Linda Chung Hopes to Become TV Queen in Two Years

Linda Chung (鍾嘉欣) has been a heavily discussed subject since her appearance on the reality prank show, Office of Practical Jokes <玩嘢王>, where she displayed incredible acting abilities. Linda’s health has not been in top form recently, but with the encouragement of fans, Linda hopes to win TV queen, get married and start a family in the next two years.

Despite the success of her roles in Heart of Greed <溏心風暴> and Yes Sir, Sorry Sir <點解阿Sir係阿Sir>, Linda has failed to win the Best Actress award and had lost confidence in herself. It is not clear whether Brother’s Keeper <巨轮> will be aired this year either. Linda admitted she was surprised by the good feedback on her appearance in Office of Practical Jokes, “I never knew I would get such praises from everyone. I just followed the script to be on the show! I’m surprised at the love I’m receiving and it really helped me regain my confidence.”

Linda Considered Quitting Acting

Despite the good praises for her acting, Linda lacks confidence in herself. “When I first started, everyone told me I should just give up because I’m too shy, don’t take initiative, and unsuitable for this industry. Even if I were to continue acting, I will eventually be ousted. I actually thought I would only last two years in this industry.”

Since filming Daddy Good Deeds <當旺爸爸>, Linda has been suffering from health problems. At one point, she filmed five dramas consecutively, which took a hard toll on her health, including the  development of heavy rashes on her face and body. “The doctor said that if I don’t take a good rest, then my thyroid would have problems. I really wanted to quit that time.”

Planning for Marriage

Linda said her next goal is to win the Best Actress award and afterwards, move on to the next stage of her life – marriage. “I hope that working hard the next two years will allow me to win the Best Actress award before I turn 31 years old. After winning the recognition, I can plan for the next stage in my life, and think about marriage.”

Linda believes that having a home is more important than having a career and that her objective is to eventually move back to Canada to live with her own family. “My career is important, but it won’t be important for my entire life.”

When asked if her ideal husband is rumored boyfriend, Philip Ng (伍允龍), Linda answered that the gossip in the entertainment industry is too ruthless, and she prefers to keep things underground until she makes an official announcement. “Kelly Chen (陳慧琳) is my idol; she maintains a healthy balance between her established career and love life.”

  1. With her acting skills right now, I don’t think so. Her acting still ain’t that good. It’s still a long way.

    1. But then again, who said that the ones that have won TVB queen truly had good acting or are talented??? Not many of them so she may win it due to favoritism, connections, luck, etc…

Having a career helps to secure the home so hope that she will continue to do something else after she retires from acting.

    2. Better than Myolie but guess who won two years ago. Lol

      1. Agreed, Myolie’s acting is terrible, and so is Tavia’s imo. There’s not much else for competition, and everyone was impressed with what the acting she pulled off in ‘Office of Practical Jokes’.

    3. If she’s given a good role that generates a lot of news, it’s possible for her to win it. We all know TVB doesn’t give out awards based on actual acting.

      1. Yup, well said Cherry!! Myolie and Tavia’s acting both are not so great but they managed to win so Linda definately has a strong chance.

  2. I do hope she wins it sometime in the future, maybe not this year. I want to see Brother’s Keeper or Big Wheel first.. o.O
And I’m happy that she’s becoming more confident in herself and I hope she takes care of her health!! :’)

  3. I can see this happening, especially since my guess is that she’s next in line to become TV Queen. I think it’ll depend on the reception for Big Wheel. Originally, I would have thought that the ladies from Beauty at War would have a big shot, but there’s no way now that their ratings are so low.

    1. But ratings aren’t everything though. I do believe Christine Ng may be nominated ? :/

      1. They might be nominated, but I don’t think they can win. I believe there are a lot of factors getting an award which includes timing, audience reception, likability, and ratings. I actually haven’t started on Beauty at War yet so I can’t comment on my thoughts on their acting, but I don’t believe this series has viewers or press on their side, which can hurt them in getting an award.

  4. I’m sure she will win it soon! With all the A-listers in TVB leaving Linda would technically be the only one with “better” skills to win it.

    1. Yeah it’s pretty much a case of outliving everyone to take home the award.

  5. I don’t think she can win TV Queen this year. She has a few more years in her contract, so she is not on the top of the list, TVB prefers to reserve TV Queen for Fala Chen who is on the brink of leaving. But, I hope she can win something before she leaves the industry.

    1. If we ignore the acting, Fala would most likely move to a per series while Linda would have a management contract. I would think they would rather reward someone who is still signed to their management contract.

      1. Tought she would win My Favorite Female Character last year, since she had more series than anybody in TVB, and Witness Insecurity was successful. Very dissapointed it went Kate Tsui.

      2. Kate got very popular last year for that role, but I knew she wouldn’t be able to beat Tavia since Tavia was “next in line” to get the TVB Queen award.

  6. Linda’s acting in my opinion, is way better than Fala’s, Kate’s and Myolie’s.

    1. All of the actresses you suggested have their own strengths and flaws.

But there are some actresses that play supporting roles who are better than all of them or at least actresses who can act but aren’t given more opportunities because of their age . Ex: Elena Kong, Florence Kwok, Rachel Kan, etc.

They should try to promote Nancy Wu, Kaki Leung 梁嘉琪 to more leading roles.

    2. Honestly the five, Tavia, Fala, Kate, Myolie and Linda can’t really outshine one another. There is no.1 between the five of them. More like:

      No. 2-5 Tavia
      No. 2-5 Fala
      No. 2-5 Myolie
      No. 2-5 Linda

    3. To me, Kate’s, Myolie’s, Fala’s> Linda’s

  7. Unless they give it to someone who has already won it before I would say Linda has the best chance right now with Brother’s Keeper. Originally I thought Fala would be given it because TVB were pushing her with TITS2 and Will Power but since she might be leaving and I don’t think she’ll re-sign a management contract I think she’s on the cusp as TVB have spent so many resources on her.

Myolie also has a shot with TITS2 and No Reserve (unless it fails catastrophically like Bullet Brain), if TVB doesn’t feel like pushing Linda/Kate/Fala to the next stage yet.

It’s a shame that all this is so speculative as right now there hasn’t been a contender as all the series with potential contenders have been poorly received and despite Sheren and Ada’s performance in Beauty At War they’ll stand no chance as virtually nobody is watching it!

  8. I don’t think Linda has the chance yet. Her acting is still…To be honest, still need ALOT of improvement

    1. In terms of ability there are definitely those above her but who else can TVB award? With all their top artists fleeing the nest I think they can’t risk losing Linda who has already put down the gauntlet as before she turns 31. If she doesn’t get it she might follow Fala’s footsteps.

      1. Well, Linda did say that acting won’t be her entire life and she would eventually leave the entertainment industry. Whatever she chooses, I wish she will be happy for it. And during her stay in the enterainment circle, regardless of tvb awards or not, she’s still one of my favourite actresses.

And I feel that Linda will always try to improve her acting, no matter what.

  9. Such an appropriate photo!

To be quite honest, I love Linda’s acting. In my opinion, she has improved a lot since her Heart of Greed days. She did fantastic in Yes Sir, Sorry Sir as well as Daddy Good Deeds.

Now that Myolie and Tavia have already won Best Actress and if they don’t win it anymore then I think the next actress who deserves to win it is either Linda or Kate Tsui.

  10. Well, given the rate of people leaving TVB, Linda might be the only option in two years! lol…

  11. Linda does not have what it takes to become a movie queen. SHe has taken on too many “goody two shoes” roles and not more challenging or diverse roles to push her into the elite queen category. Witness Insecurity was a good challenge but she needs more of those roles to challenge the other female fadans.

  12. how can she bear moving back to canada???
it’s so boring there, there’s basically nothing and you just sit around waiting to grow old and die

      1. Actually to be more accurate, same hometown as Linda Chung.

    1. I want an apology. LOL.
      I also live in Canada.

    2. No, you are wrong. We actually have many things to do here. We have a high living standard too. In fact, we breathe better than almost everyone else on earth. We Canadians are also very nice, unlike some people from other countries.

      1. I think Canadians are so funny. Well some of them. They always make fun of Americans about how much we suck. About how our government stinks. About our sports. About our food.

        YET.

They know more about the NY Rangers more than I do?! Funny Canadians!

And like I said, it was only a HANDFUL that are like that. I know another HANDFUL who are excellent people 😀

    3. Hey, it’s clean up there. At least the freaking side walks in Canada don’t have nasty stuff all over it ranging from spit, dog poop, more poop, bums pee, etc etc. Yeah I live in NYC. I hate the streets/side walks here. UGHHHH.

    4. It’s her country. It’s hard for the Canadians/Americans to get used to life in HK, where people are every where, complain about everything, land is scarce, that not even middle class can effort a house.

      1. So true and I heard about the hectic and stressful life in HK since my sister in law is from there. Her family lives there and she said it is good to visit HK, but not so great to live. You need to be really really wealthy to enjoy life in HK.

      2. They don’t have the spring/summer weather like in north america. I heard it’s always cloudy over there due to pollution from china, super hot in the summer, rains like crazy couple of time in a week.

      3. @lalaland

It rains 5-6 days a week here. It was nice and sunny on Saturday and I regret not going hiking because the views would surely have been amazing.

    5. nyny,
“how can she bear moving back to canada???”

That’s pretty harsh. Linda longs to go back to Canada because her family is there. She has been homesick for too long and took a month-long trip to visit her family there.

Home is where loved ones are.

      1. Some are close to their family and don’t want to be too far from them while there are others that can’t wait to get away from their family. Some marry and follow their husbands and live faraway. But there are some that cannot do that… It just variees but in Linda’s case, she seems to be close to her family because they treat her well so don’t want to be away from them.

  13. Love her as a person, but don’t like to watch her in series. Most of her characters are just weak and annoying. Although she does can act. Yes, TVB can you just do one thing right LOL?

  14. Linda seems like a nice person based on the reports about her which I’ve read. Apart from her nickname Linda BB which is totally annoying (but of course, this is not her fault. God knows who came up with this trashy nickname), I like her as a person, but not too much as an actress. She always play the role of a kind-hearted, goody two shoes and pitiful girl. Yes, I know these roles are meant to be likeable but I find her crying over annoying at times. This is especially so in heart of greed, she needs to stop crying seriously. But then again, it’s not Linda’s fault. Txb needs to stop stereotyping Linda into such roles, I believe Linda’s ability can be stretched and she can improve with a greater variation of roles.

  15. I don’t feel awards really mean much, especially if they are given by TVB. Therefore, I don’t think Linda should put too much emphasis on awards but rather trying to enjoy what she is doing before she leaves the circle.

      1. please tell me.. who can do a better job than her?

    1. yeah…. I like Linda as a person. But her acting is not that great yet to win BA award. Maybe Kate will be the next BA .

      1. Kate is really inconsistent. She did well in Highs and Lows, but didn’t shine in Season of Love. There’s still the Sniper drama though. To me, Linda is competent for every drama, but not always exceptional. She shined in Heart of Greed, A Journey Called Life, and Yes Sir, Sorry Sir, but also did well (not too bad) in River of Wine, L’Escargot, etc. It’s always her weak and nice characters though. Hoping for a breakthroughsoon.

  16. I like her, she come across as a really nice person. But having said that, I don’t think acting is for her.

  17. with fala gone and kate’s series with dayo meant for next year, linda’s turn is now and she has one of this year’s most anticipated series brother’s keeper which will air during summer break, the same season where ratings always good such as witness last year.

linda also has won support of netizens and got lots of praises after she fooled audience in office of practical jokes. audience are in her favour now.

    1. Her performance in Practical Jokes was great, but as a viewer, I wouldn’t put my vote on her based on that performance over say performances in series/dramas.

Moving off into a tangent, Hope she gets a chance to receive different roles from her previous ones…would like to see her change her image for once. Good that she’s keeping her image simple, clean and innnocent in such an industry that makes it difficult-but imo, artists’ should be versatile. Right now I can only remember Linda as presenting one image through her entire career so far. Sometimes I have trouble differentiating which of her character images are from which of her series. Why not change a little after so many years …? 🙁

And if she needs other current fadans to leave tvb in order to receive a supposedly better chance of winning the BA title…what’s the point?? I’d rather it be a competitive yet healthy competition for BA. So if she does win, it means something..rather than she won because she was her own competition.

      1. her performance in office of practical joke put her on a good start. she’s the only fadan so far that got praises and supported by netizens to get ‘tv queen’ while other female in lead roles have been criticized such as sire and tavia. linda still have brothr’s keeper which is a quite big and very anticipated series! who said no competition? she only evaded political advantage of fala but still need to face myolie who has a challenging roles in triumph 2 and bo reserve and others such as esther!

      2. I wouldn’t call the roles in TITS2 to be challenging for Myolie.

  18. I get the feeling that she knows TVB is planning to give it to her soon so that’s why she said it. Imagine if she said that and didn’t. Embarrassing much no?

    1. Probably right. Maybe she was given hints from the upper management.

  19. I like Linda, I think she definitely sends out a good, positive vibe with her personality.

It’s great to hear she’s planning ahead as to where to wants to lead her career in which direction..but I’m in slight disagreement with her way of thinking/planning because even if one works hard continously, awards do not often arrive on a platter once you believe that the ‘time has come’. If this was the case, im sure many veteran or supporting artists’ who’ve been working for tvb for years should have received awards waaaayy before current fadans and sui sungs would even get nominated.

Hoping and planning to win an award as a goal isn’t really a realistic idea imo,
as tvb awards are mainly about luck and fate, not necessarily aimed to reward those who are worthy…

I’d rather she think of awards as a bonus to her improvements in her acting. NEvertheless, good to see her using it as a motivation.

  20. It’s refreshing when a young actress says that her career isn’t worth everything to her; and to prioritize her family above it! i bet it’s been a tough 10 years for her to be separated from a family that she is so close to!

I’m a big fan of Linda. All the best for her to get some more prizes from TVB!

  21. She’ll probably get it soon. There are not that many fadans left to compete with
