Steven Ma Reveals Marriage Plans without Bride’s Family’s Approval
Acting for fifteen years, Steven Ma Chun Wai returned to film for TVB in 2005. Heavily promoted by TVB, Steven’s specialty is acting in ancient dramas. Earlier, he hosted a culinary show, Apprentice Chef <大廚出馬>. He also announced that he will also release a music album and book as well.
Experiencing a second peak in his career, the 39-year-old Steven suddenly revealed that he intends to marry his girlfriend, Vivian Hui Wai Ling, next year. The pair has been dating for seven years. Vivian comes from a wealthy background and owns a red wine wholesale business, supplying wine for five-star hotels and restaurants. Her family also owns a $50 million (HKD) property.
In 2006, the paparazzi photographed Steven and Vivian traveling together at Taipei airport. Vivian was carrying several Louis Vuitton bags at the time. To avoid public scrutiny, the pair often maintained their distance when spotted together. For many years, Steven insisted that they were just friends.
In March 2010, in the midst of Stephen Chan Chi Wan’s corruption scandal, Steven brought Vivian to a function for his series, Seven Days’ Separation <隔難七日情>. The media speculated that Steven publicly avowed his relationship with Vivian at the time in order to draw his distance from Stephen Chan. Steven announced at the time, “My love life is very stable. I am very happy!”
Did Not Ask Vivian’s Father for Hand in Marriage
Last week, Steven revealed that he intended to get married with Vivian in 2011. “Vivian is very mature. I am ill-tempered sometimes. Yet, she will not retaliate in words and would rather quietly let the storm subside. Of course, I will apologize to her afterwards. But fortunately, Vivian does not have a princess attitude!”
If Steven were to get married, he hopes to become a father at the same time. He does not mind if they have a child together first and then get married afterwards. “Actually, getting married is just wishful thinking on my part. I have not asked Vivian’s family yet. I am afraid that her father may say no!”
The 34-year-old Vivian studied Hotel Management in Australia. She is fluent in German, French, and Italian. After completing her university studies, she returned to Hong Kong. With her father’s assistance, she opened a red wine store called “Gin Gallery.”

Jayne: Vivian Hui appears to be a lovely woman. It sounds like Steven did not formally propose yet…shouldn’t he get her family’s permission before talking openly about this? He comes across as highly moody and can be a compulsive talker.
With this article, he already paved the road for himself. I don’t think the father-in-law to be will say ‘no’ to save face, so call. And, I am sure he wouldn’t be so explicit if he was not sure about it, but I personally would have asked first prior to coming out so publicly. How can one claim to be friend, then already dating for 7yrs and now marriage-that was quick:)

Sadly that is the problem these days. A guy and girl are caught togther in public acting all intimate so it is clear that they are “going out”. But when they are caught red handed, they claim to just be “friends”. Then when the truth finally comes out, they admit that they lied through their teeth all that time and then BOOM, then they get married. The end…
It is only the ignorant press and those who did not follow Steven’s news that didn’t know about Vivian.
In fact, those of us who followed his news knew as early as 2008 of Vivian, some fans have even taken to addressing her as sister-in-law by late 2009.
In 2006, when news of Vivian first surfaced, she was harassed by the press, so Steven took their relationship underground, as she and her mother were now harassed when the above news broke.
Steven had candidly revealed his steady love relationship as early as 2008 when he was on Eileen Cha radio program promoting AJCL. In 2009, much ado was made of his break up and made up with his red wine gf by the media.
As to this article, Steven, in his most VIP today interview, said that his words were taken out of context. He was asked of his future plans. Among the many plans he mentioned was his intention and desire to get married soon, yet to be formalised with a marriage proposal. But the interviewer selectively focused on that one particular marriage plan, and blow it out of proportion and context.
