Ngo Ka Nin Returns to Lead New TVB Drama

While noted for his talent, Ngo Ka Nin (敖嘉年) was relegated to supporting roles for 22 years at TVB. In February, he decided to leave the station to explore different filming opportunities in China, as well as make appearances in Hong Kong movies and ViuTV variety shows. Only seven months after his departure, Ngo Ka Nin will be working with TVB again and promoted to leading star status.

The new drama is reportedly produced by Poon Ka Tak (潘嘉德), who helmed classics such as the Detective Investigation Files <刑事偵緝檔案> franchise, Triumph in the Skies <衝上雲霄>, and The Hippocratic Crush <On Call 36小時>. Retiring in 2018, Poon Ka Tak signed a one-year consultant contract with TVB and has produced critically-acclaimed local stage play Let’s Hunt for a Tiger <今晚打老虎>.

The 75-year-old producer was approached by TVB and asked to come out of retirement specifically for the new drama. When reached for comments, Poon Ka Tak said, “I only just recently received an invite to come back for TVB’s new drama. I am in the midst of familiarizing myself with it. My role and duties as a producer will take a different form than when I was previously employed at TVB.”

Starring in his first lead role, Ngo Ka Nin was surprised the news of his new drama spread so quickly. “Yes, I will be returning to TVB for a new drama next month. I am unsure who the female lead will be, but Joey Wong (better known as JW 王灝兒) will take a part in it.”  On why he is returning after such a short leave time, Ngo Ka Nin expressed, “Actually, it’s not about when or whether I am returning to TVB. I didn’t renew my contract earlier this year, but both TVB and I have a mutual understanding. As long as scheduling allows and there is a good role, I will return to film dramas any time. I’m happiest in being able to collaborate with producer Poon Ka Tak again. Since this is a leading role, I quickly made the decision to accept the offer.” The actor also mentioned he is in discussion to film a second TVB drama in in March 2021 as well.

Singer JW, who has limited acting experience and made a guest appearance in Sinister Beings <逆天奇案> last year, revealed that arrangements have not been finalized for the new drama yet. “I am waiting for the company to organize it. I always wanted to act and hope to try out new challenges.”

  1. So typical of tvb…. Not to value a GOOD ACTOR until they leave. Now I’m just waiting for Eric Li to return as a main actor as well.

  2. Looking forward to Ngo Ka Nin taking the lead role. JW is pretty, even if she can’t act she’ll be eye candy on screen

  3. I always thought Ngo Ka Nin tried a bit too hard in his acting. It made him seem too forced and aggressive? It can feel tense watching him onscreen. I don’t know if it’s because of the roles he’s played or just his range is limited which is why I feel that way with his acting, but I hope his return will change my mind.

Eric Li, on the other hand, should return for a lead role. I think he would do well.

    1. @coralie yeah between Pierre and Eric, would much prefer Eric.

Eric is so underrated, and I really miss him in ancient dramas. He’s just so good in them.

  4. Woah if they invite Poon Ka Tuk to helm this it can’t be a small sidelined drama. But jeez have y’all heard JW talk? She sounds like a cartoon character. Hope they find a better lead actress.
Also I agree someone please bring Eric Li back what a wasted talent…

  5. Pierre Ngo is back with TVB. Gotta say, I’m excited. His acting is multifaceted and he gives us something refreshing each time, such as Rosy Business drama and Ip Man movies. I hope to see him play a non villain or a hustler role this time around. Good luck, Pierre. I hope you’ll win the Best actor award in the future.

  6. 1000% agree with all the comments about Eric Li. Underrated actor.

Ka nin is not bad either but JW? Nah….
