Ariel Lin, Vin Zhang in “Legend of Hua Buqi”
Fans of Ariel Lin can look forward to her performance in the upcoming iQiyi period drama.
It has been five years since her last period drama Prince of Lan Ling <蘭陵王>, and Taiwanese actress Ariel Lin (林依晨) is set to sizzle up screens with the highly anticipated wuxia drama Legend of Hua Buqi <小女花不棄> in January 2019. The youthful-looking 36 year-old actress imbues a cheeky and vivacious aura to her character Hua Buqi, and portrays not just the saccharine joys of first love but also deep patriotism and selfless passion for her country. In the drama, Ariel pairs up with Mainland Chinese star Vin Zhang (張彬彬) of Eternal Love <三生三世十里桃花> fame.
Based on a novel of the same name, the drama focuses on Hua Buqi, a wanderer who is approached by dubious characters who wish to exploit her for influence and benefits. Unfortunately embroiled in political and power tussles, Buqi and her ninth uncle are hunted by killers. Buqi escapes a tragic end thanks to a heroic rescue by a mysterious masked man, whom she develops good feelings for. On his deathbed his uncle instructs Buqi to go into the capital and look for a “Mister Zhu”.
Entering the capital, Buqi is taken in by Seventh Wangye as his “daughter”, but Buqi soon realizes that he is in fact her father’s murderer. In order to avenge her father, Buqi forges an identity as the daughter of the Jiangnan Zhu family, and through her intelligence and perseverance propels the family’s finances to become the richest in Jiangnan.
Through numerous encounters with Chen Yu (played by Vin Zhang), she realizes that he is her masked savior; romance quickly develops between the two. When Seventh Wangye’s ambitions of power are revealed, Buqi collaborates with Dongfangshi to thwart his plans. Buqi sacrifices love to save her motherland and Dongfangshi eventually defeats him, winning peace at last for the ordinary folks.
The Legend of Hua Buqi will premiere on January 8, 2019 on iQiyi’s platform.

@summer I also have the same thought when I first watched her, however, her acting is pretty good, and she does look a lot better on screen or maybe because she acts well that her beauty shines through lol.
But I’m with jjwong on this, at first I was excited to see her back, but after reading the plot, I’m like pass. They try to make it different by making her ugly and a beggar, but she’s hardly ugly, and didnt stay beggar that long -.- and the one she’s in love with is the next in line for the throne -.- *facepalm* so much for being different.

Ok, this plot is slightly different from the one I read, the one I read said she’s time travel, but basically same stuffs, still boring lol xD
Finally he’s acting with a different actress that knows how to act… except isn’t this a different plot I read a completely different synopsis.
Don’t have an issue with her, as long as she isn’t acting someone pretty/beautiful.
Rather see her than a pretty face with awful acting (aka Angelababy).
However, doubt will watch this, the synopsis doesn’t sound interesting.
She’s ok. Can act. But the storyline sounds boring. I am more interested in zanilias story of Ming lan. But 70 EPs and what nots is putting me off.
@funnlim why are you interested in it may I ask? Because plot wise, it seems pretty stock standard. Plus being super long. Apart from wanting to watch it for your favourite actress/actor, I’m not seeing the appeal (at first I was kinda interested but then read a few article on it being like Wei young, become lost interest lol)
@littlefish Totally agree, this drama sounds like a typical boring story but Ming Lan sound even worse because it is exactly like Wei Young. Some fans explain that it won’t be the same, but I watched the first week’s episodes and it is totally Wei Young. 2 evil sisters bullying cinderella storyline.
Plus, ZLY likes to pull on those modern fake-ish laughing techniques (that I usually see YM doing) that is really unlike a proper ancient woman.
Not quite standard. So far reviews are good and frankly I don’t like the actors. But the story of an underdog girl who is unloved and unwanted who rises to the occasion sounds interesting. This ariel’s series seems convulated. Maybe the summary isn’t well written, I don’t find it interesting.
@funnlim yea, I heard it has good reviews but seem to be mostly from ZLY’s fans, while the rating isn’t that great (so far the trend is going down, though they stop reporting rating after ep6). The media is trying to get audiences to watch it though. Though 70, and there isn’t a love triangle either, so not sure how they drag it to 70, and reading from some book fans, the drama already skip what could be good material from the book
@funnlim also isn’t it sound like a lot of tvb series back then? Got married into a rich house, totally unloved, raise to the occasion and then become the love of the main male lead’s life. Minus a lot of the scheming and back stabbing, tomorrow never die spring to mind lol

To be honest, I’ve never been able to finish watching any drama with Ariel Lin in it. She’s not exactly my cup of tea onscreen. But I hear her acting skills are at least commendable, so I don’t hate on her. Angelababy is neither pretty to me nor can she act. No redeeming value.

I liked the beginning of LLW but I dropped towards the end because it became total garbage. But ISWAK and Little Fairy still have really high rewatching value. They are quite standardized that no remakes can surpass. I liked her really much in ROCH too, love the cute natural hair line.
She looks better in modern. Still good looking in ancient as well but her mouth and chin was weird when I first saw her in ancient style. It took me some time to get used to it. At least she never do plastic surgery to get rid of them, I appreciate that. Once you’re used to her looks, you just find her very pretty. Her acting skills are exceptional, she’s not afraid of making funny and ugly faces on screen when her character requires it so she always comes off very convincing.
@davy ISWAK was so childish and cringey for me that I couldn’t even finish more than 2 episodes. A lot of people found her adorable in that, but I was turned off by her immature character and her looks.
At least in this new drama, she looks decent (better than her previous projects imo), but the plot sounds lame. So I can’t say I’m looking forward to this.
@coralie Yep, ISWAK is extremely childish, the purpose of that show is all for comedy and just for laugh. Nothing serious at all, it’s just funny watching how stupid she is. I don’t find her adorable being dumb, but she comes off very naturally funny.
After reading the comments, I can say I’m pretty shocked LOL. I guess beauty standards *really* differ between asians living in the US (which I boldly, But Carelessly, assume that most readers of jaynestars fall in this category) and asians living in an asian country (me)
I always thought Ariel Lin is extremely pretty, but Angelababy is boring-pretty (meaning I can tell that she is physically pretty but not my cup of tea). I also know of a lot of guys who consider Ariel Lin their female celebrity crush, but haven’t heard of Angelababy as a guy’s choice. It’s really interesting how different societies alter our perception of beauty, huh?
@linda Anyway, she looks way better in ancient dramas than in modern dramas. She looked the best IMO in Tian Wai Fei Xian (Little Fairy) because she was younger there (AND in ancient costume)
@linda the thing about Ariel is that she can be quite sexy, she know how to kiss, maybe because she has such thick lips, it’s aluring?!
AB on the other hand can’t kiss at all lol. Her kissing is like that of a dead fish slap on the actor’s lips, quite uncomfortable to watch xD
