Kenneth Ma: “I Wish to Be an Actor Instead of a Superstar!”
Kenneth Ma’s (馬國明) clean and healthy image sets him apart from other first-line actors who have been plagued with scandalous rumors involving busty mainland actresses. As an eligible bachelor in TVB, Kenneth is popular with female audiences. As Kenneth is known to be a filial son, he is also well-liked by housewives.
Kenneth’s Criteria for His Other Half
Admitting that he dated three times before, Kenneth is currently single and is still seeking his significant half.
Speaking about his criteria for his future girlfriend, Kenneth said, “As I am single now, I will just take it easy for relationship matters. Whether she is from the entertainment industry, it doesn’t matter. It’s important that our personalities are compatible. It’s best that she is not too quiet, immature, and does not know how to take care of people around her. Younger women are also not my cup of tea. After all, work is more important. If she wants me to accompany her every night for Karaoke sessions, I won’t be able to take it. It’s a waste of time! ”
Definition of a Good Man
As Kenneth is a family man who has a healthy lifestyle, he is perceived as a good man in the public’s eyes. Asked if he thought that he is a good man, Kenneth replied, “I feel that the definition of a good man is to take care of family and be faithful after marriage. I do not like casual dating; I treat every relationship seriously.”
Revealing that he wishes to stay with his parents after marriage, Kenneth said, “I hope that I can stay with my family after marriage and live together with my parents. Otherwise, I have to stay very close to my parents’ house. I like to stay at home. I am very traditional and I want to dine with my family during festive occasions. As of now, I do not think that I am considered a good man because I am not married yet.”
Kenneth Counts Himself to Be Lucky
In the entertainment industry for 12 years, Kenneth only became more prominent in recent years. Stating that acting is his passion, Kenneth said, “It’s happy to hold a job that is of your interest. I joined TVB because I like to act. In this line of work, you need more luck than efforts. I am considered one of the lucky ones as I only acted in cameo roles for three years. For me, three years is considered short.”
Kenneth further added, “I never thought of intentionally making myself more prominent. When I recalled those days in which nobody competed against each other and we would practice the filming scenes, it is very harmonious and simple.”
Acting for many years, Kenneth has played many different characters, ranging from a professional doctor, a ruthless criminal to a comical gamer. Kenneth shared that he enjoyed playing villains more than acting as “Mr. Nice Guy,” as there was more room to improve his acting skills.
Kenneth shared that he preferred the rouge lawyer character (MK Sun) in Survivor’s Law 2 <律政新人王2>, the caring brother (Koo Yu Tong) in A Fistful of Stances <鐵馬尋橋>, the straight-faced neurosurgeon (Dr. Cheung Yat Kin) in The Hippocratic Crush <On Call 36小時> and the accountant who was involved in money laundering (Alex Kong) in The Other Truth <真相>.
Prefers to Be an Actor Rather than a Superstar
Stating that singing is Raymond Lam’s (林峯) forte, Kenneth prefers to focus on his acting career as it is his greatest passion. As Kenneth does not have to carry the idol image, he revealed that he was able to try out many different characters, be it a comedian or a villain.
Preferring to be an actor instead of a superstar, Kenneth said, “I admire Wayne Lai (黎耀祥) and Benz Hui (許紹雄) the most for their approach to acting and personal lives. I feel that an actor cannot be too glamorous. Between an actor and superstar, I prefer to be an actor as I can concentrate on my acting and lead a simple life. An actor can marry and have kids, truly be himself and live the life he wishes. There are also less paparazzi stalking him.”
Hobbies and Favorite Pastime
As a “homebody,” Kenneth often dines with his family. He dislikes nightlife and drinking and will sleep around midnight if he does not need to work. Under the influence of his father, Kenneth also takes a liking to drinking Chinese tea. His favourite hobby is to play soccer. Whenever he has time, he will arrange a soccer game with his friends, maintaining a healthy lifestyle at the same time.
Kenneth’s Beauty Secrets
Kenneth disclosed that he used to resist facial care for men, and thought that skin care maintenance is only for women. Before entering the industry, Kenneth did not bother in keeping up his appearance, and could not even be bothered to comb his hair! He also disclosed that his face was filled with acne in the past, as he only used tap water to wash his face.
After becoming an actor, Kenneth realized that it is important to have a good image. Now, Kenneth will go for a facial every week. Revealing that he has a combination of oily and dry skin, Kenneth is now particular about selecting the right products for himself. He also undergoes laser treatment to improve his skin texture.

This is a very memorable quote, sums up Kenneth’s personality very well. Although he mentioned he is interested in making more money, so he will need to compromise some of his own preferences, such as primping up his sense of style although we all know he doesn’t care.
He gives such candid replies, no wonder many HK publications are eager to interview him these days. No doubt he is a responsible and mature man, but he may lack in taking initiatives.

I find that he is generalizing here, saying that all young women only want to party and go to karaoke to have fun. This is far from being true as there are young girls out there who are very mature for their age and do not like to stay out and party.

Exactly. His interviews don’t really add up because the kind of maturity (AKA sedentary lifestyle) he’s looking for can be found amongst the 50+ crowd but those women won’t be able to give him children. I’ve always felt that he’s just trying to be ‘edgy’ when he talks about going for older women.

Just because he says that I don’t think it means that he rules out all younger women. Also, if he wants kids, a woman that is too old will not be able to have any… I think he is just generalizing when he thinks that younger women are not mature or just like to party all night…

kenneth is always a humble actor in my eyes. maybe he’s boring, not my most fav actor in tvb but he has a charm that i can’t resist.
I am extremely confident that KM’s definition of younger women are those who are less mature and not focused on family oriented goals. They are generally more self-centered, materialistic and more liberated. I am sure if there is a younger woman who is family oriented and willing to compromise toward a lasting and happy relationship, KM will consider her as well. Unfortunately, those qualities are generally found in older women who have matured past the teens, 20’s and early 30’s. KM, thank goodness you are one of the last remaining dinosaurs who is not too caught up with the fame, fortune and bling, bling of movie/TV land…

However, there are some females at late 20s or early 30s, who would also focus on family relationships. Kenneth does not have to abandon the idea of having younger female as his partner.

Althought I like Ma Ming too but his replies about his future gf seems to be a boring nowadays.. I have lost count of how many times he said he doesn’t want younger gf and older gf is his cup of tea..

I prefer the caring and slightly off centred brother (Koo Yu Tong)a Fistful of Stances and the neurosurgeon in Hippocratic Crush. The story is bad for him in The Other Truth, difficult to like, though they could have developed it to have him being evil but good, then he could have become more likeable.
Not all young ladies like to party crazy and is immature.
My mum always say what you don’t like most, u will most likely end up getting it. Example: My sister use to hate boy that are younger than her and refuse to date them but then end up married to one lolz.
