Linda Chung Felt “Brother’s Keeper” Role Was Custom-made for Her
Linda Chung (鍾嘉欣) is thankful to Brother’s Keeper <巨輪> for giving her the closest chance yet to become a legitimate TV Queen, attributing her success to an alluring script and a character she deeply resonates with.
Linda has collaborated with TVB’s finest artists ever since the start of her acting career. She has been nominated for the TVB Anniversary Awards almost every year, though has only took home the Most Improved title. A favorite of TVB executives, Linda was given yet another chance to compete for TV Queen this year with a starring role in heavily-promoted series Brother’s Keeper. Linda was under heavier public scrutiny than usual and became a target of unfounded media gossips.
Although it was a steep price to pay, Linda was rewarded with a Best Actress recognition at the TVB Star Awards Malaysia on December 1. An emotional Linda spoke about her effort throughout the years, and thanked everyone who had supported her along the way, especially the team behind her latest series.
Even though she was only a teenager during the 1990s, Linda is full of nostalgia about the time period. Living in Canada with her parents and two older siblings, she and her family shared a modest but loving lifestyle. With her parents holding down multiple jobs to make ends meet, Linda has learned long ago to treasure every moment she gets to spend with those she loves.
She maintains a close relationship with her mother in particular. When Linda signed on to film Brother’s Keeper, her mother graciously sent over her own clothes from the era so that her daughter will be dressed for the part. Playing smart and ambitious fashion designer Rachel Cheuk, Linda finds many similarities between herself and her character. “I feel that Rachel is a role custom-made for me. She and I share a similar background. She left her home [to pursue her dreams], and I did as well. I also enjoy nostalgia and love vintage culture, so I really like this character.”

I would’ve thought her chances last year with 4 series aired would have been better than this year with 2 mediocre/forgettable series….

BK’s was a very bad role. But she is lying to herself thinking it was a really good role for her. She said the same thing about her bad dress sense. She thought that ugly suede dress she wore earlier was very nice. The majority of people thought she was the worst dressed. Now if she can’t see that through a mirror, of course she’s not gonna see how bad this is.

Linda was awful in BK. She should win for the best innocent and sweet 30 year old woman but not for the best TVB actress.

I will not dispute her win in M’sia though as many of my relatives & friends voted for her….no doubt she is very popular & a favorite here in M’sia ….BUT if she wins in HK again, the rigging theory may be true, after all.
Linda’s acting has not improved at all. I just felt that she only plays those role of an innocent girl well. Anything beyond that and she is immediately out of her comfort zone and struggle. Her acting in BK is bad and is no different to that earlier show which she played the rich girl role with Bosco as the bodyguard. She did badly in both role imo. If she wins the TV queen this year, it’s because it’s rigged by TVB execs! There are much better actresses out there this year.
Honestly, I find her acting as the rebellious and crazy girl more pleasing than her usual innocent girl roles. Her performances in A Journey Called Life and The Gem of Life were her best for me. I can only hope she does well in Tiger Cubs 2.

I preferred to watch Edwin’s story arc more than Ruco’s, but that’s not really saying anything about their acting. Ruco is good but he’s not that good. I feel like he is underrated by the general public but overrated by people on this site.

I really like Linda. I find her a good actress and a very likeable personality. I think she is lovely and no matter what negative news, I tend to believe her. But I am sick to death of her “tunnel vision” with regards to her role and performance in Brother’s Keeper. This is her worst role and one of the worst written role ever, and yet her she goes again and again and again about how great this minimal and badly acted role is, and pinning her hopes of winning so called best actress with this role. Is she delusional? Or self delusional? I am glad she has the confidence but this is the worst sort. This is like almost everybody telling you you sucked and you think I am great. I am very annoyed.

The only similarities I see of them is she is always trying to jam in her English supposedly because she was from Canada but I find her always speaking it even more annoying. I’ve never seen any TVB celebrity as daydreaming and borderline delusional as Linda Chung who is stuck in her fairy tale rainbowland world where she thinks she did a great job in BK. Seriously Linda Chung, you’re just riding on Ruco and Kristal’s great acting and TVB’s promotional team right now, and now you’re on it by self promoting yourself. I’ve heard enough of TVB managers paying affiliated reporters and magazines to publicize their celebs. It is only too bad that now TVB are enemies with Next group magazines and can’t bribe their reporters anymore after the ban, if not we will see Linda Chung’s rainbow tinted ‘I’m great in BK’ everywhere!

Those are your subjective opinions about Linda, but as a viewer, she was not great in BK, and really does not deserve best actress. Her performance was weak and poor.

Nicholas, I understand that some comments here may have upset you but honestly I don’t think any of these comments are that harsh. Her role in the series is not something to be complimented for, I’m sure some of us and even you realized that. We’re not making any personal comments about her but we all have the right to provide constructive criticism when an artiste did not perform well and I’m sure Linda understands this as well.
Also I don’t think you should care too much about an idol or any other artistes, it’s not really healthy. I understand you may be a huge fan of hers but being so agitated over someone who you do not personally know especially just by a few words it’s going to just hurt you more….we should all be grown ups about it. For me her best role is in The Gem of Life. I frankly think she acted well in that role. She did showed her acting skills in the Gem of Life and it was believable. But once she was promoted to 1st line actress, TVB stopped giving her challenging role. always goody 2 shoes roles with nice personality. actually TVB is to be blamed for not tapping into her potential by giving her more different roles. just stereotyping her to 1 role because it was what the HK public wants to watch. that makes her acting stale. personally i think that’s the problem

The only reason she got nominated was because she was involved with a very good production, any other actress that played her character would have been nominated as well because of the series not necessarily how well she did.

Rachel in Brother’s Keeper lacked luster, as someone said, one of those roles that just fades away. I heard Linda played her villain role real well in Gem of Life. She should take on a villain role in her next project. And maybe that’ll give her the breakthrough she needs in winning the Best Actress award.

I strongly believe that “TVB Star Awards Malaysia 2013” was rigged. Why else would it be run by TVB and differently from previous years?
Dont even need to state the facts- it was pretty obvious that the results were rigged. Being supposedly based on all fan votes, I have a feeling Tavia took the highest votes in by fans since her popularity over in malaysia is quite predominant ever since OC. Seems like TBB shifted the results to give it to Linda imo.. if you ask me, Kristal performance is the one to be applauded for. Even if Linda takes BA this year like TBB is setting her up to take it, i’m sure viewers would still recognise what is talent is support those who are deserving despite their ‘loss’ if it was ever considered a ‘loss’ anyway lol.
Although I don’t think of Linda as a good actress, I believe her fanbase is prominent. If I rmb rite, in Malaysia last week, Linda had the most fans (female side) to come and cheer for her during the Astro award and in the airport back to HK. It partly tells that Linda has the biggest fanbase in Msia among the attendants. If the other actress(es) has bigger fanbases, where were her (their) fans in the award night and in the airport?
However, I always believe the results are rigged in all years, not only 2013. Txb has a queue of their loyalty beloved kids to reward, this year is Linda’s turn.

FACT: Reports that Linda had the most fans to support at at the airport etc. According to video reports of the artists’ arriving at the airport and greeted by fans, it was Ruco and Tavia who had the most fans that were surrounding them. And you’re right- it is hard to say who has more fans than who, but I dont doubt Tavia’s large fanbase at all.

I don’t doubt Tavia’s fan base either. Myolie is the one I doubt pre-TV queen win. As of now, she probably got even more from her China series.
Tavia out of the three probably has the most consistent fan base, just my opinion. Consistent meaning, extremely low point in career (FANS), high point in career (MORE FANS).
At least 5 articles Ive seen said that 30 fans goes for Chilam (max) and the next person is Linda (second). They shot the pix of artist surrounding them, too. There are crossed fans, mean fans of more than one artist or fans of nobody, just come to see the artists and when they see an artist stay alone or less fans, they will come. I asked my frd in Msia who came for Myolie in airport, exactly female side, Linda and Myolie have the most real fans (only come for them). A large amount of crossed fans came there. Ron, surprisingly, has a fair amount of real fans to come and support.
Well my friends who went to the airport reported that the most fans are by Chilam and Linda, but followed by Ruco. In fact they are surprised that Ruco has lots of Malaysian fans. There are not that many that goes for Myolie, Ron and Tavia from my friends story.
At the award site, my friends said that Ruco and Linda received the most applause from audience and real fans. Chilam too. There are not much applause for Ron, Myolie and Tavia.
I find it so fascinating and funny that most comments and feedback I read from netizens and from viewers about Linda’s BK role as being one of the least best performed roles, yet the HK media shows a COMPLETELY different view how Linda’s performance was outstanding enough to be the biggest favoured to win Queen this year,hyping her and presenting it like all audiences believe her performance was BA level..
This year, the most promoted leading actresses for TV queen are really bad
1. Linda, her acting is ok in Brother Keeper, but it is similar to her previous dramas, and her character doesn’t stand out and breakthrough.
2. Fala, her acting in TITS2 needs to be improved because she doesn’t do well in crying scenes and comedic scenes. Her crying scenes are really fake. Her funny scenes are even terrible because it doesn’t look funny.
3. Kate, her acting in Sniper Attack is bad, and her character is terrible. A lot of audiences hate the ways she acts. In addition, in her new drama Bounty Lady, her acting is even worse, her acting scenes are not laughable, and other supporting actresses act a lot better than her.

Yes I agree. These same people keep repeating their hate messages here. There are many Linda haters here. Tbh, Linda is ok in her acting not as bad as these haters puts it. I find her enjoyable overall thougu not her best role in BK. For Rachael’s role I am not sure is it her fault that the character is annoying or the blame shd be put on the script.
You can’t blame the scriptwriter when actors/actresses performed poorly. It is their own fault that they performed that way, it is the artists duty to bring their character to life

It’s difficult for me to process the thought of Linda being smart and ambitious. Smart would be Myolie and ambitious would be Fala. Linda needs to step out of her bubble and grow up. I think more harsh life experiences will improve her acting.

It’s the roles that limit her. Linda has proven countless of times that she can do really well but having to portray the same kind of self-less mary-sue characters over and over is limiting her potential.
But I believe her role in Tiger Cubs 2 will be quite different so I’m looking forward to that performance.

All these talks about Linda and Ruco dating… please stop. Don’t get my hopes up! I do think they make a fine pair. And I do think Ruco likes her. I think generally Ruco likes attractive girls. Can’t blame him. I know I blast Linda for her role and self delusional talks but Linda + Ruco for me in real life will be an ideal pair.

Ruco have many times said how well Linda did on BK!!!! Constantly over and over again!!!! Even 2 days ago he still comment on supporting Linda for BA! Why don’t u guys say is he blind? Is he tunnel vision? He worked with Linda for 2 months and he really said Linda matured and did well in bk but u guys don’t find him annoying for saying that because u guys love Ruco so much??!!!! When someone compliments on a colleague, it’s called mannerism and good gesture. When you yourself commented on yourself there’s always criticism. Her role in BK was especially and definitely one of her most average if not the worst role she ever had. Of course, the scriptwriter is also to blame for such a lame character from beginning to end. Yes, she can feel she is totally playing herself which seems so but she is nowhere near queen material. I don’t dislike/like her so I am not picking on her but from how she performed in that character and how boring it was just don’t shed any wow factor at all.
Hmm… Does it mean Linda is one leg in 2 boats? One side keep saying her relationship with Philip Ng is still good (hint of a love), one side date Ruco.
I blv the whole Ruco-Linda incident is no more than a public stunt because kids also know that when an actor and an actress sit in same car, they will be rumoured by medias. But if its true, Philip is used to promote for the mini concert last time and now to lead ppl out of her acting in BK. Do you watch The Hunger game: Catching fire? The same gimmick used by Capitol to destroy the rebellion.

For Linda and Ruco (or any hot male leads), the missing component may be “passion”.
If no criticisms towards an artist with bad performance, he or she will not improve and learn at all. they will always think they are good(just like now she believes Rachael was a great role). Hiding and ignoring the truth will definitely harm her, this is what tvb and hk media is doing to her

This is an example where although the artiste has similar traits to the fake character, the artiste fails to make a deep impression. Thus, sometimes proper casting DOES not lead to good results.
This could be a miscast, and I don’t really think Linda have similar traits as Rachael. They are plenty of tvb artists who came from a wealthy background(this point does not correspond with Linda), who left home to pursuit her career

In fact, I think Linda Chung’s singing is a lot worse than her acting.
It is easier to improve a person’s acting, but harder to improve a person’s singing if you don’t have a good and strong voice. Linda’s voice is weak and soft, and cannot sing a wide range of notes. I hope she realizes it, same as Liza Wang’s voice.
I don’t think she is delusional and it is good to have some pride in one’s work. It was not her best role and she’s pretty much typecasted as innocent and sweet so her “against type” is cold ice queen waiting for the right guy to break her exterior.
Both are done to death. Her guest appearance on Johnson Li’s show demonstrates that she can do fun and calculating. I think she needs to branch out in a physical comedy – Sharon Chan style. Or do a drama as young single mother.
@smurf, she did branch out in comedy b4. She starred alongside with wong hei as a ghost. Very funny and entertaining. Actually I think she can act, at least she has more range than Kate. As for her singing it is not best vocals but pleasant. She worked hard and has earned many many fans’ support as well as support from her colleagues and co-stars. She comes across as a very humble kind, not arrogant and definitely not fake.

If her role as Rachel Cheuk was bad as you mentioned, then why should Linda Chung win TV Queen (Best Actress) award? Best Actress award is given to an actress showing her best performance in a drama series and her acting surpasses every other actress’ in all TVB drama series in 2013. That is what we have been talking about Linda Chung and her performance as Rachel in “Brother’s Keeper”. I did not see people here “tearing her down” as you mentioned.

Is there an old link to this page when Tavia and Myolie won BA? I wonder what was the reaction in here when they won. Is it as bad as how Linda is treated here now or worse? Myolie Wu deserved TV Queen more in “Ghetto Justice” in 2011, but she won TV Queen in “Curse of the Royal Harem”. She acted badly in “Curse of the Royal Harem”.
Tavia Yeung deserved TVB Queen more in “Hipp. Crush” in 2012, but she got TVB Queen in “SSSS”. Tavia did okay in “SSSS”, but not amazing.
Well my family is watching Tavia in ssss now on Fairchild TV. I don’t watch it because I can’t stand that old man and 4 wives. Looks so boring! I didn’t watch Myolie one because she just don’t look like a villain to me so probably did a bad job.
Since the 2 didn’t do that well and still won BA then same goes with Linda. Tvb will give it to her anyways even if the role is not great. I rather Linda win than Kate. Those are the only 2 that haven’t won yet.
I know TVB will give “Best Actress” award to either Linda Chung or Kate Tsui, maybe Linda this year and Kate next. I am not surprised at all.

i dont get why ppl say myolie’s curse of the royal harem she did badly. i think i really love her there. her tears were real, her character is to act cruel/bad person because of her mom and storyline was good too. she died in the end but the whole show was really really nice! even liza wang and many actresses on the award ceremony picked myolie’s (curse of the royal harem ) when asked. is like everyone know she will get it. FIXED!
Same here, I think Myolie didn’t do badly in Curse. I’ve just watched SSSS when my mom watched it on a local channel, meh, if Myolie in Curse is bad, the next winner is nothing better. Getto is better than Curse, and Myolie is more famous with Getto than Curse which lead to a better victory if she was nominated with Getto, but she didn’t do bad in Curse. To compare Curse to BTROC, I prefer Curse.

Linda’s overall performance was really bad in BK. I know people can be subjective on their opinions (because it is their idol), but to be honest,and as a viewer, she really do not deserve TV queen title. Having a nice attitude + hard working is not a formula for getting TV queen award (just about everyone is hard working and has a nice attitude, should they also get TV queen)
will, i don’t agree that she’s really bad in BK; she’s good in some scenes too. It’s the character that’s not well written but she made the best of it and that’s to her credit. Don’t even get me started on the “deserving or not deserving” part.

To be fair to her, there’s only so much she can do with how the character’s written and i thought she pulled it off well enough. TBH, how many of the current fadans really deserve BA not just this year but in any year? Myolie got criticised, Tavia got criticised; don’t tell me it’s Shereen cos i didn’t watch Rosy Business and that Beauty-whatever drama she was in and don’t have any idea of whether she’s that good as people say. Linda still needs more time & experience in acting. But in BK, I really thought the role seems to be tailor -made for her. She looks & dress the part. Many of her clothes were lovely. And her “OMGs” in the beginning was kinda cute & funny. No, I’m not a fan but I think she did better than usual for this particular role.

I don’t think any of the other fadans can even make Rachel come alive. Tavia would be too old for that character and she is not even sweet enough to make first love expression. Kate is horrible with love scenes. Fala can’t even cry properly with real tears. The only person might be Myolie because she have done sweet love scenes with Bosco and Kevin before and not bad.
How about Niki, Sharon, Joey, Esther, Nancy, Charmaine ??? Do U think they can do a good job with Rachel?
Out of the list of fadans you mentioned, Nancy has the acting skills and classiness for the role. She’s only less pretty than Linda.
If Joey or Esther were younger, they both would be the perfect choice for their acting skills, looks, charisma and classiness.
I would say Charmaine for her charisma and classiness, but she may look too old for the part.
Charmaine is 15 years too late but if she had been younger, yes maybe but I do believe her acting skills may be disputed. She is not much a better actress than Linda.

Nancy can. She gives a very classy and elegant vibe in FH3, where she made her unlikeable character likeable. She also has proven she can be both young and mature.
Not sure of Nancy’s look for Rachel Cheuk, but her acting skills would definitely make Rachel’s character more amazing.

Shirley looks young, bubble, sweet. Sharon nails quite good with a rich spoiled brat before (The last breakthrough). A young Sonija is pretty and sweet. Elaine Yiu can do Rachel’s role.
I vote to Elaine Yiu. But I think the most suitable for such role is either Rain Li or Michelle Ye.
I don’t know if Rachel Cheuk was a spoiled brat or not, but I definitely did not see it in Linda Chung’s portrayal. Linda’s acting was pretty bland and her love scenes with Ruco Chan were not sweet and romantic at all.

Personally I think Linda Chung should wear different hair styles for different characters. If Linda wants to give us a new image when she acts a new character, she has to get her long hair cut. No matter how different she acts, people still keep the same image of Linda Chung.
I strongly believe that good and appropriate makeup and packaging (hair style and clothing) can reflect the characteristics of a character in a drama series. Here are some examples: If Fala Chen wears her long and curly hair in her barrister’s role in “Will Power”, her acting will not be appreciated highly. Same applies to Myolie Wu’s short hair in Summer’s character (a tom-boy technician) in TITS 2. If she wears long and curly hair, it is very hard to impress people that she is a tom boy technician.
A good actress should wear different hair styles for different characters in order to give her audience a brand new image.

In terms of willingness to change her hair styles, I think Myolie Wu is the best actress. She knew she would not look pretty in having a tomboy haircut in “TITS 2”. She was not planning to do it at the beginning, but eventually she listened to the producer and had her hair cut very short. I really like her in this respect.
Kate Tsui is another stubborn actress. She always wears long hair, heavy makeup, long fake eyelashes, high-heeled shoes no matter what characters she is acting, including a police officer.
A good and professional actress should dress up as per image and characteristics of the character she is portraying so as to give her audience a good image of her role, not always Linda Chung or Kate Tsui.
Yeh I don’t think Kate or Linda will ever rise or find much success outside TVB. Winning TV Queen is certainly not the peak of an actress’ career but for their limited abilities and ‘conservative’ approach, this is the highest they will ever go.
Linda won’t defy TVB. She’s the type of actress who has no opinions. She reads from the script and acts out the way she’s required to be. She’s not going to speak out, change script, or discuss with the director on a different way to handle the character. she does as she’s told to do….

If the character is custom-made for her because its similar to her background and personality in real life, then that’s not called acting. That’s called playing yourself. Is that BA-worthy? I don’t think so.
I agree with Linda. I too liked the character she played. I noticed the costume design and the hairstyle changes for past and present scenes. She was quite beautiful with those vintage clothes and hairstyle. She was also able to speak English for the most part, which I find awesome because it reflects her ability to speak English in real life. She also played a mature role as she developed from a younger woman.

The character, Rachel Cheuk, (portrayed by Linda Chung) does not require good English speaking ability. If Linda Chung wants to show off her excellent English speaking ability, I suggest that she films a Hollywood movie or some American/Canadian drama series.

Exactly. Moreover, the character was not an ABC, BBC, or CBC, what was the need to speak so much English? Rachel’s mother did not seem to be well-educated. I doubt how much English she knew with her background (being the 2nd wife of a rich man).
