Wayne Lai Suffers from Sleepless Nights Due to Surge in Popularity

As a three-time TV King, Wayne Lai’s (黎耀祥) earning power has skyrocketed in mainland China. In the last few years, Wayne attended at least two shows per week in mainland due to his popularity. In 2013 alone, he raked in approximately $18 million HKD in show fees alone – that is ten times the amount Wayne gets from filming TVB dramas!

However, his star-earning power comes at a price. In a recent show for a bar, Wayne suffered from a lack of sleep for 48 hours straight. He first attended his first midnight promotion at a bar and sang four different songs with the audience. After he finished his performance, Wayne hopped into a van and drove off to a second bar and repeated his mini concert. Since both bars were owned by the same owner, Wayne even accepted his fee at a discounted price – $500,000 HKD for both shows as opposed to $300,000 HKD each.

As if performing back to back was not tiring enough, Wayne had to head back to TVB at 6 a.m. to film. The Best Actor may have earned a considerable amount of money recently, but after suffering from no sleep, even Wayne admitted that he no longer has the energy to handle the work hours anymore.

Eccentric Pink Lady

While Wayne has been putting on non-stop performances, a particular lady in a low-cut pink top stood out above the rest. She was present during every one of Wayne’s shows and clung onto his arm every time. Her overly enthusiastic behaviour nearly made Wayne trip and fall down, causing him to exclaim, “Wow, do I see you everywhere I go?”

Saving Money For Son

Wayne joked that he works for his 16-year-old son, who is a sneaker enthusiast. Since his son is a teenager, Wayne turned down many mainland drama offers, including one where the compensation was 5 million RMB. Wayne said, “My son is 16 and is entering an important growth stage. I don’t want to see him every few months. With the current jobs I have right now, I can see him every other day or so. I don’t have many tens of years to spend; I rather work a little harder and save money for my son. I just hope that in the future, our lives will be better!”

  1. Good luck to you, Wayne. I know you really love your son. However, good money may not always get you a good son though. Sometimes it will spoil him because he doesn’t realize the value of money because too much money is already there for him to spend.

I heard that Wayne’s son, at the age of 16, already uses professional level of cameras as his hobby. Those cameras can easily cost HK$40,000 each.

  2. Sigh. This is bad precedent. For all the stars complaining about lack of sleep, I am sure their schedule is quite the same as Wayne’s and see the reason for lack of rest is not the filming but the outside job.

    1. but if you have the opportunity to earn more money wouldnt you then?i mean in hk its not easy to buy a house for yourself.

      1. kolo, of course he should but again it goes back to the many complaints about TVB working hours and the need to rest and then won’t you ever wonder if TVB lessen its working hours, these famous artistes will then fill those rest time with more engagements which in the end translate to not more resting time? And thus a tired artiste; whose fault is that in the end?

    2. That could be one of the reasons why the current artistes are not that good in acting because they spend too much time doing outside jobs and cannot concentrate in acting their roles.

      1. sandcherry perhaps it could be true. But I do acknowledge TVB does not give an actor much time to do research and preparatory work anyway.

    3. I am glad that Wayne has a lot of job opportunities outside, and also agree that he should take care of his health. Money is important, but so is health.

I know that Wayne is a very humble and kind actor that rarely says no for an answer, and that’s why I like about him. The hectic work is really the same in any tv station, there is really no stations that has less filming hours

  3. Constant overworking can lead to serious mental and physical health issues if it is for a prolong period. Wayne is astute enough to say enough is enough and moderate his schedule now. I hope his son is smart and understanding enough to know that his father is looking out for his well being and future.

    1. Totally agree and money is not everything. Overworking yourself is not healthy at all. I pulled many all nighters for graduate school and it was really painful but luckily I got to catch up on sleep right after it was over. However, Wayne and many artists do not seem to get that. I really wonder how they manage?? If it were me, I would just fall to the floor and fall asleep.

  4. Wayne said that he will take one month vacation after the drama “Man getting Married” completed. I think he knows how to take care of himself.

  5. That’s everyone should appreciate TVB and many people got fame because of TVB.
Useless HKTV trying to create trouble huh, never dream of it ah!
Btw Malaysia tvb awards , WONG CHO LAM, his acting and speaking skills are astonishing. hehe

    1. Wong Cho Lam is a good MC…he can think quickly on his feet. Much better than King Kong…don’t know why TVB insists to give him hosting gigs when he can’t speak properly.

      1. well, i think that King Kong intentionally talks like that on screen… personally, i kinda like his personality and charisma so i might be kinda bias in this… although he gets a lot of opportunities in hosting gigs, more often than not, he gets teased. kinda feel bad for him but i guess he’s already used to it. anyways, just an opinion 🙂

  6. Wayne lai should go to mainland to make money before too late.

  7. Just taking one TVB series a year and the rest time used for the events and dramas mainland then Wayne Lai will have enough both time and money to take care of his family and himself.

  8. The “Will Power” is really good. I like Wayne Lai’s acting; I am waiting for his new series.
