki so who knows. I don’t think LSS is attracted to Kevin, especially not when I see how she interacts with Yuan Hong.

    3. Looking at his past rumoured and real girlfriends, plastic doll doesn’t seem his taste.

      1. Maybe young girls? As in 20s?

I don’t think Shi Shi is even remotely interested in Kevin and vice versa. If any should be Kevin and that other girl as 10th’s wife since you all mentioned he likes outgoing type. No no I think Shi Shi is Yuan Hong’s intended.

    4. I know i like Kevin Cheng but I want get married with Bowie Lam ,, because he is my dream husband

      1. Tina… sorry.. but Bowie… may… be… more… interested…in… well never mind.

  2. As long not the cheap girl Rose Chan is ok ,for slepping with Rose is ok but not in love.

  3. Always found Kevin Cheng likeable even in his boring roles. Hope to see him happy and settle down. Wait, are the rumours with Charmaine real? I always thought they didn’t have much chemistry onscreen so didn’t think they actually dated…

    1. There was pics of Kevin visiting Charmaine’s home a night although I dont have these pics in hand now. But i rmb there was really pics of them being together “offscreen”.. Kevin was rumoured with Selina Li once but the rumour just died off few week later.

      1. The paps got pictures of charmaine riding in Kevin’s car a couple of times.
Sigh, too bad they didn’t work out. Charm is definitely a smart girl but maybe too smart for him at the time.

    2. I don’t think Charmaine and him were real. Both of them had always said they are friends

      1. I know they were. Gut feeling. Probably will get back together at some point.

      2. “Friends” is just translation for they weren’t stable yet.

Actually, KC never admitted to any relationship before. Linda and niki were pretty steady but he still didn’t reveal. Unless he means from now on, he’ll be more open.

      3. I think they were real too. I don’t think they are together any longer but with neither of them getting any younger and the fact that their personalities are quite compatible, I could see them getting back together.

  4. I’m glad he is no longer with Charmaine whether if it was real or not..sorry to her fans! 😀

I thought he and Niki Chow looked really good together..pity it did not work out.

  5. I am glad that Kevin is more open and honest about everything and will not hide his love life since I don’t see any reason for him to hide it at this point in his life and career. Sadly, you don’t always end up with what you want… But he is getting pretty old so I don’t think he qualifies to be too picky or else he will end up being single for life.

I agree with him that it is very important for a couple of have a good friendship. Hopefully he will find someone suitable soon and share his happiness with everyone. It is not good even for guys to wait too long…

    1. I also want to add that he wants a smart woman… Sorry but I have a feeling that he may end up with someone not that bright. I have seen that people want this and that, but then they end up with exactly what they don’t want….But oh well, lets see…

  6. I never thought he took himself seriously in the past. I just feel he was and can at times now be indecisive and he looks that sort. Too gentle for his own good, too “moi soh wai” sort of attitude. I am glad he attained a level of confidence. Frankly I may slam his acting, but out of camera I always felt he is a decent guy, a bit soft, a bit non-aggressive, a bit too gentle, but in the end a decent guy. He and Niki Chow wouldn’t have worked I believe because she is mentally too young. Like this interview it implies he want a wise woman and a wise woman is often not that sort of young girls but closer to his age. I really like the idea of him and Charmaine; whilst he is gentle, she is shrewd. Whilst he is gaining confidence, she knows where she is heading. It is good that at least one partner has an opinion. Both having an opinion will lead to quarrel and none having an opinion will just make things worse. But does he look like the sort who can make decisive decision and protect the woman he loves? Probably yes because I feel he has come out of his shell recently, but I still think he is not aggressive enough. He just seems happy at everything but I am also aware the one with the perpetual smiles in public usually hides a lot of emotions in private. At least so far his eyes has yet to attain that glazed sort of look, that standard glazed eyes that most experienced stars have, that tells you you’re not seeing who you’re seeing but a persona. In that sense I find Kevin to be rather real as a person. I saw him panicking in a game show, doesn’t do things naturally to stake a place in the show, rather be in the background and frankly he does blend into the background a lot. I mean he is a handsome guy but not striking enough as a personality and you won’t notice he is there. He needs to learn how to create atmosphere, which doesn’t seem to be his personality or dress like a star (he has his good days, he has his really awful days) but attain the approachable behaviour. I sincerely believe he is that sort you can approach and ask for an autograph and he will sign with a smile on his face.

      1. Funn,

Maybe it’s the “mo soh wai” attitude that chase Charmaine away, since Charmaine is someone who knows where she’s heading and kevin seems to satisfy easily with little progression. Charmaine might demand kevin to have more properties just like herself but Kevin might opt for 1 house only..(example).

    1. Wow Funn,

Such deep and thoughtful analysis. I think u should just admit that u love him. 😛

      1. Yes Josie I do love him. Like I love Moses. I know why I love them and I know why I dislike them. Same with Charmaine.

      2. Ok, ok, I shall confess, yet again

        YES YES I LOVE HIM. I L-O-V-E KEVIN! I L-O-O-O-O-O-O-V-E KEVIN!!!!!!

But I don’t like his acting.

      3. Aww… that’s sweet.

I thought u liked his acting in BBJX?
Anyhow, at least he’s no longer a useless block of wood to u. So love does conquer all.

    2. One think I clearly remember about Kevin is something I read from a person’s blog. I want to translate that blog post but since it’s someone’s blog, it’s not appropriate to translate. The account was from a 3 party i.e. Wayne Lai. Wayne Lai recounted that he was upset/worried about something and everyone left the set already. Only Kevin stayed back and quietly accompany him. Kevin is not eloquent. So, he didn’t say many words. But, he just give his support by being there which Wayne appreciate.

      1. That’s why I say he is a decent guy. So I believe he would be a sensitive sort of person as well, and well mannered and looks like those sort that is very very difficult to offend which is good. Which works for being in a very temperamental industry but being so quiet, quiet integrity, quiet dignity, etc doesn’t work for being in the limelight. Could he be better as a director? More patient?

      2. I remember this news. Agreed that Kevin is a good guy but maybe because he’s got such a ‘whatever’ attitude (or maybe it’s more that he’s easily content) he fails to connect on an emotional level in his acting.

Funn, I don’t think he would be better as a director. As a director you need an opinion, a vision, and Kevin doesn’t strike me as that type. Maybe a producer or something?

      3. Kevin kind of reminds of me an Asian Keanu Reeves… quiet, mature, gentle. Looks like his would be wasted as a director or behind the scenes guy.

    3. I think I agree with what you’re trying to say about him as a person. He seems really awkward in big group settings or variety shows because he’s not quick on his feet and so he tends to try and not get any attention which is why people view him as boring or standoffish.
In the last few years, he seems to have let his guard down more and tries to be friends with his costars instead of keeping to himself. I was watching an interview with Jazz Lam and how he said that Kevin got him and the people who portrayed his siblings on A Fistful of Stances new cell phones for Xmas so that they can all keep in touch and was always really nice to him. Also, Kevin came in on his day off from filming Ghetto Justice to help Jazz out with his scenes. That’s why Jazz said that he will not be friends with anyone who talks badly about Kevin to him because he really does see him as a big brother. It was really touching. lol

      1. I think Kevin has always been nice to his co-stars and people he worked with. I can’t find that post now since I don’t remember which forum I read it in. It’s a few years back, way before the filming GJ. At that time, Kevin was still known to be a quiet guy and still remain quiet and let others take the lead in game shows. But, he will took the initiative to offer help to people. This incident was recounted by a behind the scene guy who work by contract. After his contract ended, he did not renew his contract with TVB because he had to go back to Mainland or something. Kevin approached him and gave him a contact of a person he knew that might be able to offer this guy work. He also asked the guy to call him if he needs help. (It was while I was looking for this post that I stumbled upon the blog post on Kevin that recount the Wayne Lai incident).

So, Kevin might be quiet, but, not unfriendly.

      2. I have always felt that Kevin is a nice person and I am glad that I am right…

    4. Very good analysis of Kevin – and I agree. He does strike me as a kind, pleaser type of man. And if he truly dated Charmaine, I can also see why they eventually “clashed” since she’s the absolute opposite.

Regarding his acting, he has the looks but has seriously little screen presence/charisma. Didn’t help that he was so wooden in the past either. It has gotten a lot better in the last couple of years but he did take his sweet time tbh. What I find curiously odd, is that he was so appealing to me, portraying the father yet so darn boring as the son in A Fistful Of Stances.

  7. Note that the face of Nikki Chow and her sister are famous for plastic surgery. so her beauty is not real…

  8. Kevin doesn’t give off that “pretty boy” vibe anymore. He has grown so much over the years.

  9. @ tin tin

Plastic or no plastic; I have never consider niki and her sister beautiful. Maybe above average.

  10. I know Kevin and Charmaine never admitted to dating, or perhaps, they never did get that far in the dating stage to consider a couple. But for sure, there were attractions, their chemistry was to crazy in FH2 that at times I got goosebumps watching them. But it was also obvious things went south, because I have a sense they were so uncomfortable with each other in the BTROC… their scenes together were weird. Never seen that Charmaine before. She’s a natural in the love scenes with all her male stars.

  11. Opps I just realized I replied to with the wrong response 😛

  12. Kevin is a gentleman from what his colleagues say of him and I think in his quiet way he has made a number of good friends. Kenneth Ma and Jazz Lam look to him as their big brother and of course there are the girls who simply adore him him, I think. Can’t run away from it as he’s so good looking. And now that his popularity is running high and if he wins the TVB Best Actor award, can you imagine what it will be like? This is when he can really pick and choose, but, with much discretion, I hope, and not make the wrong choice. So far he has been very prudent and manages to keep himself free from being tied down to any Mainland girl, unlike a number of the HK actors. In that way, and in many others, he is so mature and acts his age. He’s clever, and so he naturally wants someone who possesses his intelligence but again he must be careful not to get one who is too clever or that will certainly spell trouble! Well, let’s hope he gets the girl of his dreams. It’s still not too late. You know what, I’m still hoping for him and Charmaine to be together again, like some of you.

  13. My guts feeling say kevin will not end up with Charmaine. If they were compatible they wouldn’t have broken up after a few months of dating. Nonetheless, I prefer Kevin with Charmaine over Niki.

Charmaine is a very attractive as in how she presented herself: very mature/indenpendent/feminine.

Jenny Xu, Kevin last year rumored gf, I must say Im very disappointed in his choice of gf. How did he chose Jenny over Charmaine? What could he be thinking at that time…?

  14. Did Kevin really date Niki? I thought it was just rumors since the two have so much onscreen chemistry, and this was before I started following HK entertainment news.

I agree with Jayne. Kevin seems to have become much more relaxed and laid back since portraying Law Ba. He’s taken himself too seriously in the past, making it hard for him to portray many types of roles. I have reservations about saying portraying Law Ba has improved his acting though. I’ll wait to see him in another series before saying that. In his past roles, he usually seems a bit lost and out of place. GJ was the first series where he genuinely seemed to get into the role, and I commend him for that. I like relaxed and laid back Kevin more than “takes himself too seriously” Kevin. 🙂

  15. he’s very handsome !!! always thought he’s good looking but he was never my favorite hk male actor.

  16. Judy says:

Kevin kind of reminds of me an Asian Keanu Reeves… quiet, mature, gentle. Looks like his would be wasted as a director or behind the scenes guy.

I have to agree with Judy, he really reminded me of Keanu Reeves, even acting wise, do you guys feel that somehow these 2 actor has a charm. They don’t really have to act much but somehow, the body language speaks for themselves.

I am a super big fan of Keanu, and his boyish look and his stares and glances are somehow similiar to Kevin…

  17. They really should do a bachelor show with him… can you imagine how many girls would love to be in that show? (me for one) but I guess he may not want that…
