Hu Ge: “I’m No Longer Beautiful”

Mainland Chinese actor Hu Ge (胡歌), who turned 32 in September, recently talked with The Beijing News about his newest drama, Sound of the Desert <風中奇緣>, his views on being an actor as opposed to an idol, and his hopes for his future career endeavors.

The period romance drama, Sound of the Desert, which also stars Cecilia Liu (劉詩詩) and Eddie Peng (彭于晏), began broadcasting on Hunan Satellite TV on October 1. In the series, Hu Ge portrays a disabled doctor named Mo Xun, whose handsome features are sure to remind fans of the dashing hero Li Xiaoyao in Chinese Paladin <仙劍奇俠傳>, which is widely considered Hu Ge’s most recognizable role.

For Hu Ge, however, Sound of the Desert will likely mark the end of his idol drama career. “I’m actually a little older than the character in the original novel,” he admitted. “I’ve already gone through my time as a youth, and I’m no longer beautiful.

“I’ve acted in many ancient idol dramas already, and everyone has seen the handsome and beautiful side of me,” he went on to say. “I want to let everyone see other sides of me.”

Hu Ge’s next project, a modern drama titled Whirlwind of Eleven <旋風十一人>, is sure to fulfill his wish. In it, he plays a soccer instructor who was a former professional athlete. However, due to fixed matches and injuries, he hit rock bottom in life and is now teaching soccer at a school.

The most surprising thing about the drama? Hu Ge’s goatee. “This is the first time I’ve had facial hair for an entire drama,” he said.

Hu Ge also shared that he had wanted to shave off his goatee, in order to appear younger, before accepting his People’s Choice Award at the Seoul International Drama Awards in early September, but he was not allowed to. Even worse, when he went on stage, he got so nervous that he forgot all of the Korean that he had previously prepared.

Despite the minor setback, Hu Ge is set to have the world view him as a bona fide actor, even if that means growing out a goatee that makes him look old. “Actors can’t be merely eye candy,” he reasoned, “otherwise they would just be models. Actors need to get viewers to resonate with them.”

    1. For a moment, I thought he looked 45 or something in that picture.

      1. He looks GOOD and thankfully doesn’t have a baby face.

  1. I don’t think I ever find him handsome or attractive type. He’s average though yes, his face structure does make him look way older than his age

    1. wow, i totally agree lol i dont find him handsome or attractive :/ he looks weird to me

    2. Yes. I agreed you that I never find him handsome or attractive either. I think this style (above picture) fits him a little bit better. I do love his singing in BBJX.

  2. Personally, I find him to be quite “pretty” when he was young during Chinese Paladin (I don’t really like him at that time lol) but ever since his accident, he lost his youthfulness and develop a certain level of maturity which I really like. I admire his decision to move away from idol drama and focus more on challenging role. Honestly, he does not age very well but am I the only one finding his new image with the goatee quite manly and hot?

    1. i am with you on that, he look cute in Paladin 1 & Yang warriors, his mature look now makes him handsome! I do like the goatee on him too! I think he is a good actor and best of luck to him in his next project!

    2. I have never thought hu ge to be beautiful or handsome. I think yuan hong fits that description more and hu he is just good looking. But I do like hu ge’s acting and charisma. Looking forward to his Nirvana on fire series.

  3. I want to watch whirlwind of eleven.

But I like his older look too, he is still ‘beautiful’ to me, if using the English term.

  4. Actually, he’s never that unattractive looking but above he does look OLD now.
I remember him w/that Crystal Liu girl in that ancient drama i glimpsed thru and he was cute in there just as CL was super cute in there too. But it appears he picked even ugly roles lately due to whatever reason. There was a series he was on and he was paired up w/a woman old enough to be his mom not to mention she is the ‘see lai’ type so i mean its a show about cougar and a younger man but boy was that cast horrific.

    1. the woman you are deriding as ‘old enough to be his mom’ was only 6 years older than Hu Ge’s character. The nasty old aunties in that drama who were biased and prejudiced about her age is in the same vein as your unkind comments.

  5. He has an ordinary face but the above look suits him well cos it makes him look more charismatic.
