What Lisa Tse’s Childhood in Scotland Was Like
Due to the political landscape in Hong Kong, many locals are considering emigrating to other countries and the United Kingdom has become a popular choice. The newest episode of TVB talk show, Young and Restless <後生仔傾吓偈>, discussed life in Scotland and the episode appears to be tailor made for Miss Hong Kong winner, Lisa Tse (謝嘉怡), who grew up in Scotland.
The other guests were very curious and discussed their knowledge of popular Scottish cultural references such as kilts, Scotch eggs, and the Loch Ness Monster. However, it turns out that they were most interested and envious of the educational system.
While growing up, Lisa had a very carefree education with lots of flexibility. There was a great balance between school and life, and she was able to play every day after school. She would use about 15 minutes every night to complete her homework and students only received about one to two assignments each week. When she was a child, she did not have to attend any tutoring classes, and she learned French when she was 10 years old. Lisa actively played soccer until she was 15 years old. Lisa’s father wanted Lisa to compete in Miss Hong Kong, so he prevented her from taking part in such tomboyish activities such as soccer.
As there are many universities in Scotland, there is no need to go through a standardized exam and compete for a spot like in Hong Kong. The cost of university education is about £3000 British pounds and as Lisa studied to become a nurse, the government covered the cost. Though she joined the ski club in university, Lisa was unable to partake in many activities since the course load for nursing was quite demanding.
Another perk in living in Scotland is that travelling within Europe is quite cheap. For £300 British pounds, Lisa was able to travel for a week including the cost of food and lodging. Lisa would seek a new place to explore every year, she likes travelling to Australia the most because she can ski.

what a relaxed childhood. even in the us, school is not like that in order to get into a descent college. don’t know about nursing schools but medical schools for doctors are very competitive. she just made it sound like it is such a breeze becoming a nurse but no sure how true that is in scotland or elsewhere in the world.

the hospitals are still open. i know someone is doing her residency in john hopkins, her first year.
Every time I see Lisa with the other 2 runners-up, the thing that strikes me is how short she is standing betw them. I dont see her getting very far career-wise as an actress. She just doesn’t stand out.

people really like her for her exotic looks. i think she will fare well since i can’t think of any mixed race in hk. look at diliraba, she’s faring very well and she looks nothing like rest of costars. i feel that asian audiences are now able to accept mixed race faces not like the past.
@m0m0 not if her acting is as bad as Grace Chan’s. She doesn’t come across as glamorous or exotic, pretty in a girl-next-door way but not outstanding and too short.

Dilraba stands out with her looks and is drop-dead gorgeous, so she’s able to rise above the rest even though she doesn’t have ethnic Han appearances. Moreso, she speaks fluent standard Mandarin as she’s born in China.
This girl looks like your average girl-next-door type of who is mixed and speaks Cantonese with a very thick accent. Unless TVB starts dubbing their dramas as the mainland does, this girl is going nowhere.

i agree w/ the short part. i was quite surprised that she won champion given her height. people keep on saying that she’s very well grounded

and I haven’t even touched on her ability to act yet. Dilraba can act albeit not amazing, but good enough that it’s acceptable and that the Mainland audience does not find annoying.
With TVB’s recent track record of training new artists, Lisa’s acting won’t be leaving much to desire. In the last 20 years, TVB has not developed a single good actor.
You can’t have good actors when you acquire them based on looks(beauty contests) not acting ability. They might be a few that can be acceptable but it’s few and far between. The standards of the contestants are also dropping. So it’s a no-win situation.

Agree with you completely! I never thought pageants were a great place to discover new talent. With a few exceptions, most HK pageant contestants historically have never been able to act. This is a fact.
It boggles my mind why TVB still continues to scout new talent primarily from pageants while they are bringing back Mr. HK.
She is really enchanting. Not just her looks; there’s something so refreshing about her. I am guessing that a Prince Charming will come along soon to sweep her off her feet….. Personally I think acting will be a bit of a struggle for her not least because of the language. I imagine her Her Scottish-accented English will also be harder to cast. I don’t think height (or the lack thereof) is a downside in or of itself though….
