Bobby Au Yeung Reminisces Benz Hui

Hong Kong actor, Benz Hui (許紹雄), passed away on October 28, 2025 after a battle with kidney cancer. He was 76 years old. His funeral was held earlier at Po Fook Memorial Hall in Tai Wai, followed by a cremation ceremony. Family members and close friends gathered to bid their final farewell.

Following the ceremony, Bobby Au Yeung (歐陽震華) spoke to the media, reminiscing about their years of friendship. Bobby said, “Benz was my senior–he was ten years older than me. He was in the first TVB Artiste Training Class and I was in the eleventh. Benz, Michael Miu (苗喬偉) and I became great friends after filming Dicey Business <賭場風雲>.”

Bobby saw Michael and his wife Jamie Chik (戚美珍) at the funeral service, adding that he and Michael were among those helping carry Benz’ coffin. Jamie said her happiest memories were watching the trio film Dicey Business and she was surprised that life had unexpectedly mirrored the series’ plot. Hearing this, Bobby became emotional. “Life really does imitate art. In Dicey Business, Benz’s character died first. We filmed it in 2005, which was almost 20 years ago. I hope he went to a place he really wants to go. It must be like that.”

Reflecting on their time working together, Bobby said Benz’ talent was unmatched.
“Before filming Dicey Business, I thought that I could handle a lot of things because I was the star. But standing next to Benz, I was humbled. He was extraordinary–everything he did worked. He was hardworking, reliable, and truly one of a kind. I was talking to producer Chung Shu Kai (鍾樹佳) who attended the service, and he was lamenting the loss of an actor capable of creating a character that the audience could become completely immersed in. Any drama or film with Benz in it was guaranteed strong ratings or box office. He brought joy to so many people.”

Speaking about their personal friendship, Bobby said actors often grow close during filming but see each other less afterward. At one point, Bobby and Benz did see each other more regularly through the TV Artists’ Soccer Team, where Benz served as chairman and they would play every week. In recent years, they mostly met at events.

Bobby said he had no knowledge of Benz’ illness, “I don’t know if he was hiding his illness on purpose, but I feel that he is the type to not want people to bother him and not trouble others. He’s similar to me in that sense.”

Bobby described Benz as positive and generous about life. Their last private gathering was more than a year ago over a meal. Bobby recalled the shock of receiving a call from Luisa Letao (黎芷珊) and Charmaine Sheh (佘詩曼) urging him to visit Benz in hospital. Bobby said, “I had just woken up and immediately rushed to the hospital. I couldn’t believe how serious it was. I had recently watched videos of Benz laughing and bantering while playing video games with his daughter. It reminds us to cherish the people around us and live each day with joy.”
