Nicholas Tse’s Secret to Success: “Be Truthful to Yourself”

Nicholas Tse (谢霆锋) joined the entertainment industry when he was only 16 years old. He started out as a singer and was known to have quite a fiery temper then. Aside from acting, Nicholas’s passion in special effects led him to become a CEO at 23 years old. Aside from finding career success, the 32-divorced father has matured and hoped to share his insight to inspire other entrepreneurs.

Nicholas founded Post Productions Office Limited, the largest special effects post-production company in Hong Kong which provides services for the film and advertising industries. The company was involved in Andy Lau’s (劉德華) award winning movie A Simple Life <桃姐> , and has since opened branch offices in mainland China. It was reported that his firm grosses over $1 billion HKD annually, with Nicholas’s net worth valued at $600 million HKD.

In the past nine years, Nichols acknowledged that his focus was on the operations of the company. He even mortgaged his millions-dollar properties to start up the company. “I do not simply gamble; I am planning for my security net.” When he founded his business at the young age of 23, the most difficult thing was to convince clients of his ability. When he was being questioned by clients, he would ask his staff, “Can we do it? Why don’t we develop a 30-second demo to shut them up?”

Nicholas credited the creativity of the staff as the key to his success.  He feels that this is an even more important criterion than spending a lot of money in buying equipment. Nicholas further stressed that creativity cannot be substituted nor can it be bought with money; it belongs to the person forever.  When asked how to encourage creative thinking, Nicholas took a quote from Bruce Lee (李小龙) “Be truthful to yourself.” By knowing what you like to do, you will not fall into temptations easily and will wholeheartedly put in your best efforts.

From the founding of his company, there were already people who did not think Nicholas will succeed as his strength was not in special effects. Nicholas commented that to have good leadership, one has to know his own ability. He would surely fail if he were asked to do the special effects. Thus, his strategy is to find the right people and put them in the right jobs. Nicholas often encourages his staff and showers them with love and care.

“To be able to motivate and inspire others and top that with self-discipline, this is a true and good leader,” Nicholas said.

  1. i find it very hard to read Nic. His responses to interview are very cliche and sounds like a “perfect response” so I find it not candid and believable.

Regardless – I think his success is due to his hard work and humility. Glad he used his publicity and network well …

    1. I agree. The best actor series of interview sounded so rehearsed and almost always portrayed him in the most positive way. Too much spin doctoring.

There is no denying that he deserves the success from his hard work an wise business decisions.
