Netizens Cry Miss Hong Kong 2014 Pageant Results Were Rigged
The Miss Hong Kong 2014 pageant concluded on August 31 with controversial results. Although TVB utilized a combination of votes from the public and its own judges, the winners’ victories were heavily contested. Many netizens even speculated that the results were rigged.
Prior to announcing the top three finalists, TVB’s Fun App already asked voters to select the winner for the Miss Hong Kong title.
It was reported that #11 Sofiee Ng‘s (吳凱欣) online votes were higher than the top three finalists’ votes. Since the contestants’ official profiles were released to the public, Sofiee was a popular choice expected to take the crown. When Sofiee failed to place in the top three finalists and Veronica Shiu (邵珮詩) was crowned, even MC Eric Tsang‘s (曾志偉) jaw dropped.
Veronica, 1st runner-up Erin Wong (王卓淇), and 2nd runner-up Katherine Ho (何艷娟) appeared at a press conference yesterday and addressed the controversies surrounding the pageant results. Veronica said, “It is the majority’s decision; we should respect the results.”
Asked if she was unhappy about the negativity behind her victory, Veronica shook her head and said, “I’m confident in myself, and everyone accepted me because my performance was good. All of the ten contestants did well, but perhaps some candidates stood out more.”
When it was pointed out that even the pageant’s MCs and hosts were stunned by the results, Erin Wong said, “Nat Chan (陳百祥) and Chin Ka Lok (錢嘉樂) support me. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I don’t think I won as a dark horse.”
Defending her second runner up title, Katherine Ho firmly reiterated that everyone already knew about the one-vote-per-person system since the start of the competition. Therefore, the results should reflect citizens’ choices.

It does not take Sherlock Holmes to figure out that this TVB contest was rigged just like TVB’s Best TV Artist Awards. It goes back to which sponsors or advertisers are willing to pay high advertising fees or donate “pricey” prizes in return for name recognition and get a say in which contestant should model their products and later get favorable consideration during the pageant voting.

And may I say I’m surprised Gloria voted for Vernoica?? Gina should know this since she loves Veronica, Gloria competed with Veronica and Linna in Miss Chinese Vancouver 2012. Linna won Miss Photogenic in that pageant. Surprisingly though, she didn’t win it this time. And, I guess Gloria is closer friends with Veronica and hence voted for her rather than Linna.
Talk about rigging the vote!! I just can’t believe TVB is that ignorant to allow Gloria Tang to vote for Miss Photogenic. OBVIOUS CONFLICT OF INTEREST THERE. INDEPENDENCE IS IMPAIRED. But yet, they chose her. TVB needs to make wiser decisions.
I don’t think TVB knew that Linna and Veronica knew each other or participated in previous pageants nor the fact that Gloria knew both of them because it was Gloria who told some of the female artists at the end of the pageant.
Most people from Vancouver had already picked up that Veronica was running in this pageant as there was a comment on fb page that wished Veronica good luck, prior to the whole pageant.
Typo there: the female judges got Jennifer Shum wrong in 2012 and now AGAIN in 2014.
As for Jolly, you must be a little naive to think TVB doesn’t know Linna and Veronica knew each other prior to the pageant. I made freakin they competed in a pageant 2 years ago LOL! Even the HK newspapers reported they were former pageant veterans in the Miss Chinese Vancouver pageant. TVB is not that dumb and must likely conducted background checks before they were selected. And I do think they were asked if they had any previous pageant experience.
If they know Linna and Veronica’s previous pageant experience, they will know they competed with Gloria.

Then explain why did Gloria say in an interview that, there is something that everyone don’t know, that she competed with both Linna and Veronica. This was done RIGHT AFTER the pageant.

The Sun and Oriental Daily reported this DURING THEIR FIRST OFFICIAL PRESS CONFERENCE. Happened before #10 Sabrina withdrew from the pageant. Not sure if Jaynestars translated the article but clearly, their backgrounds were identified and pageant experience was reported.

I don’t know their names, but AT LEAST THREE of the MCs on that Entertainment News show are from Vancouver. One competed in MCV 2011, one was 3rd RU in MSHK 2011, and one is from Vancouver.
Eliza, Gloria, Linda, Leanne, Sonija, Grace Chan, Kayi (not being promoted but still), Carat, Jacqueline Wong, the 2nd RU at MSHK 2012, and a few minor actresses in TVB ALL COME FROM VANCOUVER. And yet you say I need to prove it LMAO?
Most of them were born in HK but had their education/childhood here.
Only Eliza Sam, Linda Chung, and Bernice Liu were actually born here, Canadians by birth.
Jacqueline is actually an American by birth as well. She was born in NYC.

I think it’s quite clear TVB is concentrating more on girls from Vancouver. They pick their actresses from this pool of girls.
Totally understand why netizens are claiming the result to be rigged. Much prefer last year’s format and transparency. This year was such a joke.

2. No scores announced for the other girls 4th to 10th place).
3. Top 3 judges scores should’ve been revealed and announce any changes to the final ranking AFTER the viewers’ voting.

Get a reality check. Blame the female tvb artistes for letting #15 win miss photogenic. I’m pretty sure Gloria Tang (2012 winner of MCVP) probably chose Veronica, which helped made the difference. And don’t forget that tvb fun app is open to everyone and that means people who know her will probably vote for her, especially the contestants who know Veronica.

My favourites were 11, 12 and 3 in that order before the competition. I began to fall in love with Linna during the competition. I don’t think she deserves 1st, but definitely top 3. #12 disappointed me with her performance.
I think it would’ve been better to have the judges choose top 5 THEN have a vote for top 3 position. Then #11 would’ve won. And 7 and 9 wouldn’t have gotten placed. I like #7, but not MHK material IMO
#15 keeps saying it was the viewers who chose her as 1st place and thus, she deserves it. That’s only cause 3 and 11 didn’t make it cause top 3 were rigged. If 3, 11 and 15 were in top 3, #15 would’ve gotten 3rd place.

It is the ms hk trend that hot favourites will not get into top 3 if they are not champion. Best example are 1993, 2002, 2003, 2007 and 2010.
I know Kenix was the hot favorite in 1993 ( STILL SHOCKED she didn’t place), 2002 was the girl who lives in Arizona now, but who were the big favorites in 2003, 2007, and 2010?? Selena in 2003??
In 2007 and 2010, there really wasn’t any big favorites to win the crown, it was pretty much equal footing. I remember lily ho was a favorite in 2007 but she seriously wasn’t fit and not that “stunning.” No idea how she was labelled as the hot door.
No offense, but the girls in these pageant all look the same now. None of them stick out. The beauties back in the days were much more beautiful. It’s really not shocking anymore because these competitions are so rigged nowadays.

Haven’t watched Miss HK long long time. But I suppose winner is still chosen by panel of judges? Well their decision may not be the fans’ decision but it is fair in that sense. As for Q&A and intelligence, I mean anyone really intelligent wouldn’t be joining Miss Hk anyway. It is more like a stepping stone to a career in TVB, call it a job interview in front of millions. As for the actual A to the Q, frankly I do believe all of them are provided with answers before or at least ideally a list of probable questions and probably answers. Some may memorise well, some may panic and go blank.
In the end it is about look. Used to be the 3rd place is the TVB’s annointed new actress since she doesn’t have to waste 1 year doing something else. Now I do not know. Maybe still the same.
That being said, some may not be the prettiest but they may have certain qualities that make them likeable and approchable and TV friendly. It could be for that reason.
Every Miss chinese pageant is rehearsed before the actual day of pageant to make sure everything goes smoothly.

take this for a grain of salt but rumours had it when veronica participated in the miss vancouver back in 2012, she and her parents thought she was a sure win because of all the connections and back up she had…got 4 tables ready to celebrate….but surprisingly to them, gloria tang came out on top. Not surprise here that something fishy had happen that made veronica win.

veronica deserves this crown. miss hk is not just only about pretty face,if only pretty face count you can just look at the photo and choose your miss then. inteligence and the performance on stage is even important. there is not one that can stand out of the rest this year in terms of pretty face,but as a whole package veronica is definitely the best of the night.
This is a beauty pageant. And Miss Photogenic needs the one who looks the best in pics. It’s either Sofiee or Linna who look the prettiest in prints, not Veronica. Something is wrong here.

No denying Veronica had a good performance but in terms of beauty, she was outshined by others. She falls in the mid to lower range of most stunning Miss Hong Kongs ever elected.

For looks, it was a shocker that #11 or #3 didn’t make it or ultimately win but it’s also on the q and a. #15 answered well but the others weren’t as strong. However for me, #7 and #9 don’t have the looks or good answering skills

Perhaps tvb needs newcomers fast, so they rigged the results to have the others who were the more popular ones to be casted into series not long after the pageant ended. Usually the winner and runner ups would have to do this and that as part of their titles so cant participate with say series. Tht’s all I can think of as to why the results were so shocking. This year’s results really stunned the crap out of everyone o_O

I don’t underestimate her network or support in Vancouver, but you have to be kidding if you believe EVERYBODY in Fairchild has the HK address and ID card AND is willing to vote for her. Maybe her family but in the end, she needs votes from fellow HK viewers.
And I need to give a shout out to Gina and all the viewers reading because I disagree with Gina. Like some said here, the result was rigged in the sense the judges determined the top 3 and THEN allowed the viewers to vote. The viewers really had no “good choices” to pick and was stuck with this top 3. If they allowed a top 5, I’m sure #3 and/or #11 would’ve received a chance to win. In fact, THE RESULT WOULD’VE BEEN TOTALLY DIFFERENT.
It was said that it was an average tabulation of all the judges’ votes and whatnot.
#3 will not have won because she is not fluent in Cantonese.
As for hk address, if people have relatives in hk, they could have voted by using their relatives’ addresses.

I don’t know why you believe Im bashing Vancouver. I’m only stating my opinion and thoughts about the pageant. I think it’s quite clear that TVB favors girls from Vancouver. If you read the miss Chinese Vancouver Wikipedia page (Chinese version), you will see how biased TVB is. SO MANY former Vancouver girls get selected to compete in Miss Hong Kong. Many have gone on to win the pageant, make the top 3/8/10 and receive a contract.

It’s not that TVB is biased to Vancouver, it’s just that this year, they changed the process for overseas contestants. But you have to be willing to pay for your own ticket, have your interview there.
In a whole, Miss HK is open to anyone who is eligible and has an active HK ID. As long as you have an active HK ID and pay up, you can apply for Miss HK.

There definitely is a little bias and favoring towards Vancouver girls. If you notice, every year in Miss Chinese International, Vancouver is labeled as a hot favorite. And, many girls from MCV get selected to compete in Miss Hong Kong.
And many Vancouver girls go on to win Miss HK and Miss Chinese International. Why don’t other cities win as often??
As for changing the overseas process, like you pointed out, it’s this year only. If you look back at 2010-2013, a handful of Vancouver girls make it every year over other overseas contestants such as US cities or Toronto or Europe.
The person who has been organizes/deals with the MCVP pageant has done it for years. Probably since early 2000s. She goes through this every year and from doing that several years, she kinda knows what tvb wants and is very experienced. Most of the winners who come form vancouver from the pageants are coached by her, hence the success. Yes from Linda Chung to Cindy Zhong. Not to mention, with the help of Deborah Moore who was a former miss hong kong contestant probably gave useful tips.

I do give credit to Fairchild though because they do organize good regional pageants. Not sure how their training goes but I guess one advantage they have are resources. The contestants who licked tvb’s shoes didn’t get a chance to even be placed. Well deserved. How can a miss hong kong say that the best attraction in hong kong is tvb city/hq? I think it was something like that. My canto is bad.
I do admit Soffie did poorly there. That was a stupid move and thing she said. Very shocked she said TVB city…….. I mean I would’ve said Mongkok or TST.
Frankly speaking, I feel TVB city will be the HK best attraction if visitors are allow to visit. So I don’t think her answer is bad. I have went to HK few times and always hope can visit TVB city.

Tvb used to do tours back in the days but now they don’t. I actually went inside tvb city but they don’t let you run around and tour the place….. My friend is lucky because she got to your the place three times!! Ridiculous!
I actually quite liked Katherine. I thought she was confident without being too cocky, and she answered questions well. However to be honest I didn’t pay much attention to any of the candidates before the finality, so my judgement would only be based on the limited amount of time they showed up on stage. The judges, I believe, get to meet with the contestants and know them much better than the average viewer. I would assume that has a big impact on their scores. Maybe that’s why the results are always “shocking”.
The thing I found weird about this year’s Miss HK was that the judges said the contestants were well rounded and that it would be difficult to choose, but in the end Veronica won by such a large margin. Maybe the judges say that every year, but that’s the thing that makes the results seem fishy to me, not the fact of who won. I also thought many of the girls were quite pretty and presented well on stage.
On another note, I really liked the ballet/figure skating theme of the show. It was graceful and I think fits with the “feel” of Miss HK. When the girls came out in the sleighs I was afraid they were going to play “Let it Go” though hahaha.
I would be extremely embarrased if I were to be asked whether I think I should have won. But, I still feel unhappy that contested not 11 were not even on top 3.

I honestly thought the 1st and 2nd runner up is better looking (plz don’t kill me, it’s just my opinion). but It’s also sad how people judge on looks (including me lol) but I guess that’s the internet.

well tbh, growing up ive always had the idea that all pageants are ultimately about beauty. The outside beauty I mean- even if a contestant had the brains and intelligence of Einstein, if her looks were average in comparison to the rest in the competition, unfortunately ppl most likely would look past the brains and go with what their eyes are attracted to imo. But it’s how the game works, its a beauty pageant afterall. Ppl are bound to have disagreements with who is to be the winner and runner ups bcos beauty is so subjective. And bcos there are haters and lovers in this world lol.

Just because # 11 didn’t take the crown, doesnt mean tvb won’t give herlot of opportunities to film shows and series in the future- knowing how popular she is with the audience. Who knows, maybe#11 might become more successful than #15 in the future. You never know…..

For anyone that actually WATCHED the night of the performance instead of relying on just photos and videos pre-pageant, you’ll acknowledge that #15 had quite a well rounded performance. As such, I think she is a well deserved winner. There is a genuine quality about her that is also captivating- she doesn’t seem fake and contrived like some of the other contestants. I think that is what drew her to most people- evidenced by the fact that she also won miss friendship.
If it was just based on looks alone, I probably would have picked #11. However, I’m not surprised #11 and #12 didn’t place because they faltered badly during the Q&A and showed no signs of eloquence or intelligence. After all, the motto of MHK is about beauty and brains. #11 sounded like a bumbling idiot half the time she spoke and #12 didn’t have answers that made any sense for example the “how would you hire a flight attendant question”. #3 performed well and is also quite cute, I’m a little surprised she didn’t get top #3 maybe because of her fluency in Cantonese- I bet she was top 5 though.
#7 was the best in terms of her quick wit and articulate intelligent responses, this might be due to the fact that she’s a law student and likely has the gift of gab. Her overall performance in terms of look, and poses etc. were pretty mediocre since she seems so stiff, but I acknowledge that she performed the best in terms of her responses to the Q&A. I would have given her top 3.
#9, I wasn’t a huge fan of though I acknowledge she performed adequately- in my opinion she was just picked for political reasons.
Imo the best comment so far. I didn’t even care for Veronica before the finals but #15 had the best performance during the show and doesn’t look as bad as people claim. She looks healthy too! Hot favourite #11 is said to be a beauty but she really showed nothing special or intelligence during the finals. Besides, is she really THAT beautiful? I actually find her looks a bit bland.
As for the 1st runner-up, I could accept her in the top 3. 2nd runner-up is smart but really lacks a lot in the looks department so I can’t really live her being the top 3 yet. Personally I would have liked to have Linna #3 winning a spot too. She’s pretty, bubbly and cute too but I guess she didn’t get further than probably the top 5 because she wasn’t fluent in Canto and couldn’t express herself well during the Q&A segments (so she was only able to give simple, not qualifying answers…).

I dont understand why they even run these contests anymore. Every year its the same deal with bloody results being rigged. Its not surprising truthfully speaking, but its just damn annoying with rigged results being an annual occurence. Frankly, the girls are always below average in looks and mediocre at best with talent.

She has her own FB page which has 922 facebook users. If all 922 facebook users had voted for her and if most of her friends/classmates/family members, along with Fairchild TV employees and former MCVP contestants voted for her, she would have a higher vote count.

Out of all the contestants, Veronica had a fb fan page, which she used throughout this whole pageant. On this page alone, there are 933 “likes”. Now if you add that to the people Veronica know, her supporters from previous pageants, her employers (including Fairchild TV), and tvb artistes who came from vancouver, it would result in the most votes.
But do they ALL have a HK ID and a address? All in large, she will need a lot of support from the HK people. Like I said before, had Soffie made it, I’m sure she would’ve taken a. Lot of her votes.
At the end of the day, she faced rather weak competition in the top 3 and hence won “with a landslide victory.” Seems like the result is deserving but in reality, there really wasn’t a better girl to choose since choices were limited and the votes were given to her. Ridiculous!
I don’t have a problem with #15 Veronica – she seems friendly and approachable, giving off a warm vibe unlike some past winners such as Carat Cheung who has that icy and unapproachable look about her.
It is #7 and #9 I was shocked about…..there was never much talk about #7 and she suddenly gets second runner up, and for #9 there was so much news about her being a goldigger and that I thought tvb wouldn’t want her to come too 3

i was so shocked that veronica got miss photogenic.definitely rigged! look at her big teeth.its so distracting.linna was definitely the prettier one. i thinknof all the years of miss hk, including one with carat, this one seems to have the most controversy and reaction from the public, even judges.i know someone who knows veronica and they said her family really does have alot of money and makes “donations” and have alot of connection. hence all the tables she had for miss vancouver.

The votes were wellbalanced. Gloria tang probably voted for Veronica since Gloria came from Vancouver. Also other contestants from MCVP probably voted for her as this app was open to everyone.

The falsies of #7 & #9 is so disturbing..
I think most of the shock was cos there were no “hot favourtes” in the top 3. The audience were force to choose between the worse of the worse. It would have been better if the judges chose the top 5 and then allowed audience to vote. It would then be a fairer “you vote for your MHK” and truly represent what the audience prefer. In additionthe competition would have had more suspense and attract more viewers. As soon as they called out the top 3 I (and many thers) already knew the result. My personal preference was #3 and it would have been more interesting to add #3 and #11 into the top 5 and give the audience a real choice! (For sure #9 and #7 would be knocked out of the game!)
Interestingly enough for those interested to know, both #3 and #15 were in Miss Vancouver 2012 and Linna won the Miss Photogenic award back then while Veronica got 1st runner up. I really wanted Linna to win Miss Photogenic, her photos and smiles, on/off screen are all pretty and attractive.
Here is my theory. It was rigged, so they couldn’t put hot favourtes in the top 3 cos most likely #7 and #9 would have lost and #15 deserves top 3 but maybe not MHK Title.

It’s very simple why Linna Huynh didn’t win – she ain’t regarded as Chinese, much less from Hong Kong. After all, HK is historically a racially & more importantly, culturally homogeneous place. Ever since the fiasco with Viets attacking Chinese people & businesses in Vietnam earlier this year, you can pretty much forget about any good-will towards anything even remotely associated with vietnam.

And TVB let everyone who had a HK id to vote. So Vancouver= home of Veronica, meaning people who know her in real life from her pageants to Fairchild TV will vote for her.
You need a address to vote. Man, do you have the app and tried to vote. Try yourself, you need a damn address to vote lol!! It’s not possible for the entire Fairchild network to vote for her unless they all have a HK address to vote. Highly unlikely I suppose?
Totally understand why netizens are claiming the result to be rigged. Much prefer last year’s format and transparency. This year was such a joke.

2. No scores announced for the other girls 4th to 10th place).
3. Top 3 judges scores should’ve been revealed and announce any changes to the final ranking AFTER the viewers’ voting.
And I understand why some users say the result was rigged. Clearly allowing the judges choose the top 3 and then vote is a little loop-hole.
TVB could’ve rigged the results by simply disallowing the favorites from entering the top 3. Veronica’s main competitors were Linna and Soffie. Maybe #6 and #5 to some extent. But all were eliminated and in were the shockers – Katherine and Erin. In this way, Due to the lack of good choices, viewers voted for Veronica.
This is also a method used to rigged other contests. Even international beauty pageants like Miss Universe face similar criticism. Big favorites get eliminated earlier in the competition, leaving the underdogs or least-favored girls to end up winning.
The result from the pageants doesn’t guarantee that these winners will have a smooth sailing in their acting/hosting careers, if they choose to take that path. it depends on the preferences of the tvb execs and audiences.
Just how one of TVB people said it that just because you don’t place doesn’t mean they won’t be successful.
Eg. kayi cheung, carat cheung isn’t that promoted. The runner ups in the 2012 miss hk such as tracy chu, jacqueline wong are being promoted more.
