Donnie Yen to Star in Comedy with Carina Lau, Louis Koo, and Angelababy

Media Asia’s most popular  martial arts star, Donnie Yen Chi Dan, has become a mainland box office magnet. Although his filming fee has increased astronomically to $25 million (Yuan), Donnie continues to be in high demand. Recently, Raymond Wong Pak Ming convinced Donnie to star in comedy, All’s Well, Ends Well 2011 <至強囍事 2011>. In All’s Well, Ends Well 2011, Donnie will portray a make-up artist and have a romantic relationship with model, Carina Lau Ka Ling. This will be the only film in his career where Donnie will not have any fighting sequences. Louis Koo will also portray a make-up artist.

The new All’s Well, Ends Well 2011 will be directed by Chan Hing Ka and released during the same time as the sequel to TVB’s 72 Tenants of Prosperity <72家租客>. Since All’s Well, Ends Well 2010 <花田囍事 2010> lost box office sales to 72 Tenants of Prosperity last year, Raymond has strengthened the cast by adding Donnie Yen, Carina Lau, Louis Koo Tin Lok, Lynn Hung Dai Lam, and Angelababy in the new movie. Mainland actress, Yan Ni, will pair with Raymond Wong.
Since the success of Ip Man <葉 問>, each of Donnie’s subsequent films have grossed over $100 million (Yuan) in China . Last year his filming fee was $15 million (Yuan), which has increased to $25 million (Yuan) this year. Allegedly, Raymond Wong will be paying Donnie $15 million (Yuan) for only ten days of filming for All’s Well, Ends Well 2011.

After completing Peter Chan’s Wu Xia <武俠> in Yunnan , Donnie will return to Hong Kong to film All’s Well, Ends Well 2011. In November, he is scheduled to film the $300 million project, <大鬧天宮>. In a telephone interview, Donnie said, “I would like to film a comedy and test the strength of my comic skills.”

Raymond Wong said, “Earlier, my mother passed away, so I did not have time to plan the production details for All’s Well, Ends Well 2011. I decided to cast Donnie Yen because he has potential in comedies. I also know that he is interested in changing his image and film comedies. In Ip Man, he can fight against ten people at the same time. In the new film, he will play a make-up artist who can apply make-up for ten models at the same time.”

Regarding Donnie’s filming fee, Raymond said, “Let’s not discuss it, otherwise people will say I elevated the fees in the industry! Each time I produce a Lunar New Year film, I put forth a large investment because I want to produce a quality film.” Raymond also mentioned that if Sandra Ng Kwan Yu were not pregnant, he may cast her in the film too.

Jayne: Donnie Yen in a comedy? Are they trying to promote his softer side to appeal to women?

  1. Donnie is actually very funny. I won’t go so far into saying his as funny as he is a good fighter though.

I’m excited to see this. And I really hope Raymond Wong beats Eric Tsang. I grew up watching Raymond Wong’s work and am very much in love with him. He’s got an eye for talent and it’s unfortunate he had such a rough time at his peak. That probably contributed to his disconnection with the audience as well.

My only complaint with Raymond is – he always include himself in the cast and I honestly don’t think he should anymore. He was great in the 80s with Happy Ghost but that age is over now.

Regardless – I’m casting my vote for All Well Ends Well.

  2. Raymond Wong’s latest installments of All’s Well Ends Well aren’t good. I found myself preferring 72 Tenants over AWEW2010, although both movies doesn’t sit high on my book.

But Donnie Yen in a comedy? I think the mere sight of him “in a comedy” can be amusing already 😛

  3. Donnie already show his softer side by playing a piono piece in a concert/variety show. 😀

Somehow, I feel that Donnie will do well in this comedy. I don’t know. He has always been a decent actor to me, even before Ip Man when everyone else start acknowledging is acting skill.

I agree with Masaharu of All’s Well Ends Well vs 72 Tenants. I also find 72 Tenants more enjoyable than All’s Well.

Eric Tsang is underrated as a producer. The movies he producer always have certain among of standard and good quality. So, I’m not surprised 72 Tenant turn out well.

  4. I really like Louis. He is great in any kind of movie, action, drama and comedy (remember Rob B Hood? So funny!)Carina and Donnie are both good actors. But Angelababy, to me, she is only looks. She really needs to work on her acting. She is still young, she has time. Instead of Angelababy I would like to see some other actress, like Zhang Jingchou for example.

How is she going to work on her acting without anyone giving her a chance and platform to work on it?
You want her to work on her acting, then, you suggest that another actress should replace her. If there’s no practice, how to be perfect?

I’ve only watched Angelababy in one movie, i.e. ‘Hot Summer Days’ and I find her pretty good in it. If that’s her debut performance, she certainly has potential.

  6. Angelababy looks fake. It’s open secret that she had plastic surgery but some people look ok and natural with it but she looks too much like a plastic doll.

  7. Kidd…What she needs is to take some acting classes before she can actually be in a movie with actors like Carina and Louis. She is not going to become better until she takes some classes. Since she is not a born talent then she should better take some classes because that is what less talented people should do in order to be better. She can’t expect to become a talented actress when she has no knowledge on that and is no natural talent… And Hot Summer days was her third movie, if my memoe=ry serves me correctly and I didnt like her performance…Anyways, she is pretty and could work on it if she wants.

  8. You liked her perfomance, but did anybody else (mainly the critics) like it? I liked the movie so much, but the scene at the train station was so lousy, I was really expecting sth more.

  9. Hot Summer Days isn’t her first movie, I think A Short of Love was her debut and she was nothing special there.

However she’s quite nice in AWEW2010 and did better in comedy than Lynn Xiong. She was likeable too in Hot Summer Days, I like her character. She needs to improve more but I find her presence in movies cute and likeable. Whatever she did to her get the appearance or whoever she’s dating is her business :).

Well, Masaharu did, and this critic did too.

    Quote from the review.
“Surprisingly, the most balanced story of the bunch is the one between Angelababy and Jing Boran. The usually glamorous model sheds her hip image here to play an innocent village girl, and she shows enough comic timing and acting ability to make her underdeveloped character a convincing romantic target. “

This reviewer also likes her performance.

The scene at the train station was decent imho. Not an award winning performance but adequate.

In case you assume, I didn’t like Angelababy’s performance because I like Angelababy. It’s ‘Hot Summer Days’ that made me like Angelababy. Before that, she was just another leng mo to me and I didn’t even know she’s Angelababy until
    I check the credit.
