Fabienne Kwan on Her Unfair Advantage in Miss Hong Kong 2021

A favorite in this year’s Miss Hong Kong competition, Fabienne Kwan (關楓馨) is being accused of using her father’s stardom to her advantage and making it unfair for other contestants.

In the semi-finals, Fabienne invited her father, actor Eddie Kwan (關禮傑), on stage as a guest during her piano performance. Although she was charismatic and put on a great performance, many netizens criticized Fabienne for pulling the “famous father” card.

In an interview, Fabienne explained, “My father didn’t help me; I played the piano by myself. I previously talked to other contestants about this, and we thought we could bring a little surprise to the stage during the semi-finals!”

Denying she used her father to boost her popularity, Fabienne said, “I think everyone thinks differently. Some people may love it; others may not. However, I’ve learned my lesson and I probably won’t do this next time.”

Regarding the controversy over Fabienne’s onstage appearance with her father, the coordinating manager for Miss Hong Kong, Ho Siu Wai (何小慧), explained that it was part of the performance storyline and did not comment on the issue further.

In response to former contestant Chloe Leung (梁允瑜) having been caught swearing on camera, Ho Siu Wai said TVB hopes to assist her debut in the entertainment industry despite her earlier elimination from the pageant.

During the semi-finals, two contestants were pitted against each other in a battle of words. Yvette Chan (陳聖瑜), who went against Sabina Song (宋宛穎), gave a wonderful performance. In response to her quick wit and eloquent response that night, Yvette humbly said, “I never thought it would be like this – I only knew that I had a very short amount of time to come up with a great answer. I’m so lucky that the results were so good.”

Overall, the Miss Hong Kong 2021 semi-finals averaged 18.6 points in viewership ratings and peaked at 19.9 points. In comparison to previous shows that were in the same timeslot, the pageant ratings were 5.1 points higher.

  1. That does seem rather cheeky but will it really help her win, that is still debatable… If she win, it will likely be due to her own merits..

  2. I don’t think she will win, but will probably place. Her tvb contract is probably already printed lol. Honestly does it really matter if you are first second or third or fourth? Most are just looking for a fast pass to become an artiste.
Yvette really has that tvb look. She looks like Karena Ng + Kayan C (the YouTuber who competed in miss HK)

    1. It doesnt really matter if you are 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, etc. For ex, Kathy Chow didnt even make it to the finals. There have been many cases where those that dont place become more famous & get more opportunities than winners. I agree that joining the pageant is a fast pass to become an artiste. Miss HK reminds me of shows like The Bachelor & The Bachelorette. I feel like the participants arent there to find true love. They want to become famous & make $ as an influencer after the show ends. Yvette is similar to Kayan C in that she is an influencer also.

    2. I have noticed that those who don’t win tend to have a more successful career than the winners. It may be the case with her and she has her dad’s connections too.

  3. i think she’s in a tough competition this year, there are a few very beautiful girls unlike other years. though i think she stands out on her own but not as the most outstanding few…. she is indeed quite beautiful and got a good personality. regardless, i think being an offspring of a famous celebrity does help her to get more attention but at the same time, it is quite high pressure to not live up to people’s expectation. i think she will fare well, given what i have seen, even if she doesn’t win champion, i think she will win something and will get to film in tvb in the near future.

    1. I think last year’s top 4 are much prettier than this year’s top 12. Fiona & Anna are the prettiest of this year, but got eliminated.

  4. If she wins it will be due to her merits. Going in we all knew offspring of the famous would draw headlines like this. In my opinion, she’s okay and fits the bill… So, If she she gets placed, great! And if she doesn’t get placed she will just win more recognition.

  5. She doesn’t looks Chinese maybe more like mixed with other race such as Thai? Philippine? Cambodia? Or Indonesia? I am imagine other famous actors children going to join the Miss and Mr. Hong Kong next. Well if she doesn’t win maybe she signed with Tvb her father can teach her more about acting.

  6. I think Fabienne is very pretty, confident and comfortable on screen. Even if she does not win a place, I do want to see more of her. I am a huge fan of her father but I think she has been doing a great job in the competition so far.
