Nancy Wu Talks Fitness: “Accommodate Your Body”

2015 was a year of great satisfying change for TV Queen Nancy Wu (胡定欣), who not only starred in the year’s highest-rated Hong Kong television drama, but also won Best Actress for that same feat. The Ghost of Relativity <鬼同你OT> star is also in a stable relationship with music producer, Terry Chan (陳明道), finding success in both love and career.

But Nancy’s success story does not stop there. Since early last year, Nancy took up endorsing a health product, joined a celebrity running club, and became more engaged in fitness activities. Nancy, who goes to the gym at least twice a week, has gained some prominent biceps and a full row of abs. Her new muscular body has greatly contributed to her action-packed performances in the upcoming TVB dramas A Fist Within Four Walls <城寨英雄> and House of Spirits <一屋老友記>.

“I went to the gym every other day when I was shooting A Fist Within Four Walls,” said Nancy, who plays a skilled martial artist in the kung fu drama. “I also signed a contract with a new [health brand] around that time, so I had to put in extra effort. I worked harder in the gym then I did at work. If you have a clear goal in mind, you’ll find perseverance.”

Currently shooting the comedy drama You Who Came From the Meow Meow Star <來自喵喵星的妳>, Nancy no longer has to show off her physique, but she has maintained her schedule of going to the gym at least two times a week, and for two hours at a time.

But every body is different. Nancy’s current regime may be working for her, but it may not work for others. “Don’t blindly chase after perfection,” said Nancy. “Every body is different. We all have different body shapes, metabolism, and distribution of body fat. It’s better to get advice from a trainer, who can tell you which machine and which workout exercise would work best for you. Without a trainer, it’s easy to get yourself injured. Being muscular does not make you more beautiful. Being skinny doesn’t make you look better.”

Nancy, who has danced since a young age, has a lean body type with low body fat percentage. To accommodate her body type, she engages in an appropriate amount of exercise. She said, “I only started training in the first half of last year. My goal wasn’t to build more muscle, but to make them more defined. I remember I almost fainted on my first day of training, but now, both my fitness and my mental health have improved greatly. Train until it’s a suitable time for you to stop. Getting that perfect body requires a lifestyle change. Eating the right food is also very important.”
