Jessica Hsuan and Myolie Wu Film “King of Ten Thousand Phoenixes”

After witnessing the ratings success of Can’t Buy Me Love <公主嫁到>, TVB quickly arranged the filming of a Qing version,King of Ten Thousand Phoenixes <萬凰之王>, featuring Jessica Hsuan, Myolie Wu Hang Yee, and Sunny Chan Kam Hung.

King of Ten Thousand Phoenixes will be a 2011 grand production series. Myolie will portray an evil empress and be pitted against Jessica, who plays a concubine. Many scenes will feature the pair arguing and matching their wits against each other while fighting for emperor, Sunny’s, favor. The two actresses will display their formidable acting in many such scenes.

On the day of the filming, the weather was very hot and Jessica had to repeatedly wipe the sweat off her face. During a filming break, Myolie carefully recited her dialogue. Sunny sat to the side and smiled fondly at Myolie during the preparation process of a scene.

Jayne: Jessica Hsuan and Myolie Wu’s make-up are so thick in the photos! I am not particularly fond of the costumes, hair, and make-up. The women in “War and Beauty” had much better style.

Myolie still looks like a little sister standing next to Jessica. Due to their age, I think it would have been better to switch their roles and let Myolie play the concubine. Guess TVB was eager to cast Myolie in a stand-out role and push her career to the next level!

  1. I don’t like the make-up style also but it’s strange from another series, maybe when we watch TV, it will be more different.

  2. I third that! Don’t like the heavy makeup at all. I don’t know why, I just don’t like Jessica’s look in ancient series. She has too much of a modern look that playing any roles in costume dramas does not flatter her. She looks best in modern dramas and pre modern such as in Old Time Buddies or Sisters of Pearl.
As for this series, the storyline and theme seems so overused. I know HK audience like watching these types of series, but doesn’t it get kind of boring and unoriginal after awhile. I think War and Beauty was the best, and felt that BTROC and CBML were overhyped, so don’t know about this one.

  3. Why only Jessica has the cherry lips make up? Myolie and Wong Suk Yi has normal lips make up.

  4. Poor Jessica has a horrible makeup compared to other cast such as Myolie Wu(who has a better makeup – based on the picture).

This drama will sell and get commendable ratings because HK loves dramas with tension and intense moments.

  5. I doubt this will make it to the top with such casts. The two lead ladies give me a modern feel too much, and Sunny is not the leading man type. Like everyone say, the make-up also turn me off.

  6. We are so used to Tommy’s gang to be in Modern series that it’s hard for us to picture them in a series like War and Beauty.

I really hope they do well because I know Myolie is looking for that breakthrough!

  7. Typical of TVB to keeping beating a horse after it’s long dead. Yet another ancient drama focusing on concubines fighting for power and affection. Do we really need similar versions of this type of genre every year?

  8. Do we really need similar versions of this type of genre every year?

A lot of TVB viewers seem to love this genre..

  9. The costumes and make-up looks like…blehhhhhh. This series will never be as good as BTROC. The costumes/make-up of BTROC was much much better than this! Also, BTROC had a better cast, in my opinion. Since BTROC was such a successful series, new series similar to the plot of BTROC should be avoided, or at least made better than this one here seems to be. Isn’t this “King of Ten Thousand Phoenixes” too much of a cliche?

    1. How could you compare 2 different dynasty’s in terms of costume & etcs.

And how would you KNOW the series will never be as good as BTROC? Never Judge the Book By It’s Cover.

      1. Good point about the different dynasties…we’ll just wait till 2011 to watch this, and hopefully it’ll be good 🙂 But I just hope the plot of this won’t be so similar to the palace themed dramas before.

    2. BTROC wasn’t even good in the first place. if you want to compare, compare with War and Beauty, which is the standard that all palace-themed dramas should have (and sadly, TVB has failed to create such a magnificent piece of work of this genre again), and which is also the very same drama that sparked off this palace-theme craze.
