Ada Choi: “Popularity Doesn’t Last Forever”

Ada Choi (蔡少芬) has never been as happy as she is now in her life. In over twenty years’ time, Ada has managed to carve out a commendable acting career, start her own business, and have a loving husband and two lovable daughters. “My family has given me the joys of life!” She exclaimed.

Having spent nearly twenty years doing nothing else but acting, Ada has recently taken a break from her main career to focus on her new clothing business Motion Picture Kidswear, a designer clothing and accessories brand for children. Ada has designed some of the clothes herself.

On her new business, which she opened with two friends, Ada said, “I’m learning as I go along. It’s difficult, but very fun. I’ve learned a lot of things, like designing for example. At first I thought [designing] was simple – all you have to do is just draw a picture – but you also need to make models and measure the cloth. If you don’t have cloth, you can’t just go get some more. There are provisions of how much fabric you can purchase. The budget can increase. There’s a lot of knowledge behind it.”

Flowers never stay blossomed forever, and Ada understood long ago that her popularity was something that she could not always rely on. “I always felt like acting would not be the biggest part of my life. Even if I do work, most of the time it was just waiting [for scheduling]. In the past, I had to film ten productions per year to get my name out there and have more experience. It wasn’t really for the money. Right now, I have the ability to choose my projects. I don’t need to film the same things over and over again. You can’t earn all the money in the world, so it is most important to just enjoy life as it goes.”

Adding that she has no plans to retire her acting career to become a full-time businessperson, Ada said she lacks the skills to do so, and stressed that she will continue acting even if her popularity fades. “I love acting and I will continue doing it. I will not give it up. I really don’t want my business to affect my own career.” Adding that her family always comes first, Ada stated, “If there is a day when my husband tells me to care for our family full-time, then I will consider giving up [acting]. Other than that, not a chance.”

Max Zhang (張晉), Ada’s husband of five years, received greater recognition after starring in 2011’s The Grandmaster <一代宗師>. Ada nodded happily and said, “I am so happy for him. His career is going so well now, and that means more income for the family! I never even had a chance to film a Lunar New Year film, yet he did, and it’s one with Fat Gor (Chow Yun Fat 周潤發) too! I’m already happy when I see my friends doing well, let alone my other half! He has my full support. He is a workaholic, and it’s great to see him being finally satisfied with his work.”

Being more selective in her acting projects, Ada said she will try to film at least one to two dramas per year. Her focus will center around mainland China and Hong Kong. “I still have a two-year contract with TVB,” she said, tossing away the rumors that she is currently in talks to shoot an upcoming HKTV drama.

  1. The reality is all of these actors are famous with TVB…and that’s it! Once they leave TVB they lose their popularity with the crowds. They might get pay more in mainland China but that’s also where their popularity goes down. Charmaine Sheh is pretty smart to keep TVB part of her career.
