“Ruyi’s Royal Love in the Palace” Premieres August 20
It’s finally here! Qing dynasty epic Ruyi’s Royal Love in the Palace <如懿传> has premiered on August 20, dropping its first two episodes on Tencent Video today. The show will air two episodes a day from Monday to Thursday, starting at 8 pm. Hong Kong will be airing the show via myTV SUPER.
Starring Zhou Xun (周迅), Wallace Huo (霍建華), Janine Chang (張鈞甯), Angel Dong Jie (董洁), Xin Zhilei (辛芷蕾), Vivian Wu (邬君梅), and Sweet Li Qin (李沁), Ruyi’s Royal Love in the Palace had a tumultuous post-production stage. Initially slated for a late 2017 release, Ruyi’s airdate was pushed back numerous times before finally settling with a broadcast date that is one year after its original confirmed time.
Fans are ecstatic that the wait is over, and news media is happy to confirm that they can finally report on the drama. Wallace’s wife, fellow actress Ruby Lin (林心如), is just as excited as everyone else, and the actress updated her social media to promote the show.
Ruyi’s Royal Love in the Palace is based on the novel The Legend of Ruyi, sequel to The Legend of Zhen Huan <后宫·甄嬛传>, which itself was made into a successful television drama back in 2011.

Saw the two eps already. So far Vivian Wu rules as Empress Dowager Zhen Huan. No one else seems to have made an impact on me yet.
Watched the first 2 episodes and so far, I’m enjoying Wallace’s presence! Story at the beginning seems to me slightly too brief but i guess it’s a quick explanation to what’s happening next in the palace haha. I’m also liking the production effort and quality- costumes and royal etiquette
It’s an 88 episodes drama…longer than The Legend of Zhen Huan. With Story of Yanxi Palace just coming to it’s end, and another longer palace scheming drama is taking over…i wonder if there are others like me who finds it hard to watch the same category of long drama back to back.
I’m definitely not going to watch this very soon, or perhaps not going to watch it at all if the reception is not as good as its prequel.
Saw the trailer, must say I was impressed when Zhou Xun in it. Felt that Wallace Huo looks more at ease in this drama than Hua Qian Gu. However, never a fan of Emperor Qian Long (the historical figure) so probably will give this a miss.
Just saw EP 1. All veterans were amazing. Fashion old fashioned. Series gives me a CCTV vibe from a decade ago. Not good vibe. Wallace Huo is dubbed but he did well even if he is a miscast. But the worst was Zhou xun who did not impress me. She is far too old to play the young girl. Her face looked botoxed and puffy and she could hardly form an expression. That silly bow around her neck didn’t help. But the absolute worst was her toneless voice. Devoid of any emotion. Just EP 1 and I am starting to feel series is heading towards disaster because Zhou xun is an absolute miscast. It would have been much better if younger actors did the roles for the first few episodes and later taken over by the older actors. It felt so weird looking at her. I mean in yanxi charmaine when wasnt her best. She couldn’t bring out her characters pain and anger and all that stuff. But that’s charmaine sheh. She is not an amazing actress to begin with. But Zhou xun was worse because she really was toneless and expressionless. I thought sun li would have killed the character and maybe more chemistry with Wallace.
Wallace himself didn’t give a princely kingly vibe. Both versions of total opposite have its major flaws but so far yanxi is far more pleasant to watch in that sense.
Ruyi EP 1 is a total disappointment because further on those veterans have to make way for the younger ones and the younger ones are forgettable thus far.
By the way bad timing to air a similar story with yanxi so soon and so long winded when we know what happened.

LOL! What you say is so true, Zhou Xun really does not cut it at all (the young girl character). If it was years ago I have no problem with her. When she was in Red Sorghum she was still at least ok and matched it but now, it gets so funny. For a mature old looking man like Wallace, Zhou Xun happen to look even older, and matches to play his mom already. And the voice haha, that got me, the voice made it even extra funnier. I couldn’t stop laughing, it was just funny. Not only that it sounded old…it’s also, very very emotionless. I am still a Zhou Xun fan. I just don’t think she should’ve taken such a role like this. I seriously thought it was going to be good character at first, based on the trailer. So I was anticipating this show. At the very least I would have appreciate if they were willing to pay somebody to dubb her.
Maybe this is why she appeared only once or twice in the trailer, and was only shown with the angles where she looked good. In the real movie…eh heheh?
The story seems a bit too far fetched from history, 1st empress was really cherished by the emperor, while 2nd empress was ignored and her tomb was even worse than a commoner. Hard to imagine 2nd empress as the first most loved girlfriend ever. Wallace character was a bit more like a rich carefree boy, unlike a prince or a king. Quick judgment to say already, afterall Yu Zheng won his palace drama competition this year.
@funnlim Haha! Everything you said is spot on! To me, Zhou Xun and Wallace are really miscasts! Compare Ruyi wih Yanxi..Yanxi can easily win 9 streets away…

Zhou Xun and Wallace made big news last year when it was revealed they were paid record salaries for their roles in Ruyi. With so many negative reviews, they should return half of their salary.
@msxie Actually the salary is not that high considering it is Qing period dramas (Wallace have to shave his hair) and the episode supposed to be 99 episodes. From what I know each were paid around 50 millions that translate to around 500.000 yuan per episodes.
Hopefully it’ll be as good as Zhen Huan or even better but the only thing is we all know it’s going to sadly be a tragic ending.
The eps after Ruyi returns to the palace are much better than the initial two, but the story is not all that refreshing.
You still have the Empress/Empress Dowager trying to control the harem by pitting the concubines against each other, still have stupid young concubines thinking they can get away with insulting the higher-ranked consorts, emperor sleeping with a lot of women, innocent concubine trying not to sleep with emperor, stupid maids who speak their minds without thinking of the consequences, etc….
The good thing is that there are not any miscarriages yet but suspect they will be coming soon.
And I am not enjoying the songs either. They are nicely sung and the music is nice but the melody is very forgettable.
I feel bad for Ruyi since the drama was wrought with difficulties in getting an air time, but it really loses to Yanxi, which is already deep into its story. It makes getting into Ruyi difficult right now since it’s just starting out and therefore not as exciting. And I do agree with others who have said Zhou Xun is seriously miscast. She DOES look too old, even older than Wallace Huo, and it doesn’t help that she sounds like an 80 year old woman. I know she is known for her distinctive voice, but it’s just really jarring listening to her and trying to think of her as a young girl. It’s like, she already looks older so combine that with her voice it just completely ruins the illusion. They really should have cast someone younger…and being up against Yanxi kind of reemphasizes that point since Wu Jin Yan is pretty perfect for her role. Or at least, they should have dubbed over Zhou Xun’s voice to make her sound younger. I think people were complaining about Charmaine Sheh being too old for her role in Yanxi; I think Zhou Xun is 10X worse in Ruyi.
Cannot really comment much since haven’t watch it. But cannot wait to watch it.
